  • John Blackthorne was given the honorary title of Hatamoto by Lord Toranaga in Shōgun, which is put on full display in episode 4 "The Eightfold Fence". Blackthorne has used his clever wit and foreign knowledge to warm up to the formidable Lord Toranaga. At the end of Shōgun episode 3, Blackthorne is named Hatamato, which has major implications for his allegiance to Lord Toranaga's master plan to become the new shogun of feudal Japan. While Toranaga travels to Edo, on business matters, he leaves Blackthorne in Yabushige's fishing village Ajiro to prepare for war.

Great video for people who were on the phone while watching the episode. From Google: To explain what is a Hatamoto. The word hatamoto literally means "origin of the flag", with the sense of 'around the flag', it is described in Japanese as 'those who guard the flag' (on the battlefield) and is often translated into English as "bannerman".

A HATAMOTO is granted the rite to bare weapons in the presence of a daimyo . They are thus highly trusted. That JB had already saved Toranaga twice at this point .

Guardian of the banner. That's the literal meaning. It's a title for high-ranking samurai under Tokugawa.
