Thank you soooooooo much for doing this video. I ran into a problem while trying to change out the rear shocks on the pre facelift model. This video game me some clarity. You're awsome for this buddy!!
Hey R50 owners, I have just spent most of the day playing with a forklift and my 96 (pre facelift) R50. I am running NRC9449 springs and was trying to decide which shocks to purchase. I have come to the conclusion on a pre facelift the Bilsten 33-185552 is the best length shock for 9449s. Any longer than this you will need to retain the coils somehow (The ProComps come close but spring can 100% drop out). The other thing I found on a straight axle drop (so both sides even down to max shock extension) the 33-185552s length is slightly longer than the point the pitman arm stops down travel on the right side. You will need to extend swaybar links and brake line and diff breather with these shorter Bilstens. You shouldn't need to extend bumpstops with 9449s as the coils will bind before the shock bottoms out. Hopefully this helps someone out. Unfortunately I have never played with a facelift model so can't help here but looking at numbers I'd guess the ProComps would be a good place to start 🤔 Must of watched this video 50 times working this out, thanks Tyler
The math is way complicated for what most people are trying to accomplish, it’s a mess haha. Glad you got your stuff figured out. I’ve heard speculation that you should avoid relying on the coil binding as a bumpstop but I’ll leave that up to further research. You said pitman arm, but I think you mean panhard bar. Good stuff!
@@208Tyler When I installed them my buddy suggested putting them in upside down. Awful idea. Harshest ride ever. It was like having a 2x4 bolted back there. Flipped em back over and much better. They are a little stiff though since they are a reboundless type. Meaning they don't extend back out on their own. So the dampening is stiffer but smooth.
Great video but I do have a question. I plan on installing the nrc9449 but do I need to install the 33-185569 bilstein or can I put the 33-185552 bilstein because I was planning on pairing them with the 33-185552 because I’m trying to avoid the extending of my break lines. Thanks in advance!
Hi, I have an 04 model with 2" spacer lift, rear shocks bushes need changing, so I'm just gonna change the shocks altogether. Should I buy an OE replacement with the same travel or something longer with more travel & if so will that require any modification?
@208tyler I recent just had OME springs installed, both heavy duty in the front and heavy duty in the rear. Problem I’m having is how rough the rear seems to ride. It’s so stiff and very uncomfortable, feels like the truck just jumps in the air going over even a mild bump. I still have OEM rear shocks however and the mechanic said after installing springs that shocks are topped out pretty bad. Is the issue I’m having with how stiff the rear is because of the shocks or perhaps I got springs that were way to stiff and tough.
so which rear shocks should i get for my 1996 r50 XE, 5 spd manual 4x4? it has a 2" lift in the back. and also, where should i hit chassis lube points with my grease gun? thanks a bunch
Okay quick question for you because it has been driving me crazy trying to analyze what may be the cause here. Recently just bought a 2001 R50 about a month ago. Previous owner installed NRC 9446's on the rear on 31" tires, and ironically i installed 2" spacers on OEM front coils to try to balance it out (the 9446s put the rear quite high in comparison to the front). The problem I'm having is a loud thump in the rear whenever there are bumps/speed bumps. Almost sounds like something shakes/jumps in the rear, which now im thinking might be the metal to metal contact (they have the 2 metal capsules, not the rubber boot). The shocks in the rear are similar to OEM dimensions (travel, extended, collapse etc) but now i'm thinking it'd be best to throw in some of the pro comp/bilstein shocks to increase length. Thoughts? btw thank you for these videos!!
Hey, I have a 98 Pathfinder and I want to upgrade to the LR 9449 coils. Will I have any issues using my KYB 343388 Shocks with the LR coils? I dont need more down travel from stock but I am just looking to lift the rear 2.5-3 inches with a high spring rate to be able to handle alot of weight in the rear. Any help is appreciated thanks!
Using stock shocks with Land Rover coils is a mixed bag. You won’t have as much downtravel available, so you’re more likely to max out the shocks, which might make some noise and feels funny. But, you certainly can go ahead and try it, no harm in that. It may suit your needs just fine
Hey Tyler I know you don’t have one of these anymore but I had a quick question in regards to the Pro Comp shocks. They are ~2” longer then the 52 bilsteins but ~2” shorter then the other part number bilstein. Would you say these would need extended brake lines or breather hose? Thanks
The pro comps are only really 1.1" longer than '52s and a about 2.7" shorter than the '69s. Especially if you have a post-facelift R50 with the updated shock mounts, I would assume that you don't need the extended brake line or breather hose. Both are cheap parts if you do end up needing them.
@@208Tyler awesome thanks. That’ll be something I look more into when I throw the setup on. Gonna go with 9449s and pro comp shocks. Will just lifting the car up on jackstands and letting the axle droop tell me if my lines are long enough, or will the axle go lower then that when it’s flexing on one side?
@@mattiamangione7667 Letting the axle droop once the shocks are on should tell you. There shouldn't be an appreciable difference between letting the axle drop opposed to flexing one side at a time IMO.
So I haven't been able to find an answer. Does the rubber bushings in the shock absorber NEED a metal sleeve in them when installed. Driving a 99/pre face-lift and bought bilstein 185552. Not sure if I need to buy new bushings so I can fit anything correctly or what have you. Just trying to get everything ready so it can be a bolt on job
I use my bilsteins each with one bushing not having a sleeve. On the other mount I had to use a larger bolt. You will have a gap on your lower mount that requires a different bushing, bigger sleeve, or larger bolt
You bet. The shock fitment thing is honestly the dumbest part about lifting these. It’s easier on the facelifts, swapping a bigger bolt on was a breeze. I think most people go for a custom sleeve or different bushing on the pre-facelift.
Funny that you mention that- 4x4parts.com sells a Rancho for the 2 inch lift, but they mask the part number. I would assume it’s similar to bilstein 33-185552. I looked through a Rancho catalogue. It was easy enough to read, but I didn’t find any bolt on part numbers and left it at that. If you found one of their catalogue’s, I’m sure you’d be able to find some kind of 16mm-16mm mount shock
@Tyler Smith I purchased Rancho shocks for the rear of my R50 after installing LR 😁9447 springs and am very satisfied with the price as well as ride quality. Model Number RS55112
Posted this question on the pathfinder forum but havent gotten any response. I'm considering AC front springs to match with the extended ome struts, nrc9449 rear springs. I haven't decided on rear shocks. Would like to run ome to match the struts and want to avoid making mods to make other shocks fit. Concerning the ome n104 shocks, the online pics don't show a bushing fitting for the top mount. How does that work? Been awhile since I'm been under the hood but I remember the R50 to have bushing fittings for top and bottom mounts, am I missing something? Any idea if ome n180 shocks would fit? Thoughts on my spring configuration.
It's a stock image. The actual shock has bushings top and bottom. Spring configuration is fine, rear shocks might be a little short depending on how you use and drive the vehicle.
@@208Tyler even the ome’s might be a little short? I would really like to stay away from having to extend break lines or other modifications when installing shocks. These are the last things I haven’t ordered 🥴

Well, the most negative side affects of spacers (in the front) occurs off road where the CV axles reach extreme angles that are greater than what the stock geometry would cause.
