      I went on a cruise six months ago, and decided to spend 4 nights in pr after the cruise, I loved the island, and I am thinking about moving there, I worked in IT for a few years doing help desk and desk side support, I know jobs there aren't the highest paying jobs, my question is, would you rather buy a place or rent ? What kind of jobs can you get ( I know it's highly competitive in the tourism industry)?

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  5 років тому +3

      @@hicham.o732 Look for remote IT jobs, or IT support position with one of the big pharmaceutical companies. They will pay much higher wages than most jobs on the island. I decided to rent for the first year, and that was 3 years ago, we are still renting. Puerto Rico is a wonderful island, but the job situation is not good.

    Jen, my parents arrived to Puerto Rico, from Cuba, in 1960. They loved this Island so much that their second and third children were born here. I am the third child and I am 57 years old. They had to work very hard to give us the best education. Unfortunately they passed away...my Dad in 2014 and my Mom in 2015. They told us to please never take them to live in Miami even if they were old, because they felt their heart’s home was this beautiful Island a Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. I was raised here, I got my BBA degree here. I worked for Advertising Agencies in PRico, NYC, Texas and Miami...and I returned in 2015. I don’t have any family here as all have moved to Florida...and I feel that I pertain to this land. I am very happy that your experience has been a good one. Regards.

    Thank you for such good opinion of our Island. I am very proud of living here and my heritage. From being born in N.Y. With working parents who returned after making funds for the goal of buying a property. This was the classic american dream. Work, study and grow professionally to capitalize back in the Island. Love my people. We are such a mix of cultures which makes us so rich in knowledge and hospitality. For the mosquitoes use many essential oils including citronella in water and just sprinkle everywhere as you would fertilizer. Rich aroma of lavender and many other you can spray in and out the house. You’l see the difference. Just discovered I could do the same to get out of my surrounding all the street cats and the neighbors’ ones visiting my chihuahua but instead ... using straight vinegar. Worked fine and it is natural, not toxic for them. Hope you continue enjoying living here. Make the most of each day. Hope for good health also with the virus issue.

    Just saw your channel and I want to say thank you for the nice things you said about PR. I am from the island and came to TX when I was about 18 to “get some money to help my parents”, and well 10+ years later that hasn’t happened, it’s definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. I’ve been wanting to go back for some time now but the job situation is what’s holding me back. I am now sure I want to move back, but I guess I have to wait a little to make sure I do things right. Looking forward to more videos.

    My wife and I are tentatively planning to move to Puerto Rico in a few years, after she retires (I've been retired for 7 years). We've spent considerable time on the main island, mostly outside of San Juan, and on the isletas of Vieques and Culebra. We're bilingual (English/Spanish) and have spent significant time in places like Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panamá. We lived and worked in México for over eleven years. What do you think about the eastern part of the main island of PR, around Humacao, Naguabo, and Ceiba as possible places for us to relocate?

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  5 років тому +2

      Clearly, I am biased - I love the east coast. I live in Humacao (Palmas del Mar in within Humacao municipality). Naguabo and Ceiba have some gorgeous areas, and considerably less expensive than Palmas! I think you find something that you adore on the east coast, so go for it!!! Move here and join us in paradise!

    Thanks a lot for the video, and glad you like the island! ♥️ Mosquitoes love fresh flesh! When I visit the island and go to a river with my family, my legs and arms end up full of mosquito bites, I mean big, red welts, while my family have none. They just attack the ones they feel is new for them. Eventually they will realize that you live on the island and will leave you alone.

  • @mzitro1

    Mosquitos are a pain in the arse. Someone suggested to me that Listerin repels mosquitoes better than anything else in the market. Just rub listerin on any expose skin, and they won’t come near you because they hate the taste. I tried it, and it worked. Problem is, that I have to re apply after a while when the listerin smell/flavor wears off.

    Jen, OMG! I swear you and I have just about the same story up to a certain point!! I fell in love with PR after spending just one day there as a stop on a cruise in 2019. I’m coming back for my 50th birthday this May (2021) to take another good look at the island. Spending just 4 days, but I’m so excited! I want to do the exact same thing you guys did - just sell everything I own, pack some bags, and move there. I live in Houston, TX but I have always been a Caribbean girl at heart. I need sunshine, beautiful water and good people around me. I’m trying so hard how to make this happen. The most major thing that’s holding me back is work. I know that most expats are either retired or own their own business. Neither of those applies to me, but I refuse to let that keep me from the island. I MUST find a job! I WILL find a job! Yes, I know (to all the people who will comment letting me know that it’s next to impossible) that it is not going to be easy. Unemployment is high. Employers prefer to hire locals first. I’m not bilingual (yet), but I am working on it every day. All of these things are stacked against me, I know. But, why should only retirees and business owners be the only expats who can make it there?!? I am absolutely determined and I will make this happen! Thank you so much for these helpful videos!!

    I'm not gullible and naive and buy into this. Mark my words, in less than 50 or 60 years from now Puerto Rico will become another Hawaii or Alaska. Before Hawaii and Alaska became states the native people were the majority and their culture & language was felt everywhere (all over the Hawaiian islands and Alaska) unfortunately the've been absorbed by the union. Look at them now, they are extremely Anglicized/Americanized and their self identity is almost not existant. I love Puerto Rico and I honestly fear that PR will experience the same thing. I'm not trying to bring contention here, I just desire for our Puerto Rican future generations know what it means to be a Spanish citizen from Puerto Rico. When Puerto Rico was a Spanish province [1493-1898] it never lost a single aspect of it's identity.

    Hello, It is good that you can live on the island that I was born in, but the The system forced me to move to Texas, because as you mentioned the lack of employment and opportunities for locals is minimal, so with my Master's degree and years of experience I left.The Government created insentives and opportunities for people like you, and I am glad, but it does not help the local, the small and medium businesses do not have any benefits and professionals like me have I have to leave the country. Fortunately I can travel every Christmas to PR, except the last ones due to Covid19. So I'm happy and that you continue to prosper on my island. Thank you for so nice words about Puerto Rico

    Hi Jen! My mother is from Vega Baja....almost all of her family still lives there. I’ve been there a few times, but never really got to enjoy it because my family is so protective and....maybe a bit controlling😄 they wanted to always take us everywhere (we’ve literally been around the entire island as well as vieques) and it was always such a rushed vacation. However, last time we were there (this time last year) we really got to enjoy it for ourselves so much....and we have a dream to move there. (Never thought I’d say that!) but the town had me heart broken as it’s so run down. There is so much potential there and I fully believe Vega Baja should be a place on the map for tourist to see. The beach is one of my favorites. I see so much potential in businesses to start there, for tourism. Have you ever been there and what do you think of it? Or, would you consider checking it out?

      Jen, thanks a ton for your amazing testimony about Puerto Rico. Regarding Vega Baja you guys should check out the Cerro Gordo area near Dorado. If you’re coming from that town on the road PR 693, go past the Dorado Beach Ritz Carlton (and Ricky Martin’s home). Soon after that (after the old Cerromar Hotel) make a right (gas station) towards Cerro Gordo Beach. Here you’ll find many walk-up apartments. My cousins own one close to Cerro Gordo Beach. It is so lovely and private. Apartments in this area are a bit cheaper than the ones, next-door in Dorado. By the way, you have to visit downtown Dorado. It’s very nice and clean, with restaurants and pubs, 24-hour drugstores and supermarkets and a fun hang-loose, beach-town vibe.
