I wrote to PA game commission after the initial sting operation. I am hopeful that thermal drones will be allowed in PA. As someone with severe red/green color blindness blood tracking is nearly impossible for me. This limits my hunting opportunities to only when I know I will be able to have a family member or friend available to help me track if needed. The ability to use a thermal drone would be a huge game changer for me.

I can see that the Louisiana case may be a little different than a plain recovery effort due to the fact they went in and killed the deer after locating with a drone instead of waiting for it to expire on it's own. They did actually continue to pursue and take the animal after it had been located.

I am from Pa also. They had public meetings about the Sarurday opener last year. Many people spoke about going back to Monday. They had polls and most wanted Monday opener. The commisioners already made up their mind before the meeting even happened to keep it as Saturday opener. They didn't even pay attention to what the people had to say. The main reason some of these states are opposing the use of Thermal Drones for deer recovery is they haven’t drafted up any legislation yet to regulate and tax a drone recovery business. When these state wildlife agencies figure out how to profit from these drone recovery businesses they’ll call it legal in the name of revenue. The state government has to get a cut on anything that becomes successful and profitable. 😡

The PA Game commission likes to make their own rules. While there are many examples of this, one that comes to mind regarding drones is printed in the game laws book given to hunters when purchasing a hunting license. It states in the handbook that one can not take off, land, operate or fly over Pa Game Lands. This is absolutely false and the game commission was told in 2016 by the PA Legislature that they needed to change their ruling before making it into law and couldn’t say “fly over”. They don’t own the airspace and therefore cannot regulate flying over, only the FAA can regulate that. But yet they still print it that way every year in their handbook to hunters.

The "industry" of hunting is what many people have a problem with. When technologhy pokes its head onto the scene people get divided. There can be fine lines..crossbow debate, cellular trail cams, now drones. Its all very debatable. I personally would rather see moe emphisis on shot placements and overlooked shot angles. So often arrows should never have been released. Really hard to pass up a shot on "buck of lifetime" but that kind of defines ethical hunting.

Thing is most states have game law or rule language that you can not use a drone for hunting and some COs and states consider using a drone to recover the game as part of the hunt not to mention pursuit at night .These are just the first states in a long line you will have turn on this and have to have regulations changed and that is time consuming and can take 1 to 2 years in most states to get done in any game commision setting . Good luck its about to get harder as this gets bigger here is why the DNRs or game commissions are not making money from this and they will not want to allow it unles sthere is a way to do so . Think that many states require a valid hunting license and or outfitting license or permit to do those things or guide hunters to game

I think this could be something that is excepted everywhere if the pilot is the only one that sees the footage while searching for a deer that's shot and is assumed to be dead and if the pilot is successful in locating the deer and it's dead the pilot and a assistant would be the only ones who would be permitted to go and recover the deer not to be accompanied by the hunter or anyone who hunts the property. I the deer is alive the only information that the pilot can relay to the hunter or anyone who is hunting the property is the deer is alive and if they believe the deer will die or live and they could suggest the hunter wait a certain amount of time before attempting to recover deer and that is it no other information could be given from the pilot. And they could even make it a no hunt property for 24 hours or something like that. I believe it would be permitted by every state with something like this implemented

That us exactly the problem! Using a drone to recover a deer is one thing and is ok....using a drone to SCOUT?? Come on man....that's NOT hunting! This is the fear by game wardens...so called "hunters" using drones to HUNT! They see that people like you want to use them to scout and the next step...morons will trying to tie shot guns and spears to their drones! They only should be used for deer recovery for the less skilled hunters who cannot drop a deer with the first shot!

I’m gonna get one use it for recovery and not charge people I personally know.and just do it at night.alone.wear regular clothes get coordinate’s and leave .come back later or send to buddy not illegal to play with your drone at night .I wouldn’t record or save anything they could use against you to prove what you were really doing.there are ways around ambiguous laws.can’t stand on side of road and launch it.those good ones operate at 400 ft nobody gonna hear shit.

Here’s the problem the Laws have to be made in black and white it’s this way or not and take the gray area or the interpretation out of the game wardens because game wardens can interpret a law one way with particular person and then the next day same warden interprets a different way for different person so one guy gets ticket and truck and weapons taken from him but the other person that did the same thing just gets a warning citation so take the gray area and interpretation completely out of wardens hands and until this happens there will always be problems

Personally I like the idea of drown deer recovery, but it appears to be full of potential pitfalls
for the operator, your assisting a hunter , does the operator need a hunting license, does an operator need a valid deer permit, does the operator need the landowners permission, are you using communication devices directing the hunter to the deer, what about property lines, are you crossing private property lines while assisting (HUNTING FOR DEER) without first getting permission, a drone pilot could easily get caught up in a poaching or trespassing, situation as you described in your video, you just cant kill a deer for another hunter legally, or be a party to it.
I'm all for drone recovery, and hope game departments come up with some reasonable regulations that will allow for drone deer recovery. Looks like a drown pilot may be running a significant chance of having a very expensive drown confiscated, and that could very well
put an end to any profitability of a good endeavor . these big bucks can come with big fines.
What about all the other big bucks your seeing while searching for the wounded deer, at night your spotlighting deer, yes lots of problems, its risky business until we get regulations on the books.
God Bless and Good Luck, Ed Hoening

I know this has been argued over and over, but, if your drone flies over someone else’s property , they have a right to shoot it down. That’s envision of privacy. All drones, even kids drones have camera on them. You can’t peek into or into someone else’s land. Get permission to do so or stop doing it. If one flew over my property, I would then own a pile of junk since it would be shot down. Respect the people or get out of business. Ask for permission. Stop doing it just because your are the bully and don’t care about others privacy rights. How about we all fly drones over your house all year long so yon never have any privacy on your own property. See how you like it. So many have lost the skill of tracking a wounded animal.

Actually you do not have a right to shoot a drone down. A drone is considered an aircraft by the FAA just as any manned airplane and it is a federal crime if you shoot it down. It is also illegal for a drone operator to hover over someone else's private property with the intent of spying on them. If that happens you need to get law enforcement or the FAA involved.

If the deer is really dead that your looking for, how would it show up on a thermal image, dead equals no heat? Pursuing a live animal , even a wounded one is still hunting , and any aircraft use is illegal for that purpose on game animals. - also flying drones over private property for the intent on filming what is below is an invasion of privacy.

A deers body gives off-heat for at least 24 hrs.and some have been found 2 days later dead.decomposition starts and that generates heatthese guys aren’t filming they are just using thermal imaging to locate the deer.you think the deer should get legal counsel for invasion. They are the only ones being spied on..your wrong about that.not illegal unless you are hovering over a house there are faa rules about what height you must fly over structures.u can’t trespass the eyes.landowners do don’t own the air space well above there homes.most times they are flying at 400 ft.

Come on let's be honest, so many drone operators get their jollies trying to see someone "naked", . Invasion of privacy, period. I rarely see a drone operator staying up at 400 feet over any structure. In most states, anything that can be defined as harassing wildlife is called hunting, and requires following all the rules and licenses a hunter has to. Artificial lights, thermal images, hunting hours, seasons, etc. Its just like putting on a drive, even the drivers are considered hunters, and must have licenses and follow all the rules, whether they have a gun or not.

I can see 100 problems with drones. The one that always stands out to me in videos is a law that gets broken nonstop by you operators. Thats a rule that applies in states like Ohio where "spotlighting" is illegal. You guys light up deer from the sky all the time weather they are dead or alive. I cant legally spotlight deer here but for some reason you guys think you can. Im surprised lots of tickets havent been written just from videos alone.

As far as spotlighting goes if you try finding your deer at night if you use a flashlight, large or small could you get called spotlighting. If you shine your light on a live deer that's not the one you shot, is that spotlighting. The drone light is used to verify and id a dead deer or not.

    • @Johnbobon
      @Johnbobon Рік тому +2

@@terrytesterman1689 Interesting points. I wonder if the law distinguishes between using a light for navigation, versus using it to actively locate animals. Either way, who among us hasn't used a flashlight to blood-trail a deer at night? Oftentimes it would be unethical to NOT search at night for risk of spoilage or loss to scavengers (ie coyotes). I don't know any other way than to use artificial light of some sort.

The Pa Game commission never seems to work in the hunters best interest. We have been fighting for Sunday hunting for over 30 years. They are resistant to change and are run by a bunch of FUDD’s. Hopefully we can get the drone issue resolved since it makes no sense the way the law is being interpreted against drone pilots. What was done to the pilot who had his drone confiscated was for no other reason then to flex muscle and intimidate; that’s how they work by making an example of him. I will try to make it to the January 26th PGC meeting and maybe I will see you there. As far as the LA drone pilot, his flying while watching the dog tracker work and when the animal was shot could be a problem since that could be interpreted as actual hunting and assisting in the kill
