Hii, thankyou alot!! I have a question, so i have a lot of powders and those powders are to paint porcelain. But can i use that also as a underglaze? I cant find anything about it
Maybe a bit late to the party, but a quick warning for putting underglaze on the foot of your piece: it can still stick to the kiln shelf. It really depends on the underglaze you're using, as some include silica which does melt.

Hi! I am making these personalized jewelry dishes and I had put initials on the dish using underglaze and have just bisque fired it. However I realized that I got one of the initials wrong. Now that it’s been bisque fired, is there a way to erase the incorrect initial? Can I sand it off? Please let me know!
Hi Kaitlyn!!! You should definitely sand it off but make sure you sand it wet - the dust is extremely bad for your lungs - just wet and dry sand paper should work. Go for a higher grit if you can then you can just re paint! :) goodluck!

Hi Laura! That is an overglaze - gold lustre - which you do a third firing for at cone 019 :)

Yes this is what I do once i have finished painting on underglaze, cover with clear and then glaze fire. :)
This is amazing , and helpful but I have a question , can I only use underglaze to paint on my mugs or I also have to use overglaze after ? If yes can I over glaze right after I underglaze the mug or should I fire it first ?
Hi! Yes you can not glaze it and it will stay on but won't be shiny! (I would only do this on the outside of objects, I have another under glaze pencil video that shows some of this) and yes you can over glaze straight away!
Can you use underglaze with paint on glazes?
Hi Karina, yes you can depending on the glaze - of the glaze is opaque you won't be able to see it though! :)
Does the underglaze and glaze both have to be under same temperature template like both have to be mid fire or high fire
Hi! They need to be same temp - this is because your under glaze will have a burnout temp which will effect your colour - I have a video about underglaze pencil which explains this :)
Great explanation, thanks so much! I'd like to ask just one more question, do you brush on the clear glaze right after the underglaze has dried or do you dip the piece in the clear glaze? I always assumed I could use underglaze before the first firing and then apply the clear glaze to the bisqued piece before the second, but you seem to do it all before the 2nd firing?🙈
Hi! You can do either 😊 I choose to do it after bisque because the piece is a bit easier to handle and I also have the option of sanding as well if I want to. Also the underglaze pencil doesn't work as well on greenware that I use in my other videos and I use that a fair bit!

Hi Emily! The yellow I use in this vid is from Design colours I believe. I have found the Amaco velvet underglaze are really nice - if you look at my website you can see a few pieces that have the amaco yellow in case you want to see what they look like fired. :)
Great video! Thanks! Have you looked at mother of pearl lustre? I think that's my next thing to look at. You're kiln looks new, I assume it's a fancy electronic one! I'm using an old one with a mini cone in a sitter - it's really kiln god territory, I've done some dumb stuff and thought I'd stuffed things up a few times! - In Bris here
Hi Ryan! I have used gold lustre and it turned out amazing! Pearl i think would be nice and subtle. I hope you have the gods on your side! The first kiln i used myself was my dads small kiln and it was for a lustre firing - manual with just a knob and temperature gauge that i dont think worked. Everything got over fired it was so sad! I hope you have better luck!
So I did a pinch pot and it is now dry. Can I use underglaze now then bisque it? After bisque Can I use the clear glaze then second fire?
Hi Queen Yen! That is the correct order so yes! You can alsp paint underglaze onto bisque and then apply a layer of clear (once the ubderglaze has dried) and then glaze fire. Depends on which way you prefer!

can you underglaze if you single fire your pieces?
Hi Maya! Yes! You should be able to :)
is it okay to brush on clear glaze afterwards or do you need to fire the underglazed pieces first? I wanted to use Chrysanthos's underglaze on stoneware pieces but the underglaze only fire up to cone 6 (1222 Celsius) while Northcote stoneware's glaze temp is at 1280 😅

I haven't had a go at northcote at that temp before but just to a test. And no you don't need to fire your under glaze pencil on, I have another video on underglaze pencil you might want to check out :) I would just make sure that you have lots of glaze on your brush when you put it on the under glaze pencil or dab it on so it doesn't smear everywhere :) 2nd coat you can paint on as normal!

I think I was confused if I could use cone 6 underglaze on stoneware pieces, because it seems like stoneware from Northcote needs to be fired higher than cone 6.
@@phoebewu9346 Hi Phoebe! I think you will just need to have a go - my kiln I fire at cone 8 with the nps clear and my kiln says it is 1249 (but it does run hot). Imtests can be so annoying because they are time consuming 🤣 but often they are worth it! Good luck I hope it goes okay!

I don’t think i ever fire a piece in one go. So i can’t really give you any updates on that.
I remember the first time bringing my ceramics to the kiln and the people at northcote pottery gave me a pretty clear explanation on how to fire a piece 😄 So now I would either paint underglaze on my leather-hard greenware then bring them to bisque fire. Or fire my bone dry greenwares into bisques, apply underglaze and glossy clear glaze on top.
I usually bisque fire them first and then decorate. Although i was told that if you colour your greenware, bisque fire it, the colours would come out more vibrant. I hope I’m making sense! 😂
And apologies if my answer wasn’t clear. I don’t think i remember exactly what me problem was back then. I can’t believe i’ve been making pottery for over a year now 😮 If not for your message I wouldn’t have known, so thank you ❤️🌷

Hi Yam, yes they can be whatever brand but you just need to check the temp on the bottle! I mix brands all the time! But they are all the same firing range :)

paint what you want to paint then put the clear glaze its the last thing you do

Hi Mouza! Just 1-2 layers of clear! But also you can Check your clear glaze label and it should say how many coats. It will only be 1 coat if you dip glaze !

Hi Charmayne, thats actually a overglaze called gold lustre. Its an additional firing at cone 019. :)

Hi! Yes! It can be - this is why the name is "under"glaze 😊 it's a nice alternative to having to buy lots of different glaze colours too - can just have clear with lots of different underglaze colours!

Hi Tarn! That's okay! I'll just clarify - it would need to be a translucent glaze for you to be able to see it. Any opaque glaze will still be functional and everything but of course you wound see it. In saying that you might have it only on part of it as part of the design. I only every use clear on top 😊

if i were to underglaze without bisque firing my pieces first, would i have to underglaze, fire, apply clear glaze, and then fire again, or can i apply underglaze on, wait for it to dry an, apply clear glaze, and only fire it in the kiln once?
Hi Lao Gan Ma, the second option you said is just fine and exactly what I do 90% of the time :) under glaze, let dry and then apply glaze! Good luck
It's really not a good idea to put underglaze on any part of your pot that will be in contact with your kiln shelf. Underglaze is not just coloured clay. Slip with added pigments is safe on the foot of pieces but underglaze is a kind of slip / glaze hybrid and therefore may well stick to your kiln shelf.
Did you bisque the cups before underglaze? Can you bisque with underglaze on and then do a transparent glaze fire after? :)
