I was so disappointed in 2000 that Finland didn't chose Nightwish. I still think this song is so good and far, far superior to the borefest they did end-up sending.
@@tuijakarttunen9164 Ah, skipped the beginning. I always remember better the other lady who worked in the 80' with NW: Marianna Pellinen (backing vocals and sometimes the keyboards). EDIT: in the end of 90', sorry...
The truth is that the guy who was the head of the jury board had told the jury members that Nightwish cannot win at any cost. This is what I heard on a radio show were they talked about Eurovision, and the guy who told this knew this for a fact. People, including me, voted for Nightwish to win. In the end you saw the jury members given only 1 or 2 points to Nightwish. So....this is how Eurovision goes...!
I think this was the first time I heard of Nightwish. I remember watching this from a 14 inch tv at our cottage and Tarja's voice gave me goose bumps. I was so sure they would win. I voted (for the first and last time) and I haven't watched Eurovision after that. If you pay to vote and still the votes don't matter, it's just a scam.
This is the Eurovision version, so has that typical techno Europop beat thing, but they also did a version of it that was 'heavier' and that came out on an album called "Bless The Child - Rarities". Both versions are great, I can't pick a favourite version.
oooooh i love this song!! haven't listened in years because i forgot how much i like it. thank you and who suggested it (i didn't grasp the name), for reminding me ❤
Sleepwalker used to be one of my favorite songs. But you're right, there's still a lot to discover in Nightwish. I remember how Tarja said in the interview that when she found out that they would be in the competition, she was working in the theater and cried because she didn't want to be a singer of just one song. In the end, though, she acknowledged that it was a good thing for the band.
@@plantsntrance5513 I think she wanted to avoid being known as just the singer of "the one" song. There are a lot of artists associated with just one song or movie that overshadows all the other work (songs, movies) they do
So this is actually not in the Eurovision. This the contest where they tried to get into Eurovision.... so they never really were in the Eurovision. Today, this contest in Finland, where you try to get into Eurovision, is called the UMK. The jury didn’t want to pick them because they are a metal band. But all that changed when Lordi won the Eurovison..... in a way changed but the jury still doesn’t like metal bands in the Eurovision. Thanks for the reaction!
The whole Eurovision thing was so funny and one of the best things that has happened in Finland. Big fat middle fingers to the corrupt minions of the pop music industry. All those arrogant pop gurus and how they got embarrassed in front of the whole country 😂 From their book: ------------------- "Those judges were totally embarrassed after the results were disclosed", Tarja laughs. "After all, people take the contest so seriously - if you don't win, you'll be choking with tears and refrain from any commentary. It was unbelievable to witness the whole circus, being as we were there just to have fun and check out the Finnish cream of the crop." The whole Eurovision episode was soon forgotten as just a curious incident in the band's career. "None of us expected to be making our big breakthrough with the contest or anything like that", Tuomas says. "We were pretty much just fucking with the conservative Finnish music scene. I trusted that people would understand that, and if the public vote is anything to go by, they sure did. I take my hat off to them for that. They understood we were in there with honest intentions, but we weren't taking ourselves so damn seriously. I mean, the Eurovision Song Contest is probably the most boring, conservative and corrupt institution in the world of music. We wanted to make a little statement and totally succeeded in doing so." ----------------------------- Tuomas is truly a man of the people.
ALL hale the REAL TRUE QUEEN 👑 of NIGHTWISH and of ALL FEMALE SYMPHONIC METAL SINGERS!!!, the very beautiful looking and very unique voice of the enchanting TARJA!!! 😀👍👍🤘
You got to check out the song that we sent to the contest that year; Nina Åström - A Little Bit I'm pretty sure no one has heard of Nina Åström ever since. Or before, in fact.
This is not actually Eurovision, it is the Finnish "*national* Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) *tryout*", as Nightwish Arena wrote. Some countries hold a pre-Eurovision tryout contest like this to choose the song to represent their country that year. So this was only in Finland, competing against other Finnish groups. Nina Åström ended up representing Finland, not Nightwish. Finland got 18th place in 2000 (out of 24), Denmark won. So Eurovision Song Contest is the main thing, national Eurovision tryouts happen before it (if they do - and it might have different names in different countries). And they could not have picked any Nightwish song they wanted to perform - one, the rules say it must be a new song, and two, there is a time limit, and basically every other Nightwish song is too long :D So this was written for the occasion. And it is a ballad because metal is not popular in Eurovision. Lordi, who became the exception to that, came later. "All competing songs must have a duration of three minutes or less. This rule applies only to the version performed during the live shows. In order to be considered eligible, competing songs in a given year's contest must not have been released commercially before the first day of September of the previous year." etc.
Yes! They should have won! I remember watching them! They were brilliant but in this competition the voting is based a lot of times in the relations among the countries....
The Finnish jury was wrong, they voted for someone else, who of course had no chance of winning the Eurovision contest, so Eurovisionists constantly consider Finland to be a completely musically untalented country, especially the Swedes. There are many videos on UA-cam where Swedes sneer at Finnish music.

Tuomas tried to write a song that would appeal to the masses and the result was just another song. If he had written a "Disney" song, he might have been successful. That would have been more typical for Nightwish and he would have succeeded better. Fun fact: It is one of the few performances where Empuu has his white guitar.
Ehhh, no 🤣 They won the public vote overwhelmingly. No matter what they did, it wouldn't have changed how the corrupt pop music jury would have done. They were insanely prejudiced before the first note and clearly thought they were from better genre of music themselves. The whole thing was a complete joke and that's what made their embarrassment so memorable. They were completely dumbfounded by how superior Nightwish was in the public vote. It was a huge win for Nightwish and it kinda changed Finland away from these pop guru guys to more open and more public deciding things. Lordi 2006 victory would not have happened without this episode.
@@ValtteL The juries are a source of controversy in every country. A band like Lordi was possible because it didn't matter who you sent if you weren't successful. Some jury members probably agreed to that to prove that with bands like Lordi you're guaranteed to come last. "Unfortunately" they won the ESC, as the only Finnish band to date. That still leads to discussions to this day.
@@Mischnikvideos You are guessing and you are guessing wrong. Lordi made it to the Eurovision Song Contest because in 2006 the qualifiers were two-part and in both the phone voting decided everything. It was the public who chose Lordi, no one else.

Stupid jury....I heard that their opinion was that this kind of a song does not fit into Eurovision song contents. Wrong style. The whole Eurovision has lost the point...it is a massive show but so little to do with good music.
