- A sword of fire and an axe of cold
Vision of the Sibyl has foretold
Armies gather on the battle-plain
All will fall and earth will die in flame
Here on the battle-plain
We will die in flame
In falcon's feathers soaring overhead
Choosing warriors among the dead
Twilight written in the runes of crones
Freya weeps upon her golden throne
Upon her golden throne
We wait for her alone
Call us unto you hall
Take us into your thrall
The battle rages, but they fight in vain
When all is done it must begin again.
"How many amazing riffs do you want in this song?"
"Yes"
Listening to music as a guitar player, you hear many great riffs over time and tend to think to yourself "damn I wish I wrote that one"; and this is one of 'em.
Lol no doubt, its a badass song to learn but u gatta be right badass to MAKE savage song decades ago
But like... which riff? XD
yeah so true im like that with almost any epic song i find im like arghh why didnt i think of this xD
The opening riffage and the second piece made me think the exact same. Sooooooo fucking heavy!!!

That opening riff is pretty sick
Love the way how the song comes back to that riff at the end, perfectly fitting with the lyrics. Pretty awesome song, I must say.
Drop C, matey ....arrrrrr.
Agreed!
It's the sickest...

When I was 15 there was no possible way that anyone could convince me that this wasn't the heaviest song ever written.
15 year old you isn't wrong
Ear Dethklok
Chech out I, the Witchfinder by Electric Wizard
Check out anything by Discharge
Love it 😁
These guys make me want to ride into battle on horseback with a god-damned battleaxe
Get the fuck back in the basement Kyle!
Fuck yea brother !
I was just thinking the same thing.
My wife and I are naming our daughter Freya, to be very fittingly born in the springtime. I will not be showing her this song, but if she's anything like her dad, she'll have no trouble finding it herself. :)
Freya was born 2 months premature at our home in the middle of the night, while her mother was home alone. By the time the ambulance had arrived, her mother was having a stroke and bleeding to death, and Freya's body temperature had dipped so low it wouldn't register on the thermometer. Both of them got as close to death as one could possibly get.
--but I'm happy to inform you all, they both made a miraculous recovery. Not only did Freya's mother make a full recovery with no adverse effects from the strokes, Freya has since completely caught up on her weight and development milestones and is showing no ill physical or mental effects from her traumatic birth. She is a smiling laughing and nearly walking, beautiful baby girl. I am blessed to share my life with two incredibly strong women and Freya has already proven herself worthy of her namesake. 🥰
@@OrinPhelps Jesus man that’s insane, you could’ve easily lost a wife and a child. Do not take that luck for granted lol like for real 😂
❤️
Wow man I'm glad everybody is OK. My oldest daughter is named Freyja she was born on my birthday.
Are you my daddy?
This song randomly came on my playlist after not hearing it in 15 years. That simple but heavy breakdown brought a tear to my eye.
This has got to be one of the tastiest riff of all time.
sad to see that they broke up. fantastic band. this song is an absolute banger
Damn this comment is what broke the news to me. Glad it was just a “hey we’re satisfied and gonna retire” with no bad blood
I just bought Skyrim today. You'd better believe I'm dual-wielding a sword of fire and an axe of cold.
7 years later.
Still buying Skyrim.
I love the internet xD
This is wholesome as fuck
8 years later, fits soo well
Are you wearing a cloak of feathers though?
This song is just a library of amazing riffs!
So true. Riffpedia.
Toxxic Zad nailed it.
If you like a lot of amazing riffs in one song i suggest checking out Tool's Jambi
Wait till you hear the album
Strange But Not A Stranger lol dude, anyone that knows The Sword definately already knows Tool
The guitar work in this song is just so solid
Lars Ulrich from Metallica suggested they play this over the speakers before they played In Indy last night. 🔥🔥
I imagine that's because they opened for Metallica on their death magnetic tour in 07. That's the exact concert that I learned of the sword and I have not looked back since
dannng this record reminds me of highschool and getting suspended for switching names with my friend, he left class via the window and i filled his test in with joke answers, we both got busted and i spent six days cruising around town on my bike listening to age of winters:)
lol you gotta pay attention in school, it's important
@@SpaceMissile not quite, man. you just have to develop that NEED and WANT to improve at all costs. the education in america is not what gets the shit done, its the attitude you're supposed to develop.
I was alot like ol 12spot up there. Now I struggle to stay motivated. I know a shit load of stuff, and taught myself to code and all that shit but I never had to do anything in life but cruise town listening to age of winters.
Peace my brothers
@@splitfacemedia8519 idunno man, maybe you lucked out. gotta look at overall trends though.
and besides, who knows how far you'd be? maybe you've limited yourself and don't even know it.
i see your point, but don't "not quite" me; school/education _is_ important.
This song has been splitting my skull for 10 years and i still absolutely love it. The Sword is one of the best bands live by far.
I just don’t get how they’re not bigger, it’s so damn good.
These guys and Kyuss are my all time favorites. They never disappoint.
Kyuss, Sleep, the Sword, TOOL, and Alice In Chains are my go to for 90s metal
@@mrgoo The Sword aren't from the 90's, as retro as they sound - Age of Winters came out in 2006.
This song rips so hard
I'm a Daughter of Freja/Freya and my kick-ass neighbor thought I'd dig this song...and I DO!!! Kinda low key embarrassed it took me this long to hear of this song and band; I was slacking, but now I'm found and am home!
Rock on y'all!! ✌️🤘
Nirvana and Metallica, I like almost all of their songs. Mostly everyone else (inlcuding The Sword) I just like only a few songs, maybe just one or two songs.
This is a good song though. I also like Iron Swan.
These guys are so underrated wtf why arent they more known who is running the music industry he or she should be fired
Because the music industry as a whole has no idea what real music is.
Because many people lack good taste in music 😟
Mainstream music sells more. Simple.
Sadly metal and rock have kinda fallen off, it’ll likely eventually happen to rap but not for awhile. It’s much easier to sign rap artists because it’s a single person with little to no instruments.
It’s definitely not dead but nowhere near mainstream anymore.
They broke up
I was very lucky to hear this song live before they broke up thank you so much for 18 years of fantastic music
first heard this song in august of 2023. This song freaking rules!
Guitar hero showed me this song. Its one of my favorite songs to play on real guitar now days lol.
Named my daughter freya she gets played this song almost everyday
nice bro
Me too brother!
Too young for kids atm but planning to do the same
Did the same, bro
Cool. It''s the name of the Godess of beauty, love and fertility in norse mythology. She's also the godess of sejd, a sort of spirit magic of invoking one's own guardian/guiding spirit.
If there was a list for most underrated metal songs this song would be at the top, those riffs sound so iconic.
I blasted through Guitar Hero, all of them, until finally hearing this. I shit my pants and cried at the same time -- I became a man. This is probably, pound-for-pound, the best song (if not band) featured in that game.
Fuck a guitar heo
Love this song. Was lucky enough to have seen Metallica when these guys and Machine Head opened up for them in January '09. What a great show it was.
They better than Metallica
I saw that tour at prudential in jersey. My first tallica show and these guys didn't disappoint at all.
Discovered from Guitar Hero, came back after God of War 4. So cool how the first lines are your main weapons.
Wait yeah what the f. I never noticed that.
Age of Winters is one of the albums on which you get stoned with the riffs. So sick!
Alin Brunetu Yeah I know. I don't like to describe sub genres but yeah, it's stoner metal :).
Late reply but, Bro the second I get another cart I’m gonna listen to this whole thing
The fact that this song takes a minute to begin any lyrics just to rip it UP with a hard ass riff is just AWESOME!
When I hear this while playing *BURNOUT DOMINATOR* especially when Road Rage at Ocean Drive
*I'm guarantee there will be no mercy for those opponent!*
Road Rage on Glacier Falls*
I feel like a badass when this song plays when wayne gets the bike out of the shed and this song comes on
I'm not a stoner at all but I've always loved this song and alot of other doom metal
Guitar Hero days!
Nothing goes better with this song than a whole mess load of explosions. Thanks just cause 4. And I know I’ve herd this beauty before.
True story. This is played in standard d tuning with dropped
Max Payne
The stoner inside me has awaken!
Bad grammar dude. Its "has awokened"
Dost Khan cant tell if youre serious or not. In any case its "has awoken"
Wrong dude. "it's" "had awoken" if you're using "awoken".
Nope, not true. "Awokened" is *not* a word. There are three past participles of the verb awake: "awoken", "awakened" and "awaked" (and as they are all past participles they can all be used with 'have', 'had' or 'has' (excluding some annoying ass scenarios)). Awoken is a somewhat old fashioned term (though not as unusual as awaked), but it remains grammatically correct. "Awokened", however, is nothing more than a weird hybrid which is ultimately incorrect.
And anyway you used the wrong "it's" too!
Hah dude grammar lesson outta ten
Every riff in this song is just fucking great
this was my gateway song into this genre and loving this band XD
Very good. Sound a lot like Black Sabbath, so it's good, can't go wrong with that.
most badass sounding song ever.
+James Kaznica You haven't heard too much music, have you?
ok so fuck you
and fuck you
you cool thought
and fuck you as well.
Wayne recommended me this ;^)
Ayyye Wayne squad
you have rason this reflects many feelings, I already wait for season 2
Hell fucking yea dude
It's making me wanna play guitar hero 2 lol
Lil Wayne?
The Sword - Freya
(Burnout Dominator) my favorite, Road rage.
Seen this band open for Kyuss, such an awesome show..
Word. Helluva show
Bro kyuss is the shit just bought 2 old school kyuss posters and hung Em up yesterday
@@mrgoo yes Kyuss is on of my all time favorite bands.
Sterling Glessing bro same with sleep and tool
I love the chugging right after the intro. They really gave just one note that much character and energy!
Awesome riff ive been playing guitar from 15 to 48 years old and never wanted to play covers. I a nonconformist a maverick type who does things his own way to express me my own language on the fretboard. Over the years I hear riff that I've discovered jamming. One day my cousin and a guitarist also had this album and said hey cuz listen to this and instantly hear my riff maybe 90% of it was the same. I know you people will say yeah right whats your band called. Im not that player who plays for money or fame or chicks i play because i love to play. Its my therapy it saved my life its the only thing I've started and never quit.
Opening riff is one of the greatest riffs ever
Fire. One of the best metal songs of all time.
all songs should have this riff.
I was born too late to explore the Earth.
I was born too early to explore the stars.
I couldn't fucking care less because somehow I managed to exist at precisely the right time to be able to see MetallicA, the absolute madman Phil Anselmo's kick ass band Down, and The Sword perform live in the same building on the same night. Also, does anyone know of a cure for involuntary headbanging? It's been about 7 years since that show and my neck is unbelievably tired. \m/ \m/
FullTruckerFX you my friend have probably won the game of life
Only thing I've had close to that was Behemoth, Lamb of God and Slayer in Nashville TN.
Also saw Phil with Superjoint in Knoxville. He's still the absolute madman.
Bucketlist accomplished!
I thought this was gonna be some lewronggeneration shit but nah jussst good old music appreciation
Ive seen Down... And they truly are amazing live!
Freya Godness of the Vikings culture
This song and The Black River are two of my all time favorite metal songs. THE SWORD KICKS FUCKING ASS!!!
WAYNE 💖
Ah the sword. Viking Rock! Go Minnesota 💪💙😎
The part at 2:52 is so heavy oh man its amazing
My 11 year old daughter Freya brought this song to my attention💜🗡
Great band. Love this song!
Heard this one morning on MTV before school when i was 15 in 2006. Been a fan ever since! I bought my copy of GOTE from Circuit City!!!! Ahaha
This song brings back rockin memories!
I now can’t read about Freya/Freyja without hearing this song. That riff is epic.
1:55 omg that fucking riff!
There's nothing about this that doesn't kick ass!
I'm 49 just discovered The Sword, best 21 secure metal band!!!
Can't believe that I'll never see this Band live, but i'm for sure gonna blast their entire catalogue on max volume tonight. All hail The Sword 🤟
Amazing tune.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
This song has been stuck in my head since I found out this band is opening for Primus on their new rush tribute tour
Only did it once but I heard this tripping on shrooms before and omg. Took me to another freaking level of bliss!
Wayne brought me to this track 🤘🤘
God damn this song gets my blood pumping
Witchfinder General vibes are heavy here. This shiit is gold
:
GOD!!! these guys are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Sword is live so awesome!
This song is a hidden gem.
Splendid!
guitar hero 2 brought me here long long ago and i loved it
Best song to listen to while playing God of War 4.
Love old school sword 🗡
Reminds me a little of Sabbath.
a little? a lot!
Agreed. Sabbath influenced.
The Sabbath is strong with The Sword
@@z-z-z-z ,
"Reminds me a little of Sabbath" = The whole Stoner/Doom subgenre.
THE SWORD!
Sick opening riff. Metal forever!
The Sword was badass live
Hell yeah 🤘
Hell yeahhhh
This is so good.
BADASS OF THE WEEK: The Viking of Stamford Bridge
Brought me here
RIP this amazing band
What happened?
@@Strideo1 "On October 20, 2022, John D. Cronise announced the band was splitting up after 19 years." - Wiki
No idea why, though. This is so sad.
@@paoloverdini8374 Aww man. 🙁
Thanks for the info though.
Big fan of Sleep, Earth, Sun O)))) etc. Love this "post sabbath" sound
When your bridge is so good you want it to just. Keep. Going.
I love that band.
Because of this,i learn to appreciate even the instrumentals(lyrics-less)
I can't help not to head bang my head , this is so good ♡~
Freya is a stone cold classic
damn, so glad i heard of this band through guitar hero 2, absolutely QUALITY
This song is awesome.
I like this song so much, it reminds me a lot of the intro song in space ghost coast to coast!!!!!!!!!
I remembered this song from guitar hero and many years later a friend told me to check the band out. So I put their Spotify on shuffle as any rational person would do and when I heard this song I was like, "Oh, holy shit! I remember this song!"
The Sword, nuff said
OVER 9000!!!
Winter has come.......its fvcking awesome
Guitar Hero 2!
Most hand crampening song on there! lol
