Can rural russians feel the sanctions? Harsh reality: food, houses, relations

  • Russian people often say: Moscow is not Russia... And this is true for other big russian citites as well.
Majority of russians live in countryside - small towns, villages... And life there is so far from life in cities .
DO people in rural Russia can really feel the heaviness of ongoing sanctions? Or they simply have nothing to lose?...

Fun fact - most of our common comfort home-foods in the US date back to the Great Depression. I'm talking Baked Beans, Chipped Beef on Toast, Cornbread, Potato soup... Dense bean, rice, and cheese dishes often come from that era.

These women are very much like the past generation of women in my family. Our meals as children were not fancy. Lots of vegetables, eggs, bread, pies, homemade preserves, and a freshly killed chicken on Sundays. Everything we ate was home grown or homemade, like the pickles, preserves, pies and cakes. I remember as a child when we had weddings in the village and people that time were more poor, all people brings a basket of food and things needed for the wedding to the house of groom and bride. All people were helping to prepare the food for all the guests. Sometimes guests were more that 2000. Also I remember that the milk of the goats was given every day to one house by the neighbors and the women were helping to make the traditional Cypriot cheese called halloumi. We have also icons in the wall for Jesus, photos from family members etc. Even fish soup recipe is the same. But the life of Tamara is more difficult. Big Hugs and may God bless you !

Villages are the life and soul of Russia; Moscow is its own beast. I myself live alone in the empty western plains of Nebraska in a small village that resembles many of the small villages across Russia (wheat fields, corn, cattle and harvesting combines slowing down traffic! My life is not much different: limited budget, growing my own food when I can, helping my older neighbors with their canning, baking and even their cattle. I love it. I may be poor by the standards and live below the poverty line, but I feel blessed and I own everything I have. It s a simpler, more satisfying life. The irony is we can feed ourselves if things get bad, which is more than 90% of the country can say.

Years ago when I was at university in Wales, the government was promoting nuclear power and how it was so cheap they would be almost giving it away. They encouraged people to get rid of their coal and wood burning fires. By the time I lived there it was rare to rent a house with solid fuel and the electric heating was so expensive we could never afford to turn it on. Fortunately it doesn’t get as extremely cold in the UK as it does in Russia. It’s best to be as self sufficient as possible, as fortunes change it is the resilient who thrive. Strangely enough I was just talking to a friend about mackerel fishing before watching this as I have just bought a new fishing reel👍 you can’t beat it fresh out of the sea and eaten on the beach.

Why no gas? Economics. Why lay a gas line 10 miles through the wilderness for 5 or 10 households? It costs money to maintain that gas line too. How is that practical? Many places are like that and not just Russia. My own hometown in Montana has a problem. When I grew up there the town had about 4000 people. Now there is less than 800. The dam and power generation plant there is over 100 years old and in poor shape. The cost to do what is necessary to keep it running is staggering expensive. Far more than the town and county can afford. What is to be done? Economics people, economics.

I began to watch these Russian English-translated videos (I mean, this and other UA-cam channels) since the sad events of the Ukrainian war. It’s surprising how similar country people are everywhere, regardless of borders. It’s also obvious how well meaning and honest people from the country happens to be, especially women who have to double their strength to uphold their homes when men can’t or aren’t present.
If it were up to these people there would be no "special military operations" and only well wishes among brothers and sisters from other nations.
How soldiers from these peaceful regions learn to be so cruel and detached from other people’s human suffering is beyond me. But then I understand that they are mistreated and even virtually tortured by their own commanders, making them the monsters they never dreamed to be.
Add to that that they have to face as enemies common people who see them as the destroyers of every village, the killers of every man, women, children there, and there is little left of the country soldiers rural and more innocent previous selves. They are hated or dreaded on the invaded lands and as such, bonds are irremediably broken.
War would be the biggest monster of them all, if there was a competition.

It’s really nice they get together in a community spirit though, and the fact they are in the countryside is a blessing too. The fact that so many Russian men seem to drink so heavily that it affects the basis of their families is very depressing.
