Paul is talking about the importance for all men ( this includes women ) to not get obsessed with chasing riches. Think about this: what is the beginning, the 'root' of ALL evil? The word 'all' is the key. We are told that Satan is the originator of Evil; not any "love of money". Satan's mistake was his pride and the violence that he did to people...and not his love of money. In Ezekiel 28:11-19, we are told about Satan. The Lord says that he was the "...anointed cherub that covers..." The Lord says about Satan in verse 15: "You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, 'til iniquity was found in you... and you became filled with violence within, ( oppression of people that he had authority over, injustice, and physical violence against people ), and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God...and your heart was lifted up ( proud...pride ) because of your beauty." So...Evil originated with Satan because of his pride and his abuse ( violence) of his authority, and not because he loved money. And Paul was not talking about Satan anyway; he was warning Man to not get caught up with lusting and chasing after money & riches which can cause...all kinds of evil for man. GREAT MOVIES. MY RESPECT TO YOU AND OLD THE GOOD PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE PRESERVATION AND DIFUSION OF THESE GOOD OLD MOVIES. I PARTICULARLY LIKED THE ROCKING HORSR WINNER. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.
I have loved this movie since I first watched it almost 40 years ago . It was amongst the first movies I ever taped when I purchased my first VCR in 1983 . I wouldn't even know which genre of film one would call it ?
Such a sad ending, but how could a child die just from being obsessed with knowing the winner of a horse race? When Bassett told him that Malobar had won, he smiled and told his Mother, "I'm lucky. " Then he died. What could have caused it?
It's just a general principle of the universe: you don't usually get something-for-nothing. Why (?) Because a lot of something-for-nothing in the universe . . . would undercut the something-for-something that we expect the universe to operate on most of the time. Look at it this way: would you want a universe where you'd pay for something . . . and never get it (?) Of course not. The corollary is obvious: if the boy got something (knowledge of the future) . . . he had to pay for it (with his life). It just reaffirms how we expect things to work . . .
This movie is 100 times better than the short story we were forced to read and analyze to death in high school. Probably because of the way it was taught-find the foreshadowing and symbolism for your marks or else flunk the course and never be able to appreciate literature- a fate worse than death!
Parents have to be very careful in what they say when around children. Children are like sponge and they act on what adult do or say. This is a moral story to all adult. Love this program I have recently discovered on UA-cam.
I'm surprised to be asked to comment,my memory is that good that I can't remember watching it so I may have to watch it again, watched for the first time last night and I recall parts that I thought I thought I'd seen it before,
Spoiler alert!!! Saw this decades ago when I was quite young, made quite an impression on me. The obsessive frenzy of the boy on that rocking horse was so scary! Didn't even realize that he had won a fortune, saved the family, especially his parents who needed to grow up and be responsible adults.
Ever since I saw this on TV as a kid it's haunted me. I've seen at least 3 versions but this is the best one. I recently bought an anthology of D.H. Lawrence short stories and this is in it. I have an interest in why some child actors stay in the craft and others go off to more mundane jobs so I like to check their IMDb entries and see what their careers were/are like. John Howard Davies only appeared 6 times in front of the screen but he ended up producing some of my favourite comedy of the 70s including Fawlty Towers, The Good Life, The Goodies and Monty Python. Vale John.
Though produced when i was a child, and though I am partly descended from the British Isles, as an American I always see these British episodes as a view into a foreign culture in a far off time
I don’t know how or way this channel was recommended to me, but I’m glad it was. I’m enjoying watching as I’ve never seen or heard of this series before. New subscriber
At least the love of money didn't fall in place for the love this mother had for her children, however it took a huge win and a massive amount to wake this boy out of his sleep. Horse took the boy for a ride and won.
This wonderful episode in" content and style " of John Newlad' s"One Step Beyond" american 60" series has an importatnt difference. "One step Beyond" begins always with Mr. Newland saying that the theme of the series were strange experiences that happennred in real Life. Well, this storiy here is an adaptation of D. H. Lawrence short story. All complete ( and magnifcent) ficcion. Beatiful but out of the imagination of a great writer.
,Great story and acting. The first thing which sets this one is apart from today's movies is the lack of gunfire or explosives. The present American movies, mostly, have substituted thoughtful subject matter with gore and blood. Americans seem to worship guns and violence. Fifty years or more disagreements were mostly settled with fists. Some Schools had gun clubs, but nobody shot up the classes.
This is one story where I just wanted to slap that poor boys parents for being so selfish! That poor boy did everything he could so his mother would be happy and she spent it on trivial things! Poor kid
They were both spellbound but the mothers senses were such that money could not replace her children even when she was in trouble with the Sheriff. She hocked her own things.

I have loved this movie since I first watched it almost 40 years ago . It was amongst the first movies I ever taped when I purchased my first VCR in 1983 . I wouldn't even know which genre of film one would call it ?
"Supernatural" . . . I'd imagine.
I love this movie! Thank you so much for downloading this old favorite of mine.
Great old movie, thanks for uploading.
One of the all time greatest British films !
Didn't this lad play Oliver?I wonder what happened to him.
@@susanmccormick6022 yes he did
I think that would have been two years or so prior ?
@@susanmccormick6022 i thought so , too!
That Chrismas tree is funny!
Thankyou x fantastic and never get tired of it watched many times. X
👍❤️..A captivating and fascinating story. An absorbing story. Thank you.
I am feeling like snug as a bug in the rug right now as I am watching this! also, the lady has immaculate taste for dress!
Fabulous !
That was a good one 👏
Thankyou Brilliant film
Love these shows.. top stories and great acting.. thank you.. more please.. twilight zone also..
Sir John Mills, producer and costar of this film, was the father of Hayley Mills, an actress best known for starring in Disney films.
John was also an Oscar winner (winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1970's "Ryan's Daughter").
aww poor kid with such a big heart 🥺
Good lesson. 👍
Magnificent film. Although I didn't want Paul to die. Devastating
Great film, emotionally moving. 😢 Thank you.
Excellent. Thanks for posting
It just reaffirms how we expect things to work . . .
What a tragic way to learn a lesson.
John Mills (Hayley Mills’ father) is smashing and so natural !!!
A true icon on the silver screen !
What an incredible movie! Thanks for posting!
They sure don't make movies like this no more.
The boy was also in Little Lord Faultnery or something like that, also a classic
I' m pretty sure he was in "Oliver Twist" two years prior to this ?
Don't know what this has to do with O.S.B., but it's 1949, black & white, and John Mills...gonna make some hot cocoa, sit back, and enjoy.
This movie is 100 times better than the short story we were forced to read and analyze to death in high school. Probably because of the way it was taught-find the foreshadowing and symbolism for your marks or else flunk the course and never be able to appreciate literature- a fate worse than death!
Better than its a wonderful life story and great lesson for parents thanks for sharing 😊
I love this movie. Thank you very much for sharing it.
Parents have to be very careful in what they say when around children. Children are like sponge and they act on what adult do or say. This is a moral story to all adult. Love this program I have recently discovered on UA-cam.
There is something much scarier about black and white photography. It adds play of light and shadow that color does not have.
OH I MISS THESE MOVIES WHEN THE INSTRUMENTS IN THE BACK GROUND WOULD LET YOU KNOW SOMETHING WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN, THIS IS GOOD PICTURES.
I'm surprised to be asked to comment,my memory is that good that I can't remember watching it so I may have to watch it again, watched for the first time last night and I recall parts that I thought I thought I'd seen it before,
This is a really good episode. I am really enjoying it. Thank you.
Vale John.
Thankyou, wonderful history of John’s Creative Life.
Wondering where this went...an old fav♡☆
Great short story , great movie.
Though produced when i was a child, and though I am partly descended from the British Isles, as an American I always see these British episodes as a view into a foreign culture in a far off time
Thankyou xx
You’re welcome 😊
I don’t know how or way this channel was recommended to me, but I’m glad it was. I’m enjoying watching as I’ve never seen or heard of this series before. New subscriber
At least the love of money didn't fall in place for the love this mother had for her children, however it took a huge win and a massive amount to wake this boy out of his sleep. Horse took the boy for a ride and won.
They still had 2 children. Seems they would have put the money back for their futures as a way to honor the oldest child.
The death of a child is unbearable.⚰
Great one 👍🌟. Thanks
This was very spooky and well done.
Always loved John Mills!
Anybody know how Hayley is these days?
top notch
These older British actors were the best including Hitchcock
Excellent
This wonderful episode in" content and style " of John Newlad' s"One Step Beyond" american 60" series has an importatnt difference. "One step Beyond" begins always with Mr. Newland saying that the theme of the series were strange experiences that happennred in real Life. Well, this storiy here is an adaptation of D. H. Lawrence short story. All complete ( and magnifcent) ficcion. Beatiful but out of the imagination of a great writer.
one of my favourite films
,Great story and acting.
Poor kid
@Tracy Craft, then she wanted to burn the money he died to give her.
They were both spellbound but the mothers senses were such that money could not replace her children even when she was in trouble with the Sheriff. She hocked her own things.
She reminds me of my Melly..she's got it in her head to Own her Buffalo ranch in Montana....GOD bless her heart ❤💙💜....
