Making a simple, completely natural boilie without colours, preservatives or flavours for 2024.

  • Here I run through how I make a basic and completely natural bait for use throughout 2024. I set out to create a bait that was fairly soft that would breakdown fairly quickly in order to let off the food signals to help draw the carp towards it. I had the idea that because carp are reared on fish pellets I would build a base mix of 2 types of fishmeal with a fairly low amount of binder, I also added no extra oil due to the high fat content of the soya flour. This mix turned out to be very stiff but manageable and actually rolled out really easily. After boiling, I air dried them for approx 17hrs, just enough for them to form a skin but still be fairly soft on the inside.

    You have inspired me to start making my own bait after a couple years of not being motivated. Living in the USA there is no where near as many options to buy good bait. Stuff from main brands that the few carp stores do sell tends to be past its best.
    Home rolled is best 😊

      Thank you for the kind words.
      I'm sure you'll enjoy making your own bait once you source the ingredients. It can be quite addictive when the captures start coming.

      Hi pal.
      Yea I got to the stage where rolling boilies was such a hassle, even doing a couple of a kilo was getting to the point where I didn't enjoy it. This is when I decided to make it a bit easier by getting the mixer, extruder etc. I then started to enjoy making boilies again.
      Steaming is the way pal 👌🏻
      Thanks for the kind feedback.

    Cracking video! Looking to make my own for 2025. Where's the best place to buy the ingredients to make my own base mix? 👍

      Hi mate.
      Try quality baits in the west Midlands he's a proper bait specialist, he sells at a fair price and is also very helpful if you need any advice.

    Thanks for the demo, i bet all that kit cost a bit, worth it though over the years😊 i fished cofton in dawlish and chap had made his own mulberry boiles and if im honest he caught more than me on shop bought ones.

      Hi John.
      The kit cost around the £1200 mark, it paid for itself after selling bait for a while. I'm reluctant to let it go as it saves me a lot of time and effort. I love making my own bait as I know exactly what goes into it, I'm also reluctant to pay upwards of £11 per kilo for a good bait, think it would be painful to be honest 😅
      Cofton is a great little venue, used to go there quite a lot when my kids were younger.

    says without colours or flavoured and you put fish meal in, does that not smell of fish, i have a bag of base and im going to try to make my own for the first time, small lots, any tips or recipes, also seen that if you cook in the micro they then float

    Just found found yiur channel....love these bait vidoes.....new to boilie making......how do you work out how much liquid egg you need per kg of mix?
    Cheers

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi mate.
      It usually works out at 1x medium egg per 100g of dry mix. 700g of dry mix with 7-8 eggs will give you around 1kg of finished boilies. Hope this helps.

      @BivvyLife thanks steve.....fed up of paying tackle shop prices for bait you have no clue what is in them and shelf life baits that rott on the bottom of the lake

      Not knowing or trusting what was in off the shelf big boilie brands was probably the main reason I researched making my own, the secondary thing was the price point of the big brands.

      Hi mate.
      I'm not really a fan of using shelf life, as such I've not researched safe preservatives. If I find a suitable ingredient to preserve the bait I'll do a video.

    Hi I love the video 😊 I’m doing my own Boilie making is it right that semolina and soya are the main binders in a base mix there’s not much videos on here how to make a good basic home Boilie i’ve been trying all different ways sometimes they’re too sticky or I’ve dried out too quick.

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  9 місяців тому +1

      I'd imagine there are a lot of bait companies using semolina and soy flour as the main binder albeit fairly discreetly as there's a stigma associated with it as they're seen as cheap filler- bulking ingredients. Used in moderation I don't see anything wrong with the practice. Like most things in life, it's all about moderation.

    Have you tried adding Salmon or crab meat to mix

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  Рік тому

      No pal I've deliberately kept this mix very basic for experimental purposes over this coming season but yes that would be a great addition to the mix although fairly expensive if any beneficial quantity is added.

    I'm new to this. I'm finding anything with soya/semolina smells the same when I break one open. Is this the case with all 'basic' 50/50 mixes? If I don't want to make a fishy bait (wife proof), what would you use to replace those ingredients?

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  8 місяців тому

      When you say basic 50-50 mixes I'm assuming you're referencing unflavoured in which case yes most will smell similar as they're farinaceous so highly starchy and mealy. If you want a basic natural bait you could replace the fishmeal with ground seed and powdered milk. Try Nectarblend or ptx from quality baits near Birmingham. Also a 50-50 could be made up of alternatives such as maize flour and clo.
      Hope this helps

    What does it work out cost wise per kg mate?

    • @BivvyLife
      @BivvyLife  11 місяців тому

      I'm not sure of the latest cost as the ingredients have increased significantly recently. The last time I priced a similar bait it was £4.25 per kilo. A rough guesstimate this latest batch would be closer to £5.50 per kilo.

      @@BivvyLife : Think you’re right ….it doesn’t catch more fish but I think it is a source of calcium and minerals which is probably beneficial to the fishes’ health so you wouldn’t notice an increase in catch rate. Also I think it possibly is an aid to digestion ( think birds…..they consume grit for digestion).
