What really elevated this movie for me was the depiction of masculinity/femininity insecurity among teenagers. The axious terror on the boys faces as one of the girls tells them she knows who has the biggest penis, or the girl being galvanized into "trimming her bush" through off-handed insults. That kinda alertness to teenage insecurity is uncommon in film.
Being european... I miss out on a lot of this american corporate movie drama and I never heard of most of the movies you talk about. I am happy that you present some really cool movies and talk about the production (not only the plot). I love this channel.
I do agree. With films, as with books, paintings, and all artistic endeavours, we should judge the final product, good or bad. But knowing its history, issues that arose, the people involved, what company produced, how, why some decisions were taken, lack of funds or otherwise... it helps me to understand WHY the final version got to be the way it is. It all adds up to create a more complete picture. Some of the films in this series I consider them quite good regardless.... In the Mouth of Madness, 30 Days of Night, the Stepfather, Event Horizon...
So the Midnight Madness audience of Horror fans cheered, and the test audience of who knows who hated the film. And they took the reaction of a test audience over a horror fan audience? That's insane!!
Warstub Typical business practices of the Weinsteins right there. God forbid they actually listen to the audience the movie is made for versus some random test audience.
It kinda makes sense... think in terms of maximizing the number of people who will go see it. What % of the general pop are hardcore horror fans? Can those people gross millions of dollars of profit for a movie?? You want to test screen with general public, because they will potentially give you the huge profits!
The sequel of "The thing" was made with practical effects (like the original) but the test audience didnt like it...the company proceeded to botch the movie doing the scenes mostly all Cgi... Sometimes i lost faith in humanity :(

This is one of my favorite post modern slasher movies. I love the sick twist in the end as well as the unique take on the Final Girl trope. Just one glaring plot hole tho. Did she take Emmet's manifesto because, if not, it'll surely mention her in it and lead the cops right to her.
This really cleared some things up, I was always unsure exactly why they kept it on the shelf for so long but this is a pretty informative and detailed timeline. Great review!
This was a great movie, and it actually came out here in Brazil almost immediately after it premiered in festivals. Sucks that it took so long to get released in the US.
I've aways appreciated the 70's era of horror when the slasher film as we know them now had their real genesis this is definitely an homage to that era and aesthetic now i must watch this again once again an in-depth informative review CHEERS!!
I managed to catch 2/3s or maybe just 1/2 of this at the local movie festival a few years ago. Almost the entire theater was laughing at a a line shortly after I got in, which made me wonder if it was supposed to be a funny movie. One day I'll see all of it.
It's a decent subversive take on the slasher. I'm glad it got released. It's definitely my favourite film from the director. Although, Warm Bodies was okay.
Watched half of this video, stopped at the spoiler warning, turned on Mandy Lane on Netflix and then finshed the video. Throughly enjoyable review and good recommendation.
I think the movie's value just skyrocketed after the final verdict with Depp WINNING against Amber Heard. The movie portrays her in near dead accuracy... a professional and manipulative liar. ;-)
This was great to hear. I was at the TIFF premiere of this and was so disappointed when it went into turnaround. Your channel and videos are amazing. I just discovered this and knew I recognized the voice from Radiodrome. Fantastic! I'm a happy new subscriber.
Thanks. I actually have this movie, but have never watched it. So, when you said 'if you don't want it spoiled...' I skipped to the end. Now that I know some history about it, I'll definitely watch it! Thanks again. tavi.
@WildKamots You should really delete that comment. It's so sad how you were going for that "gotcha" moment but then you just ended up looking like an asshole. Not only that, but you replied to a three year old comment. That's just pathetic. Go back to the kids' table where you belong.
@Marnie Coulson Except it isn't a "gotcha moment". The Natural Selection shitt is an icon of Columnine regardless of it's phrases non-shirt origin. What the kid did was as silly as saying "Sandra Bullock doesn't star in Gravity. Isaac Newton discovered gravity" I didn't respond to it because the assholiness refutes itself. Imagine thinking someone knew about Columbine but not basic biology.
I like these shows! Keep'em coming. I just love the endings, though. I am looking at the whole thing waiting for that brutal punchline :D Who's Your Caddy! Hilarious!
That was super deep man. I have loved this movie since i saw it 4 years ago. The title, the movie and Amber Heard just an awesome and highly underrated horror film and I thank you for giving me even more reasons to appreciate it in a really exploitative perspective. This is one of your best yet and once again perfect choice 👍
I got to see this on the big screen at Frightfest in the UK back in 2007. It was the last film on the Friday and after after watching horror movies all Thursday and Friday I was already a bit jaded. I remember that festival for the Seed / Postal double bill, Hatchet, The Signal and the Orphanage on the final night, but not Mandy Lane. Its clearly worth a revisit :-)
I did like the movie and also have it in my collection but this video really gives me a whole other apreciation for the film because it was so hard to get it released!! Great video!!
I didn't even know about this movie until you made this video. I watched it and it was weird but enjoyable. The characters were annoying but Mandy Lane was fascinating
Just saw it. Last time I watched it like 5 years ago. There is a big "bug" in the movie. They fall into mud, here hair is all messed up, but in the jeep in the end it is totally fine. Not sure how they did not see it. Also, she falls into pit while running straight into it. She would see that from far away. But in general, I love this movie. In the scene where Amber kills, her face change was acted very good.
New sub here!!!! I am SO happy that I found tour channel! I’ve been binging your vids and have been introduced to so many amazing movies that I haven’t even heard of! Thanks for the spoiler alert too btw! I took your advice and watched this movie before finishing this vid. Loved. It!!!!! 10/10 🧡
Watched this film tonight... Nope, it's not good. I really didn't like it very much, couldn't get into it really, and the "twist" ending didn't work at all - it made no sense and wasn't hinted at. There's no moment where you go "oooh, so that's..." after its revealed, instead it's all just "oh, but then why...".
+CarrieAnne Betts Yeah, I did too. I wasn't much into the first half - typical boring teen movie - but after the first kill I kept seeing Mandy Lane give dodgy looks. She only stopped Garth's phonecall when it was obvious Red was failing to do so himself.
Just watched it! totally caught me off guard. You definitely have to be open minded when starting this film. It's ascetically well put together imo and gorgeous film to pick apart. Ultimately, the movie is relate-able for kids been through high school and designed to hook you right as the title appears. It causes you feel sympathy for Emmett, show you that he's become a killer, but shock you to know Mandy is in on the killing. Simple as that.
I was able to get my hands on a copy of the film and while it`s not great, it has an interesting premise. The weak part in my opinion are the parts with Emmett. I agree that the casting of Amber Heard as Lane is spot on though!
Great episode and we'll researched. I remember all the hype back in 2007 from the horror websites, but the film never seemed to get a release. When it did get the video release in 2013, the film was still good, but the plot twist had occurred in other films. Too bad, because the twist would have been more of a shock in 2007.
I don't know many details of test audiences, but the concept just seems so stupid to me. There are millions upon millions of movie goers out there and no matter how good or bad a movie is, many will love it, many will hate it and many will go "meh." What the hell is a tiny sample of people supposed to tell them about their movie? Just release it and let it fall or stand on it's merits like any movie has to do.
i.love your videos..so informative and funny and this may sound wierd but you have a calming voice. as soon as i can i shall be a supporter. thank you so much!!!
Its a brilliant film, not flawless of course but well done indeed, one of the few I casualy watched and still actually remember. The ending was a surprise for me, I felt dumb but hey, I fell for it I was too distracted looking at the girl. This is what "era" movies should look like, a movie to watch multiple times and to force people to see.
I saw this on TV a few days ago and really enjoyed it. It did seem like to me when it was finally released in the UK, it was sold as something different to what it was, but I didn't realise it took so long to get released in the US
Amber Heard will always be Mandy Lane in my eyes,i saw that movie in 2007 i think and i recently watched it in 2014. You forgot to mention Whitney Able the actress who played Chloe in the movie, was also in Gareth Edwards directorial debut Monsters 2010.
If there is one film "company" that I'm really surprised by its continuing existence is The Weinstein Company. Christ, their screw ups are infamous and full of dumbassery.
This is impossible however, I remember having seen this movie in 2007/2008 in the movie-theaters in Holland. They have a movie showing on Tuesday where you don't know what you're going to see, but it's always a movie that hasn't come out yet. How is this possible then?
At the time. She was the prettiest woman I ever saw. She's still attractive, but by all accounts batshit crazy. This role and film reflects her personality perfectly. Desirable, timid, beautiful. Deadly, dangerous, deranged. This is her for sure
Amber Heard was brilliantly cast, but the film isn't very good unfortunately. Not horrible though, should be worth checking out for genre fans especially.
i beg to differ i love the move and most importantly the soundtrack. Unfortunately though, you cant even get the soundtrack because they didn't officially released it. There's a good rendition of Sister Golden Hair and you cant find that anywhere else but the scene that it played in. I even contacted the singer of that track -Juliette Commagere and they didn't even get a copy of that recorded song. sigh.
Yeah, it felt very 2000s low budget generic horror film to me. I just done understand the praise for this film. I usually am the one defending horror movies people claim either suck or are overrated but I just don't get this one. Like when he's sucking the movies dick for how it was well shot. Every shot he showed for one didn't look unique or interesting at all. They had the quality of a syfy movie. Just because a filmmaker does specific shit or is trying to be reminiscent of actual good films. Doesn't mean back shit if they fail at it.
This literally just popped up in my Netflix queue last week...it was a fun ride. Have you ever considered doing Yul Brenner's post apocalyptic thriller "The Ultimate Warrior"?
I thought it was generic and a little overated.. IT wasn't bad, but I have problems seeing what the big deal is. Soo many horror fans praised it. Im thinking the twist ending helped the film alot.
I DESPERATELY NEED THE TRACK FROM JULIETTE C'S SISTER GOLDEN HAIR HALP! been looking for that track for years and theres no official recording for that track >
this is one of the best horror films ever, only my theory for all the murders is that she wanted to look even better, so people would admire her even more because they would think that she is so brave and pure
Almost all the great films of the last 50 years, Oscar Winners or not, were hated by test audiences at the first screening. Hollywood needs to find a better system.
@GoodBadFlicks keep up the good work. I hope your UA-cam channel will not fall foul to copyright laws. Thanks for creating your UA-cam channel I love it.
Thank you Cecil I will definitely check this out. Also if you have tried to reply to me in some way I am sorry, my internet is out and all I have is my phone that doesn't show UA-cam notifications. P.S Did you see age of ultron? If so what are your thoughts on the movie? Because for some reason I am a little disappointed in the fact that their was to much action (I know rite! Weird. Even though MOS was perfect with story and action in my opinion) and to little story.
I'm glad Weinstein wasn't the one to release it. Fuck him! I remember I bought it when it got it's release on dvd here in the UK and even by then had heard so much about it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this movie.
Good points you made there, but I find them to be a very thin layer in the "over-all" tone shifting, character interactions, story-line and being interesting in general. The filmmaking such as the editing, cinematography, the style and sound, was great. But I thought they needed more time to work on the story to be put better in order to get the message properly, with that said, even though you'll get the message it still feels stiff and out-of-the-blue-couldn't-really-give-a-fuck, because of previous flaws i just mentioned. By the way, great video.
I have two movies that I think you should review. "The Dark side of the Moon" and "Moontrap". Those two movies came out around 89-90. You have alot of similar taste in movies as I do. These would be fantastic for you to watch and review.
Well, there are two reasons, aside from MovieJunkie's suggestion of tipping you off to the twist, not to do that: first, it could have led you to feel sorry for Mandy and implied that her victims deserved it, and Mandy wasn't meant to be a sympathetic villain. As the video narrator explained, 'the kids weren't awful, they were just kids'. She's not supposed to be a Carrie White character bullied to the edge; she's actually a bad person. Secondly, you're assuming she must have been ugly and was treated horribly, but that isn't necessarily the case. She might have just been shy and awkward or sort of invisible. Being a social outcast doesn't always mean the person was ugly. Mandy's thinking was more complicated than a simple concept of "I'm getting back at everyone for picking on me".
I LOVE THIS MOVIE, it's cerebral and explains why the "teatv audience of idiots" didn't "get it". Horror movie fans will. Only got this last month, it shot straight to the top of my favorite horror slasher lists of all time, truly an odd and unique little slasher. It created one of the most unique atmospheres that came out of the screen and brought you into it that i've ever seen. I "felt" stoned/foggy/disjointed while watching it, as most of the characters are stoned for the last 2 acts of the film, I've never seen a movie that made you actually "feel" the same way and saw everything through this drugged feeling haze, very interesting and very glad to have it in my horror collection.
What really elevated this movie for me was the depiction of masculinity/femininity insecurity among teenagers. The axious terror on the boys faces as one of the girls tells them she knows who has the biggest penis, or the girl being galvanized into "trimming her bush" through off-handed insults.
I even contacted the singer of that track -Juliette Commagere and they didn't even get a copy of that recorded song. sigh.
calencor I can tell by the way you present yourself that you are a huge fu?!*ng tool.
You should do an exploring video on "Stay".
You should do an exploring for it follows :)
I remember seeing this in Sweden back in 2008 - 2009. Never knew it was shelved in the US.
It’s pretty much like a dollar store version of “X”, but the twist was well done in my opinion. And grind house feel added to it’s overall quality.
XxVendetaxX1 haven't seen Ultron yet
Emmet is lovely! ❤️
I'm glad Weinstein wasn't the one to release it. Fuck him! I remember I bought it when it got it's release on dvd here in the UK and even by then had heard so much about it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this movie.
Audiences slept on this movie.. much like High Tension.
Wait you said the movie had a 2013 dvd release but i bought the dvd here in the nethelands like in 2008 2009 i think...
Who would have known that 7 years later, this movie would become relevant as all hell?
Good points you made there, but I find them to be a very thin layer in the "over-all" tone shifting, character interactions, story-line and being interesting in general. The filmmaking such as the editing, cinematography, the style and sound, was great. But I thought they needed more time to work on the story to be put better in order to get the message properly, with that said, even though you'll get the message it still feels stiff and out-of-the-blue-couldn't-really-give-a-fuck, because of previous flaws i just mentioned.
By the way, great video.
Sölvi Elísabetarson thanks!
I love the mad orange cat that looks like mad max.
Jacob Wilson :)
6:57 that age like fine wine, she sure was and is lol.
What do you think of Dog Soldiers from 2002?
It had a theatrical release in UK
I have two movies that I think you should review. "The Dark side of the Moon" and "Moontrap". Those two movies came out around 89-90. You have alot of similar taste in movies as I do. These would be fantastic for you to watch and review.
Havoc800 both of which should be some time later in the year
I think if they would've shown what she looked like and how they treated her before hand it might've resonated better with me
They trust that you can feed yourself. You should be flattered.
I get that, but I think showing that would've tipped their hand on who Mandy was.
I'm sure I saw this as a trailer in the UK before Wrath of the Titans (not sure though) so it did have a release in the UK I believe
Very awesomeand interesting exploration! :)
I have to watch this movie!
gabe6550 thanks!
I know this movie is good
YES!!!
always a good way to start a day with your vids
edgar velasco :)
This video was great you answered all my questions about the end
