Re the sketch, I have translated on a few occasions at international conferences, and it is the most nervewracking and exhausting experience imaginable, so hats off to all "serious" translators, yet I'm smiling at the sketch because there is always the temptation to mimick people's accents.
In a world of such sadness it’s so refreshing to see you take this video with a pinch of salt. I'm surprised this sketch hasn't been cancelled already. I nearly die laughing every time I watch it. It's not actually about racial or national stereotyping, it's about exaggerating the characteristics of different languages as a reflection of their culture. I think it is simple and brilliant.

there are British accents that reflect various waves of historical settlement/invasion-my accent(Yorkshire)can be linked or compared to German,northeast/geordie to Swedish/Danish,and Scottish to Norweigian;there's probably other examples too
If you are a Scouser you can pick up the German language very quickly. i.e. Dis, Dat, Does and De udders. ( P.S. I was born in Liverpool ....before someone has a go at me )

It was so nice to see you guys taking the sketches as they were intended - humour, although this has been twisted and turned into such a negative . You should watch Goodness gracious me , especially the going out for an english and the brief encounter sketches they are absolutely priceless and such a joy to to laugh with. I fear humour has become so politicised and I recently went a glee club of up and coming comics and it was pretty dire and embarrassing to see so many people dying (metaphorically) on stage . The left and political correctness have deplatformed and sanitised so much that anything risky is no longer attempted. Great video guys and great family ❤️

I swear to god the actors playing the other countries must have been pissing themselves while filming. Even the guy that reps for Africa is rocking a smile at the end, and I am guessing he cracked up and laughed after she finished.

SO FUNNY I had not seen that one..There is a chip shop near me run buy a chinese family and the mum always say "SAW FINGER" to English people who she knows are new to the shop..It's funny watching their faces as they try to make out what she is saying without being or sounding rude or dumb..Some get it fast but others just stand there with a gormless look on their faces, until she lets them of the hook by holding up the salt pot and saying "SAAAW FINNNGER" slowly...salt/vinegar
Glad that you realised that this was comedic. I found your take on Tate's "Nan" to be offensive. The thing that made me a lot of laughs was your wife's asking if Swedish was even a language!! We get our Swedish inflection from the "Cookie Monster" by Jim Henson. I speak four modern languages & took ten years of Latin. This was mainly the interpreter's stereotypes of other cultures.
FYI - ‘Wha gwaan’ is Jamaican patois for ‘What’s going on’ or ‘What’s happening’ etc. Also ‘batty bwoy’ is an offensive Jamaican patois term for a gay man. It has nothing to do with Ghana. ‘Whaa gwaan’ is a slang that has now become almost mainstream in London and other parts of the UK.
If this had been made in the 70s it would have been condemned, then as well as now. It seems that it was tolerated when it was first broadcast because Tate comes from that broadly 'alternative' oeuvre of comedy. Interestingly, with today's announcement that Little Britain will no longer be available on the BBC's archive service, I wonder if there will now be some 'revisionism' of shows like this.

In Southwark Council, they had a Black Officers Room and other separate activities even though Black Officers, by then, were in the majority. In 1994 in another Inner London Council I was interviewed with others for the temporary position I held to become permanent and got the job so I continued my work. ONE WEEK LATER I was told " Black people were under-represented in Education" and a new Black candidate appeared and got the job and, as there was only the one position, I was out altogether and then decided, fortuitously , to start the first of my own 2 Medium-Sized Businesses as I realized ny then that to be White, Middle Aged and Male ticked no boxes at all.
Wonder how long before Catherine Tate is called out about this,has to apologize profusely and remove the video-though what might save it is that it is actually titled "offensive",of course.
Apparently this sketch toke 16 takes to complete because they could not stop laughing especially the Chinese lady who was jumping up and down with laughter 🇬🇧
Her humour is great and not malicious because she always plays the butt of the joke. Even in this, her character is the joke. Her arrogance and ignorance that she believes she can do anything she wants through sheer will and without any real skill or effort is what drives the joke. Her Nan character also says horribly offensive things but again, Nan is the butt of the joke and the personality being highlighted negatively.
The character she's playing here is always saying she can do things that she hasn't got a clue about, in a doomed attempt to impress and so as not to lose face. There's sometimes a slow build with such character based comedy, which is why looking at one isolated sketch can appear more jarring, or less funny, than it actually is. :)
The humour is not about mocking the various countries and their languages,it is entirely about the ridiculousness of the "translator" and her deluded ideals. The joke is on her.

Fun fact: In Sweden he is known as the Norwegian Chef and most Swede's are surprised to find out that he is called the Swedish Chef everywhere else.
