I always liked that Tony looks back at Nebula when Steve escorts him away. It’s like he’s wondering if she’s gonna be okay on her own for a while, like he wasn’t the one dying of hunger. Tony’s really changed.

This entire scene was heartbreaking. Tony feeling immense guilt about losing Peter. Then asking Cap if Pepper is still around. Pepper was probably the only thing that kept him in survival mode for the weeks he drifted in space. Then you have Rocket comforting Nebula because he pretty much has nothing on Earth and lost his whole team, and Nebula having lost her sister.

Notice that it takes him all of two seconds to bury the hatchet with Cap the moment he comes calling later. The "maybe I am" line is so underrated. I used to hate the build a bear line because it felt too "quipy" in such a serious moment but it really illustrates how hurt Rocket is. He normally starts screaming or physically assaulting anyone whom he thinks is making fun of his appearance or species. This has been a constant reaction from him, throughout all the movies. But the Build A Bear line shows in this moment that Rocket is truly devastated and in no mood to argue or yell. He's just completely and utterly broken.

I always felt worse for Nebula here than I did for Tony. I get that the movie is about him and that his losses were tremendous, but when he gets home, there's an entire entourage waiting for him. His wife, several of his friends and even an old rival. All there for Tony. Who waits for Nebula on Earth? No one except Rocket, because all the others are gone. That's it. One person. And she wasn't even sure he'd be there. For all she knew, all her friends got snapped, wherever they were. I'm glad they stopped to show them supporting each other for a few seconds. It was very touching and thoughtful to include her, when the spotlight is so obviously drawn away from them in this movie.

The Guardians are probably the second best thing when it comes to friends and now Tony because of what they went through. Knowing this, it doesn't make much sense for her to have a big entourage of people waiting for her. It would only make sense if the Guardians were alive, but she knows most of them are probably dead because of what she saw in Titan.

That moment of Nebula and Rocket made me think, these two are/were probably some of the most emotionally damaged, closed off, abused characters in the entire MCU. They didn't grow up on love, they grew up tortured, physically experimented on and physically tortured, emotionally and mentally torn down, constantly compared to others, constantly having to fight tooth and nail to survive or get some type of approval out of someone else so that they didn't go through more pain, constantly wondering if they're good enough. This made them closed off, afraid to get close, afraid to let people in, afraid to be vulnerable. But here they are, finding solace in each other, mourning the ones who were the first to give them love, give them support, give them a family. Especially with Nebula being the first to reach out and offer real hand holding, something she's still new with cause she didn't have much experience with things of that nature.

You know usually with marvel movies you get a nice opening that makes you excited. But this opening was heart wrenching. From Clint losing his entire family from the snap, Tony almost dying on the ship, Tony mourning Peter, Rocket and Nebula mourning the Guardians, getting together to survey every Avenger who has died, and then Tony exploding at Steve because of the grief of Thanos winning and killing half of the universe, Tony collapsing, and then finally the Avengers using nothing but rage to go find and kill Thanos, but just when you think it’ll be okay you have Thor thinking he fulfilled his failure by going for the head, and Rocket revealing the stones are all gone, to five years later, Steve leading help groups and Natasha leading the Avengers, to Scott waking up to the snap seeing his own name engraved as being dead, and being lucky that Cassie wasn’t dead, to Natasha shocked with Clint’s rampage and admitting to Steve that the Avengers were her family. It doesn’t get lighthearted until Scott shows up with his time travel plan. Just never ending punches of grief.

    i love rocket's quip here.
normally when you call him a freak or a raccoon or something denigrating like that(like being called a stuffed animal)etc., he goes off on you.
but here, they're all so completely defeated, stark doesn't even really react to rocket speaking, there's no jump or shock, he just lowers his hands like "Well, i did not see that coming", he just doesn't have the energy to be his usual snarky self but he throws out the build-a-bear quip and gives it the old college try.
and rocket is so defeated and worn out that he doesn't have the energy to slap the taste out of Tony's mouth, and barely has the energy to keep up the whole ego complex thing, and feels like such a heel he just goes with it. after all, he was a lab experiment, he is almost literally a build-a-bear, and feels at his lowest point right now, and just agrees "maybe i am".
it's the two snarkiest and more selfcritical personalities in the room showing they just don't have it in them and are barely hanging in there, but still trying to bring some levity.
