  • Back out here in the beautiful red pine forest as I tackle a maintenance issue on my Woodland Mills WC68 wood chipper. After chipping mountains of material with this chipper, I've come across an issue where the infeed roller tends to stop when it encounters odd-shaped material like a log with a thick branch sticking up. After some head-scratching I spoke with the technical support at Woodland Mills who provided me two options that would get the infeed roller back up and running well. In this video I take you step-by-step through the process of reseting the pressure relief valve on the directional control for the infeed roller as well as the bleeding of the hydraulic system controlling the infeed roller motor. Although this sounds complicated, the entire process is actually quite easy. Check it out!

Just purchased a WC68 and ran some branches through it today...sweet.
It was simple to put together and seems quite solid.
I'm sure it will be very useful to clean up when thinning my white pine plantation.
Thanks for the informative videos Sandy.

Hi Sandy- I've been watching your videos for a while now, mostly about sawmilling. I recently purchased a wc88 chipper because I viewed some of your chipper videos you sold me!...Anyway I thought I was having some issues with my roller as well and narrowed it down to the detent adjustment on the valve. My troubles were from vibration and the weight of the roller feed bar pushing down. By adjusting the detent it prevented the weight of the handle pushing the valve to neutral.

Great video. I'm going to do this to my WC88 which does the same thing as you describe, gets to be a little annoying but these are great chippers and Woodland Mills does have awesome customer service.

This is perfect thanks for helping. I just used it for the first time and it was going into neutral when the feed was set to high. Thanks again going to do this right away : )

I was a heavy equipment mechanic for several years and never bled any hydraulics. The air pushes right through and goes right out the return line. The pressure relief was the fix. Bleeding it was a waste of time, oil and rags

Thanks for watching. Any suggestions on how to fix the issue with the hydraulic infeed roller?

Yup, thanks for this I'm having the same issues with mine. A different issue is green gum leaves not getting chopped but going around getting more mushed under the wheel. I have to put on some more solid wood to somewhat clear it out.

Hi Dave, I also encounter that. I think the chipper needs the solid pieces to push the leaves into the cutting whee

Hi, thanks for the video. I understand 'resetting' the directional control valve relief valve but bleeding the motor line? This hydraulic system is not like a close system found in brake calipers where oil simply move back and forth within the same line and air can get trapped and needs to be bleed out. Here, oil is constantly being moved from tank output line to tank input line so whatever air might have been 'trapped' in the motor line will by itself be brought back to the tank. No bleeding necessary. Same reason you don't need to manually bleed your tractor loader hydraulic system. It self bleeding.

I have the same issues with mine. I did what you did. It helped but sometimes it still stops. replaced all the parts like others. I installed a pressure gauge on the line to the roller. When it stops I have over 2000 PSI on it. I sent pictures to Woodland. What they came up with is the roller is not feeding all the pieces through. Small pieces are going around the roller and jamming it at the top. I did loosen the spring tension on the roller. That helped some. Now for the odd time it does it I just reverse it and go again. Hope this helps. Larger pieces are not a issue.

Thanks for the video. Mine does the same. I've run through the same process from the support team, I've also replaced the motor and the valve, still have the issue, frustrating.

My WC46 does it too. I did the pressure relief valve but no change. The hose is on so tight I gave upon bleeding it. I'm living with it.

@@fpt264 I've replaced the speed control, motor and valve, same issue. Maybe I'll do the pump next, or try bleeding again. Last possible thing it could be is the bed plate gap, which I'll also investigate. If my last attempt does not work I'm putting it down a a design issue where wood get trapped between the feed wheel and the chipper disc, which binds the feed wheel making it go into bypass. If I could just fix this one issue I would be extremely happy with this chipper.

I have a 6' Bearcat chipper with similar roller motor. So wondering does the bleed method work on both lines? Also thinking of changing fluid and filter as I don't think it's ever been changed.
