I've been studying at the University of Birmingham for about 3 months now so thought it was a perfect time to do an expectations vs reality video.
My name's Lucy and I'm a humanities student focusing on queer romance novels of 21st century, so obviously this won't be the same as science people. Also everything I say is my own opinion! I'm SO thrilled to hear you talk about your friendships and community! I'm a first year PhD student so this year was a quite different way to start, but I am floored by the depth of friendships I've been able to already make in my department-and I do feel quite lucky to be in a department that is perhaps unusually collegial and tight-knit. But I do, like you, really push back against this idea that a PhD is inherently an isolating experience-I think so much personal and intellectual fulfillment comes out of the relationships we make, and in more normal times the spontaneous conversations and daily interactions we have. I'm not sure how I would survive the next five years without a community of people here to sustain me!!

I've been offered a PhD in environmental science at Birmingham Uni and these expectations vs. realities are so helpful! As an international student, I really really hope freshers week will still happen this year, in some form at least! Looking forward to watching more on you channel :)
Congratulations on the PhD offer! I'm glad this video was helpful :) I know everything is up in the air right now but the university are hoping to continue as normal in September and are also planning a lot of events for an online freshers if it isn't possible to in person :)

Networking is so important, and definitely a skill I'm still developing :)
@@LucyHargrave Would you please elaborate on the importance of networking for someone who likes to stay in academia like yourself? Is it important from a professional point of view or merely social? I've always imagined networking being crucial for people in the corporate world. Is it also the case for academics? And is it so obvious that an introvert is asking all these questions?!!! :)))
