Building a Custom Chuck Box Camp Kitchen for a Classic VW Bus

- Lets build something! I got tired of digging my kitchen out of the bus every time I wanted to make a meal out on the trail, so I made this camp kitchen to keep everything within easy reach. I took design ques from the old camp trailers and coleman gear from the 60's and I used aluminum angle and rivets to hold it together and make it strong. I made it to fit my trusty coleman 413g stove and my go-to cooking gear as well as fuel and spices. Now that I have one done, I'm thinking abut selling a few more. Dude that’s really cool! While we were watching my 9 year old son said “Dad look he made one out of cardboard.” I said that’s what guys like us have to do before we spend money on supplies. These will sell well!
Thanks for watching!
Really clever! Totally want one!!
I'll have some ready to go soon!
Very cool and it appears it could work on other vehicles also. nice going.
"Semi Universal" lol.
Now that is awesome
Thanks!
This is cool. Got me thinking how to use this idea in my jeep.
I made one for a land cruiser and one for an old Rover. Same basic idea, hangs from the drip rail.
I have soft top unlimited
Fine job!! Congrats from Brasil!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Super cool!
Thanks!
nice idea!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
That's too cool! I watched it about 4 times. You will do good selling them!
Thanks! I hope so. Thanks for watching!
Great job!
Thanks!
Great job Jason!!! Was awesome to see it in full use & you made building it look so effortless. Very cool!
Thanks! Sometimes things come together perfectly!
Very cool
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
If you can draw it, you can build it! Great design and Execution V DUBS RULE!!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
That's awesome man, great work!!
Thanks!
Nailed it!!!!cool design cool bus cool placement! Another great video. You guys in Austin have a great V Dub community. This will be awesome to have out on your camping trips. I don't know what adjustment would have to be made for a bay version. But I defintely want/need one. Keep up the amazing idea's :)
Thanks! It should fit a bay just fine. Shoot me an email to txoldvolks@gmail.com and I'll send you the info.
Nice! Happy cooking✌️😊
Beautiful Job!
Awesome build, Jason!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
great job, nice video. Greetings from Poland
Thanks! And cześć!
Very cool!!
Thanks!
Cool design. The only thing I would look at is some kind of safety line so if it does pop off the van it will only fall so far and not hit someone travelling behind you.
The way it's attached won't allow it to pop off. The spring keeps it tight and has enough pull down to keep it tight on the gutter.
Super nice, what about one for a bay window?
Thanks! I'm working on one for bay buses!
What a good idea, given me an idea for one of my projects! Is there any reason why you could not store it inside the van whilst driving? Takes away any anxiety of cooling issues or getting knocked off! Nice job!
You could keep it inside, I just wanted something easy to access while overlanding.
This was quite a feat, bravo! The build is unique and beautiful. Looks terrific. However, I question your placement of this box. One good bump and it will fall off on the freeway.
Propane bottles stashed in outside cabinet when driving? If any car hits you there, you will be toast. Not smart. Move them inside. Fire starter and fuel right next to the propane. The entire contraption at bumper level height going down the highway. Oh My. One mistake by a motorcyclist or driver and ... KABOOM! Not to mention the hot sun hitting that the entire time you drive or park. Its an accident waiting to happen. Not sure if this is legal or not. Insurance may not cover it, if it was deemed illegal or a risky mod.
The rattle noise from this kitchen will be loud. Put some padding on insides like Noico.
DISAPPEARING, not DISSAPPEARING.
OPENED, not OPEND.
Don't be sloppy with words. Use the same precision you do for tools.
The 'music' was a huge irritant. Poor mic, human voice + music = deaf viewer. Natural sounds only and use a sock on the mic.
It usually rides on the back to lessen wind resistance. The propane bottles on most small trailers and camping rigs are stored outside, I'd rather have one go off out there than in the cabin with me! The bottles I was using (I've since switched to a 3 gal tank) have a pressure release built in so if they get too hot for some reason they vent to the atmosphere. The lids are loose enough that the gas will have plenty of exits before pressure in the box builds up. I've had this and a couple others on 2k plus mile trips, including some 4wd trail driving and nothing has shifted or fallen off yet. Obviously if it hits a strong branch or massive bump it might jump off, but the spring on the bottom and the weight of the contents keep it firmly in place. I do appreciate that you watched the whole video, and I appreciate the advice on the audio. As it's a small UA-cam Channel that doesn't make me any money I'm limited on my equipment and the gopro mic isn't known for it's studio quality sound. I've since made some upgrades and the audio quality is much better. Thanks for watching!
Though this is a very neat design. However I noticed that the air intake has been covered. I hope that will not cause any overheating while going uphill.
In my testing the engine Temps stayed within normal range. There's roughly 2" between the box and the vents. It can so be hung on the back if there's any issues.
Very cool. I’d buy one from you.where can I get your merchandise?
Send me a message at txoldvolks@gmail.com and I'll set you up.
Cool!!!
Thanks!
You are blocking the air intake on that side----- You will overheat your engine in the Texas summer for sure!
There's 2" between the box and the vent, I haven't seen any difference in Temps. If it becomes an issue I can hang it on the back, which is most likely where it'll be for the majority of highway driving.
Now the real question...... would it fit on a bug?
I could probably make one that does.
What model stove do you have?
I'm using a 413 for this because it's small enough to fit behind the cargo doors. I have a 425, and can make these to fit them as well.
