I heard this played the first time on a small transistor radio while watching the stars on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier I was stationed on in 1969. We had just left Yankee Station combat operations for some R&R and were at anchor in Hong Kong. I had just received a letter from "the girl I left behind" telling me she was engaged at someone else. I felt so powerless and hurt thousands of miles from her and home, but still felt comfort from this song.
I was on Coral Sea in Westpac in 69 and got a similar letter. I didn't hear this song, but after finding it think it's one of the saddest songs I've ever heard.
U.S.S. Mansfield DD 728 here. Assigned plane guard periodically for a couple of you guys. Dear John letter while in Pearl Harbor 1965. Met lovely, future wife in Kobe, Japan 1966, proposed to her in Yokohama 1967, married in Tokyo 1968. Known her 50 years, married for 48 years. Fan of Pet Clark and love her songs. This song was popular when we married though not as poignant for me then. Never tire of Casablanca.
Anytime I listen to Petula Clarke, I feel better after. Thank you so much for Downtown, Subway and Kiss me Goodbye, and all others! Hearts and flowers to you forever!
I love the movies from the 30’s and 40’s. It truly was the golden age of Hollywood. Great plots, great acting, and beautiful women who understood they did not have to undress to be sexy. In fact, it makes them even more sexy and attractive.
MICHAEL LOCKLEAR: THANK YOU SO VERY, VERY, VERY MUCH for your TOTALLY AWESOME comment about Petula Clark. I am a lifelong fan of this wonderful lady and I truly believe that she is the Greatest Female Vocalist I have ever heard.....EVER!!!! So when I read your comment I had to congratulate you on having such AMAZING taste in music. I of course TOTALLY AGREE 💯 per cent that Petula Clark is THE BEST OF THE BEST Thank you my friend.
I never heard this song when it came out; I was in the Navy overseas. What a wonderful song it is. It should be worked into the theme song for a new James Bond movie. There's a nice plot line right in the song. Her other songs don't amount to a hill of beans, and will be forgotten; however, this song will pass the test of time. This is USDA Prime. Now Bogie - at first sight, he isn't much - but he was one helluv'n actor. You don't have to watch him - listen to one of his radio performances - he's so good that you can see everything in your mind. He really wasn't an actor - he became the person he played better than any actor I've ever seen. Of course he had poor movies because of weak scripts. And Petula, it's sad to think that most people only know here for "Downtown" and other commercial stuff, because this is Gold.
You obviously havent spent anytime listening to Pet Clark much. Shes a FAR better singer than Adele, not even close. Are you kidding? What about "This is my Song", Every singer from A to Z has covered Charlie Chaplans song but no one touches Pet. How about "Downtown"? Best going out on the town song ever. How about "My Love"? Your nutz
She ("Terri") would not even kiss me when she told good bye & now forever all i have are memories of her & my dreams of dread that eat at my soul throughout the days BUT especially thru the nights ! never forget our last kiss years & years past !
