    I used to meet my grandparents at Underwoods where they would eat rolls, cobbler, and drink coffee. After my grandmother died, I would stop and pick up rolls and cobbler for my grandpa. Now when we go, it's because of the nostalgia of Underwoods.

    If you didn't go to Smitty's BBQ you missed it. Best BBQ in Central Texas. I haven't lived in Brownwood for over 20 years and I still get cravings.

    As a previous employee of underwood’s the place is nasty, black mold in the fridge, raw meat stored next to cooked, sewage backing up into the drink station, and white walls stained black in the kitchen. Leo yells at all of his employees for any minor mistake and Paul plays off as a good boss but if you have an injury you’ll be told not to mope around. They play off the nostalgia and I have no idea how they pass a health department check.

    This was a great episode. My grandmother lived in Brownwood/Early through my childhood until she died in 2020. So many beautiful memories of this city, its buildings, and its people. I live in Arlington, and had no idea there used to be an Underwoods BBQ where Bodacious sits now right by the ballpark on Division St! I love how life comes around full circle and I learn things about my own city and childhood from shows like this!

    Ok Chet, why did you not go down Thrill Hill? I lived in Brownwood about 35 years ago and loved but dreaded going down Thrill Hill. Maybe it's not there anymore? I haven't been back since I left. If it is still there, you gotta get some reel going down it. Thanks for going to Brownwood, it's really grown. Blessings on your travels. Thanks for showing us Texas!

    Wow, we want to move to Texas so bad! We recently saw a place for sale by the lake we'd love to live in... came to check out what Chet amd the crew had to say about Brownwood... i can definitely see this would be a great town for my husband and I! The challenge is theres so many great towns, things to do, good property, etc... how does one choose! Dear Lord, show us the town You want us to move to, to contribute to, and be a part of a great community, amen!❤❤

    There was an Underwoods near where I grew up that we went to when I was a kid. It made my day when I saw the Underwoods when driving through Brownwood and my wife and I stopped in for lunch. It was exactly as I remembered from my childhood.

    My grandfather was an aerial photographer after flying in the air force. He and my grandmother were staying at the stone little houses at the state park aerial photographing Brownwood Texas when I was born in Midland in Sept. of 1955. My first travel trip was to the state park for my grandparents to meet me (I am told) as a one month old baby. I am now living on the lake, retired, 60 years after visiting.

    I have been to Brownwood training at Camp Bowie and two of my favorite places to eat at were Steves' Market & Deli which at the time was only open three days a week. The Turtle was the other one I would eat at while I was there. If you go back there you should check them out.

    Underwoods is not BBQ, not a stick of wood used. Also, they removed or changed everything that had saturated fat, so it tastes like a nursing home cafetiere. Even the rolls have changed.

    Stayed in that strange town back in 1997…..the original downtown was essentially abandoned with a definite wrong side of the tracks feel! Ate at Underwood’s which contrary to the video, is pretty basic unless they’ve changed a lot which apparently they haven’t since then!……check out the old abandoned downtown…..very weird place!

    • @judirana1883
      @judirana1883 Місяць тому

      @@anthonyhartnell4199 You must mean restaurants, and shops? There's never been residential options in downtown Brownwood. It's revived and looks nice and clean. It has it's own little charm and business. It'll never be a huge bustling downtown... but then many downtowns are suffering, including in cities, like Denver. The pandemic has changed the landscape of downtowns. For the most part, I'd say there are some fun places to visit downtown... and a few the Day Tripper didn't have time to share.

    • @anthonyhartnell4199
      @anthonyhartnell4199 Місяць тому

      @ interesting that this phenomenon seems to only exist in the US. Canadian cities are all mostly back to normal and there certainly aren’t half abandoned towns like Brownwood and dozens of others in West Central Texas…..very strange to see that 30 years ago and apparently it’s still happening despite the small changes you referred to.

      Every town has its issues. Granbury is advertised as a pristine tourist town but underneath they have always had a meth problem and for a long time were in the top 10 most produced labs in the State. Every town has their issues. There are a lot of great people in Brownwood and the town is going through a great revitalization. There is a strong community support system there. You should look into Breckenridge since you moved there.

    Is Brownwood hurting so badly for money from residents and tourists that it has become necessary to expose this wonderful little town to a world of people who could change everything you love about it into something that becomes impossible to deal with?
