At this point, it is AT LAST also on iTunes (presently $9.99). I am beyond thrilled to find any recordings of the special, as I have been doing Internet searches for at least nine years. Our family bought its first VCR back in 1979 and this special was one of my earliest, and most beloved recordings. Saw it oh-so-many times but no idea what become of the cassette. On the bright side, our mutual search for it let me rediscover Greg Benson of MediocreFilms -- now ALSO on UA-cam. Hurrah! :)
Since I was in my early 20s, I have remembered some variety show type show where people were dressed up as merchandise and singing a song that went “commercials, commercials.” At least 6 times a year it went through my head and I would sometimes search for it, coming up empty. 3 days ago I thought about it again. Then, out of nowhere tonight I saw this come up while doing something else entirely. I knew this had to be it when I saw the thumbnail alone. I was so glad to see your comment that you had also been searching along with some others here. It’s insane that you found this 9 years ago!
I remember seeing all of his specials when they originally aired. So nice to have them all on DVD The only 2 I could recall from this one(before seeing it again after 30something years)were Okra Cola and the parody of the Mean Joe Green cola ad.
I so need to own this dvd.. or a Pirated version would be nice if that's out of the question.. No worries.. I'll pay Martin the 2 dollars the 5 dollar bin at Walmart charges...
Does anybody recall Steve Martin's clip of him singing "I Can See Clearly Now" while he trips down some stairs and crashes into a low hanging chandelier? I would love to find that clip!
Yes, I do! I recall that bit was in his taped, live concert in 1979 at the old open air Universal City Amphitheater, with an unannounced first act of The Blues Brothers, which I attended. I recall a VHS version of his concert was released. I believe portions of that concert were edited with pre-taped introductory segments for another NBC Special: “Homage to Steve”
@MikieLAX I'm so happy to finally find someone who knows what I'm talking about. It was a hilarious thing to watch on TV, so I'm thrilled to hear you were able to be there in person!
Yet you felt compelled not only to watch the entire 9-minute clip despite having watched it and already judged it unfunny, but to stick around afterward and crap on it. Somebody's reeeeeally bored.
Missing is the great ensenble bit: “Okra Cola - the Cola with the Green Smile!”
A young Paul Reubens.

It's on the Shout Factory's Roku channel.
''SHOUT FACTORY '' will be releasing this on DVD IN SEPT 2012 in a Package called STEVE MARTIN THE 'TELEVISION STUFF
I remember seeing this twice when it was on TV 30-odd years ago. Is the entire show available somewhere? I don't think it's on any DVD collection...
I was looking for the Okra Coca-Cola ad, too. There’s another UA-cam clip that professes to show it, but all it is, is the audio.
It is on Amazon instant video
@dittoheadAZ I have no idea how to get the full show. Happy hunting man.

9 minutes. YOU SADIST!!!
Every bit as unfunny as it was in the early 80's when it originally aired.
Right? I mean, it positively worries me that some people would actually laugh at this garbage.
