Yes, there will be nuclear weapons used. Expect another incident similar to Chernobyl but it will be no accident. It will be a precision weapon of probably 12 kilotons. The environmental impact will be equivalent to Chernobyl.
The purpose of this possibility would be to demoralize Ukraine after an unsuccessful invasion. Kiev, the cultural capitol will probably be the target.
The West/NATO will not retaliate with nuclear weapons because that is too dangerous.
This is the likely outcome that we can expect. Ukraine will resist and be successful but the nuclear weapons will very likely be used.
This is the same dynamics of a thug (Putin) being engaged in an armed altercation with a handgun. He will use it because strategically, he knows the consequences are what he can afford.

Almost everything we think of as modern has its roots deeply in the war effort surrounding WW2, synthetic rubber, plastics, radio and microwave tech, the first digital computers, helicopters, jet aircraft, nuclear energy, rockets powerful enough to reach space, and that's just a small example, literally just about every aspect of the modern world was developed or had it's development kick-started by the second world war.

Can't imagine us forgiving the Russians AFTER nukes are dropped. Instead it would be one round of bloodshed and war until humanity is I'm danger of extinction. I also believe there would be a smaller subset of people that seeks forgiveness and to rebuild humanity, but they will be drowned out.

I’m staring to get scared that this isn’t a what if scenario anymore
Man, looking at domestic conflicts: people hurting each other, spouses fighting over control and insecurity, families turning on each other or neighbors being petty with each other etc it terrifies me how people who don't even interact personally can easily dismiss the impact they have on others. I wish we could all coexist peacefully but the truth is even in small communities there are moments where a person's indiffernece is revealed and terrible things happen out of apathy or cruelty. On a grand scale the idea of leaders willing to pursue a war of mutually assured mass destruction is terrifying and sad. It's the people who suffer. Families who suffer. Citizens who suffer. A majority of humans just want to live our life peacefully before life is over. No not wants to die so tragically/brutally. War is not the way.
Sometimes even the smallest of unresolved conflicts evolve into something much bigger later on. :/

As a Norwegian I'm worried about what's gonna happen with Svalbard, with all the Russians there.
