The resolution of this video is pretty brutal.
TheStig ZeroZeroZero as is proper black metal
the narration too :-)
Kvlt quality
What the fuck is Cradle of Filth doing in a Black Metal documentry? Shouldn't they be at a Hot Topic somewhere signing 13 year old's shirts?
PRHILL9696 cradle of filth isn't black metal, only there first album is
Chelsea Volkina Maybe they are not completely black metal, but they are still fucking awesome!
At one time Cradle of Filth was black metal. And a damn good band.
+Chelsea Volkina I agree with you,Cradle of Filth is a joke.
PRHILL9696 Just because somethings loved and wealthy doesn't mean its good. I can rip your statement to pieces on a lot of things that are "good and wealthy" and still be bad,not just music related.
I enjoyed this. Thanks for the upload.
Not even a mention of Limbonic Art... Such an underrated band. Moon in the Scorpio is brilliant. It would be nice to see them included in these BM "documentaries."
Thank you for uploading.
No mention of BATHORY hello under the sign of the black mark was the archetype for black metal
awesome, thanx a lot !!
How can you even go about making a documentary about the history of black metal and not talk about Bathory... That's almost like making a documentary about the history of calculus and not mention Newton...
Starscream I agree
Starscream I was thinking the same thing. They truly influenced BM. Did she call them death metal?
Hunter Campbell I think she only said that they played Death Metal, which they did initially. The unique twists they added to it is what influenced Black Metal, until later on when they decided to go Viking. Bathory never actually referred to themselves as Black Metal, the fans did, and those fans formed the iconic Norwegian bands.
Wow thanks for the info I never knew. Haha kind've reminds me of Darkthrone with their first album
In the nightside eclipse is the true definition of black metal. Incorporating keyboards and synths in just the right way to make it so atmospheric it's almost a sensory overload. Early Emperor is the greatest form of black metal that has been made.
Much better than most of the boring documentary's done on Black Metal
i got in to black metal via a kerrang magazine black metal special report i was 14 and all the murder arson and ultra harsh music had me hooked and i still buy black metal music every month
+Robert Munro I got into it when i got my hands on a vinyl from the band Nargaroth in 91? 92? i was 13-14 at the time. I still love the "primitive" oldschool underground style Black metal and i´m still buying Albums from Indie Labels every month too. ;) It´s like an addiction that i have to collect them all ^^
+Robert Munro Actually, the bands that are mention on that report called bullshit on that article, they blew the whole thing out of proportion and exaggerate a lot of facts to make them look like a bunch of baby killer satanists.
Jack Tejada what the fact that some artists were jailed for murder and church burning very exaggerated
very nice !! :))
what's the song in the background at 0:20:15 ??
FINALLY found some more mention of Extinction somewhere on the internet. Shame I didn't really learn much more about them, they're just briefly mentioned. If anyone knows anything more about Vuel's discography beyond what's available on yt that'd be great. :)
Do a keyword search for "Extinction."
Into the Infinity of Thoughts by Emperor :)
0:16 - Let's find out.
Norwegian Black Metal is definitely the most European kind of music that you can ever listen to. Considering the fact that metal in general comes from rock and roll which originates from blues which is actually non-European music. But if you like to listen to something that originates from your own soil, besides classical music like Mozart or Bach, you better listen to Norwegian Black Metal.
i think someone needs to tell you 5 years later that you talk a lot of dmbfck shit! and your comment is retarded as fck too thats it🤙
chill dude , its just music . I listen to black metal , but also classical , jazz , rap , rock , blues , country whatever , if it has good instrumental and spirit is worthy listening
long live the shadow.
lol@ "Geezer Butler could be regarded as the godfather of black metal..." MORE LIKE THE GODFATHER OF FUCKING ALL METAL EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The last song is fucking amazing !
Tristessa, the creative force behind Astarte, died in 2014, I believe. Of cancer.R.I.P.
Black metal is true Music of Nature.
At least they had Tsjuder-- one my favorites--my opinion. They deserve exposure. I guess I'm not into that "low-fi" sound. I really like Tidfall and Myrkskog even though Myrkskog is considered more death metal. I really like that HEAVY blackened sound.
i agree with this
Cradle of Filth used to be black metal. If you listen to the albums "The principle of evil made flesh", "Dusk and her embrace" and "Cruelty and the beast" you will find out that they were black metal at that time but after those albums they started adding too much gothic influences to their music and became an extreme metal band. Some people also call them gothic black metal.
Black metal is a pragmatic term. I think the Black part of it is about the imagery and lyrical content than where they come from. The fans can be too elitist in BM. Then complain when it never changes.....
More symphonic rather than gothic
Did anyone see that most of the interviews are bands from the UK? They don't really interview anyone outside of the UK. There is a couple but I think they're in the UK at the time on tour tho
Behemoth is the best thing black metal has going for it today. Over and above that listening to a bunch of grown men bitch about which genre of metal they should be identified with is ridiculous. Just be metal. The concept is simple.
Finally someone has mentioned Akercocke!
Satan's accountants
So Varg is the one that messed it up because he's the one that talked to the media about the church burnings and exposed black metal. I bet alot of black metal musicians are upset with varg.
+Chris Kimmel Nope. You're wrong, in some way.
+Chris Kimmel I think he's actually an idol in the community, he talk the talk and walk the walk, the rest were just copycat crimes. I mean, the dude is still in jail. Much respect.
+Jack Tejada You're also wrong, in some way.
Varg killed black metal. He exposed it to mainstream which was intended to be underground. He killed the real creator of the trve black metal- Euronymous which controlled black metal. Then he went to jail for 15 years. Same for Faust from Emperor.. There was no control left, everyone have done anything they wanted with the Euronymous new guitar playing technique...
Well, we should not forget to look from other perspectives, and remain open minded, you're right, but, still more research is needed until you will find the bottom of "that" story.
Black widow is the real OGs
Bathory was an version of black and death metal mix that fell into the thrash scene

Antestor, Crimson Moonlight, Slechtvalk, Sanctifica, A Hill To Die Upon, Drottnar.
A great and informative video,.........................................but not enough on King Diamond.
Morbid from Stockholm Sweden
Damn!!!
gorgoroth 🤘
The story of how Black Metal turned from it's roots into commercial shit...If you want to know about Black Metal you should watch One Man's Metal and Until The Light Takes Us.
Who the hell made this documentary?!? And what happend to research?!?
Hey! Where are the Finnish bm-bands like Satanic Warmaster,Horna or Goatmoon etc.?
I guess i should have known it was going to be in 240p.
R.I.P Maria Kolokouri
I was hoping to see Jan-Erik and Halvor from Tsjuder in part of the interview.
Coven, Black Widow, and Black Sabbath!! This documentary got it right with those three, first three dark rock bands in history.
COVEN , Jinx Dawson es la Reina !!!
144p?
Some say Blue Cheer was the first metal bamd. They did a great version of Summertime Blues.
I would say MC5 were more metal than Blue Cheer.
as a genre of Music, black metal is defined. it has standardized characteristics. vocal style, instrumentation, song structure, etc. as such, there can be christian black metal bands. i wouldn't say they aren't "true" black metal. rather they aren't pure, or traditional black metal.
Good ol' demon burger
Asbjorn Slettemark; the self-proclaimed music "Expert", biggest poser in Norway
What was the song in the beginning?
tsjuder- unholy paragon
If you want to hear true American black metal music listen to Leviathan "scar sighted" album!!
U won't regret it.
Much prefer tentacles of horror and tenth sub levels of suicide
Leviathan is what truly got me hooked on black metal
🤘🏻🌃🤘🏻
black and black metall
Half shaved head Mantas and bald Vorph (Samael) look similar for some reason.
i can only take so much of that "come, come, come to the sabbath, come to the sabbath, satans there" bullshit. that gets sooo annoying
at around 6:00
You have right,Black Sabbath do not have nothing whit BLACK METAL,its just rockblues music.Pathetic coment black sabbath is god of black metal, bullshit of people who thing like that !!!!!!! For me are God Mayhem,Emperor,Dark funeral .... Black Metal !
Gotta love the yazz floot....
@@dragandragon2911 thays not black Sabbath its Black Widow from the Black Mass album.
So what are the qualifications for a BM band ??
To quote CM Burns
EEEEEEVIL
The sound and feeling. When you hear the saturicon vocal say that, then you know that the definition of black metal does not really have a recipe.
What is the opening song?
Black sabbath by black sabbath, the best band ever
It's silent now.
the presentation kills this documentary. Otherwise its awesome
25:14 Tsjuder song name pls?
Goatwhore i think off the northern darkness tour dvd
Black widow couldn't be any fucking further from black metal.
We all know that Black Sabbath made metal and spawned it's possible characteristical genres of which Black Metal was invented by Venom, yet not played by them.. They invented the name and lyrical content and partly the attire.
It was Bathory that takes the ultimate slice of fully owning the creation of Black Metal.
I never said they were...
Yes, they made metal, I never said they were BLACK Metal..
Oh deer..
+PRHILL9696 Please get over yourself. Sabbath were the first, and thus every metal band since owes them respect. Did they invent black metal? No, others have created and perfected their own styles of metal and been pioneers in their own right, look at hammerfall or iron maiden of course for power metal, or death, morbid angel and autopsy for pioneering death metal, candlemass and witchfinder general and solitude aeturnus for doom, hell tool took metal and made it into their own signiture sound. Look at punk even, it was considered outsider music and generally speaking in order to be considered punk it needed that low-fi simplified sound. Then bad religion released suffer, which is regarded as the first ever melodic punk album.
+PRHILL9696 You keep thinking that brother. Just curious, which band do you believe best exemplifies black metal? To me that true sound that makes you feel as if you are on a frozen mountain peak, in the dead of night, with the glow of the pale moon...etc....etc...would be Emperors early full album releases, In the nightside eclipse and Anthems to the welkins at dusk, (Nightside being the pinnacle of all black metal albums in my opinion) And Arcturus' Aspera heims symfonia.
the devil digs doom.
20:30 towards the pantheon? or is it just my imagination?
No. Into the Infinity of Thoughts
Black metal has the coolest lyrics
I agree. It kind of has tinge of favoritism too.
It represents black lipstick black hair and eyeliner
Varg should've been mentioned firstly when talking about the church fires. He started it and then sort of challenged euronymous to do the same. But I think this documentary was meant for impact and not necessarily dependent on "who-did-what".
Varg did it to promote his band since no one seemed to like his project. Varg was also the guy who would wear Venom's shirt without liking the band, so his satanic image was totally influenced by Euronymous who actually created and headed the scene.
Lmao when he says this is the album you must have..can't see the album xD
Tristessa is as good a screamer as anyone I've heard.
Ladies and gentlemen from the very depths of Hell... Newcastle.
Some bits are nice some bits are shit. Today it's shit cause it's pissing down with rain
doom metal heavy like lead .....dopethrone rocksit
I think venom and black sabbath had nothing to do with what later became black metal, the real black metal originated in sweden and norway
I'm sorry but you're an idiot if you think that. Venom gave the genre it's name, it's lyrical concept, it's stage appearance, it's vocals (altho not as harsh as later bands) Even Bathory's first album shares name of songs and lyrics with venom's black metal album. Even hellhammer/celtic frost who are from Switzerland said they were inspired by venom. You are basically saying, the two biggest influences on Nor/swe black metal [bathory, celtic frost] who both were influenced by venom have nothing to owe to venom..lol
mccabedylan
Well I bet they also listened to things like classical music or the beatles or whatever, that doenst mean the beatles gave birth to black metal
yea son, you are wrong.
richard salvator i'm wrong ok..It's easy to tell that bathory's first album is a clear copy of venom's black metal. They share lyrics and names of songs. Even the lead singer of Enslaved said it's stupid to not call venom black metal. But I guess you know more than him...
mccabedylan First off, show some tact. I hope you're not in grade 3.
Second, sure it started with them, but the idea simply originated. Mantas specifically said they were more storytellers than spreading a message. Norwegian black metal obviously took inspiration but they really took it to the level of being about message rather than music.
Venom was specifically about music and about personal meaning. Norwegian black metal is really what made the genre notorious for being about ideals, messages, etc. Venom wanted to be original in the way that most artists do, but Norwegian black metal took that to a pathological standpoint. Venom definitely should be credited for originality but I think they have little to do with the goings-on of Burzum, Mayhem, etc. Venom didn't have members murdering each other and taking pictures of their friends' suicides for album covers.
It's sort of like Black Sabbath being an original metal band. Of course they were, but it's difficult to compare them to modern metal.
This is a great documentary on black metal. Thanks for posting it. \m/
Check out 'Cosmic Tide' by SONIQ ARMADA if you get a chance...
Wurdulak rules!!! Great black metal band!
When she said that Emperor weren't virtuosos, the inner Ihsahn fanboy in me raged so hard.. lol
Vikram Shankar Music then she clarified.. at least not when they first started
As Fenriz in Darkthrone said referring to Dimmu Borgir and Satyricon: They can make the cake but we will continuing making the bread :)
Bathory should've been mentioned more.
Only 2pac and Biggie ?? What about Eazy-e , Big L , Strech etc
And ODB
All the butthurt over cradle is beyond hilarious. I'm over here thinking thank satan there are extreme metal bands that actually sound pleasing. Not a musical mess. Keep on Dani. Us people that like art and actual effort on musicians quality are still here ♡ Open minds ftw
Iam not the type of guy who says "todays black metal is bull shit" i like some of todays black metal bands, but i agree with the fact that late 90s and mid 2000s black metal was the best
6:10 it’s ironic when he says he’s certainly not a Christian, and says they can be quite evil, but if he really believed that then wouldn’t he want to be a Christian since he adores all things evil?
I'm VERY DISAPPOINTED to see so many bands involved in tearing down the 'RULES' in music & how its portrayed & listened to only to REPLACE those rules in their very next breath!!! 'Christian black-metal CANNOT EXIST'??? Maybe these black-metal bands have gained enough success that turned them into what they ALWAYS wanted to avoid...they're ROCKSTARS!!! Now they are doing what pompous ROCKSTARS do....pointing fingers & pissing on those they feel are beneath them!!! SAAAAAD!!!!!
cradle of filth extreme metal i say
Highly surprised Alice Cooper didn't get a mention in this documentary, he wrote songs about dead bodies in the soil at the same time Black Sabbath started. His song ''Black JuJu'' should serve as a true starting point of dark music with it's haitian conga rattling intro erupting into a thrashed metal fiasco! Funny thing is that Alice Cooper is a Christian.
Also surprised Slayer and Deicide never got mentioned either, Deicide are death metal but the singer Glen Benton sites himself as a devil worshipper even going so far as to burn an upside down cross into his forehead.
Good documentary but bad visual quality.
Not dark enough he was just alluding to the occult
heavy dialects here
This is like watching a podcast. The video quality is fucking horrendous.
What do cof have for eyes i bet they Don t know about boys from Brazil
if you want to listen to true black metal listen to Cultes Des Ghoules from Poland. good shit
It had a purpose... now its just about fame, money and being like other bands... prove me wrong!!!
IMMORTAL are the heavy KISS. VENOM logo backwards is MONEY. IOMMI is great but BS is not BM
Bathory ?
They don't need to; the smell is bad enough as it is.
This documentary is crap. Everyone go see Until the light takes us, True Norweigan black metal, Vice Fringes One man black metal.....those are good.
neuroleptika o
agreed
Yea its all on until the light takes us.the doco narrator on this one is well worth watching
Black metal definition should only come from those wnho make black metal.
17:54 "Punk Metal"? No one says that. It's called "Crossover Thrash", or just thrash or crossover, and it's super gay. Also fuck UK Sabbat - should have featured Japanese Sabbat.
I wonder why the fuck they jumped from Sabbat to the Norwegians... And I also wonder why they just mentioned Bathory once, and just as for mistake...
right, that's like a group made of federal agents saying "ya, we're some rough NYC streetpunk band". Facepalm fodder at its finest, my friend
Why do the people commenting here use 'gay' as an insult? How old are you?
***** iconic lol
***** I'm anything _but_ politically correct. I was actually curious about it.
***** You're assuming that I took it as offensive, when in fact I just thought it was stupid and childish. It's the kind of thing I'd expect from a kid. You're just as free to say it as I am to think it's stupid.
***** sheesh you two sound like long lost siblings..
***** Heh, "throwing around insults". That's funny, judging by your previous comments.
BATHORY
There is some damn good christian black metal. Ideology doesn't matter to me, music is music.
Black Metal is true music of Nature.🖤🖤🖤🖤🌿 Venom is not black metal, but just heavy metal.
So which Music is heavier Death Metal or Black Metal? Yeh Black Sabbath was never Black Metal they were heavy Metal. Not the new wave of British heavy Metal. but plain Heavy Metal.
I would think Venom was the first Black Metal band then came Bathory wouldn't celtic Frost fall under Thrash?
Venom is thrash too
Death is heavier no doubt but black metal is more extreme in content and message
The interviews in this film are quite good, but the narrative and inaccurate facts stated are 'glossy' at best. 4/10
christian Black metal??
Antithetical to everything Black Metal stands for
White metal maybe?
