Thanks for the video! It's really helpful. I'm still in my first semester of undergrad so PhD is still rather distant in the future but you can never be more prepared.

Thank you? Could you perhaps make a video where you give further insight in your specific PhD thesis?

Hey! Thanks for this video. I'm from Florida, and I just graduated with my MA in English. I'm currently in the process of writing my statement of purpose and preparing my writing sample. I'll be starting (hopefully) my PhD in fall 2021, so your videos on this are going to be helpful. I look forward to watching the rest of them! 😄

As a current English Lit Major at the University of Central Florida I have discussed pursuing an PhD with one of my professors. I hope I can endeavor to make it that far in my academic ventures and do thank you for your informative video. If you could make a video specifying the process you went through (as well as writing a dissertation) it will be most insightful. :)

Hi, this unrelated but can you do a video on what you think of Dostoyevsky?

I'd love to but besides Anna Karanenina, Gogol and Bulgakov (which arguably doesn't count) I'm completely ignorant of Russian literature!

Don’t do a PhD unless you genuinely love your field. Love (not just like). Be borderline obsessed. Because there can be some real shit in grad school. You need to be self-motivated.
I absolutely agree that you need to find a prof to help you in your application process. I am forever grateful to the professor who helped me prepare my portfolio. He told me what universities to consider and critiqued my writing sample. Super famous professors are experts in their field. They may teach at prestigious institutions. Apply to prestigious programs (do it!) BUT don’t necessarily choose the super famous professor as your advisor. Too many tenured profs at high-ranking programs are not good advisors. I am American, so the US system is different than the Italian or UK system. Our programs are usually fully funded for 5 years. But fully funded doesn’t mean you shouldn’t seek outside fellowships. It is truly an independent enterprise.

I'm a high-school dropout, my thinking is more along the lines of my next meal.
    Ciao from America.

This video was quite enlightning. I've been thinking of getting a P.hD and i'm already freaking out. I have never approached my professors mainly because they are distant and some are even arrogant....so..i don't know what to do. 😭

In my own experience, most professors tend to be quite interested in students who like their same areas (in the case of Literature, their same authors/currents/periods/national literatures). Some may prefer to keep a certain distance in the relationship, but it doesn't necessarily mean they don't like you/don't think you're valuable. Good luck!

Yeah, a PhD in music performance! Reading is for scrubs 😤😤
Edit: there isn't really a point in getting a PhD in music unless you want to teach or maybe conduct.
