This was exceptional. TLDR warning. As a kid growing up on Take Off magazine and Reaching for the Skies, I consumed all that I could about my favourite aircraft and others. The rich details that came from those who were there was what I loved the most. These guys walked the walk, shot down Migs, blew up SAMS, flew in the Battle of Britain or the Bomber Command stream to Berlin etc. 10 percent true is, to me, without equal when it comes to the subject matter at hand. Steve continually spoils us with the quality of his interviews and the quality of his guests. Starbaby’s turn is definitely a highlight. This was accessible to many without grating on those who already have an idea but dripping in glorious detail and coloured in with enthusiasm and expertise. In a world where you can distill a 55 minute History Channel/Nat Geo programme down to approximately 10 mins of actual content padded out with repetition and reporting for the masses, it is a treat to tune into 10 percent true for amazing content like this. Thank you Steve. Again. Simply exceptional.
Mainstream documentaries drive me bananas.I just know that a documentary about a modern jet is usually going to start with the Montgolfiers balloon, then WW-1, WW-2, the Korean War, Vietnam and by the time they finally get to the airframe in question there'll be a recap every couple of minutes because no-one these days has any kind of attention span. I stopped watching them a long time ago.
I rarely comment on youtube, but this was so amazing I couldn't stop myself. I feel like I just got a crash course in being a WSO. So much attention to details and Starbaby is an amazing speaker!
Awesome story! Ended up in that same area in '03-'04 during OIF. Mosul, Q-West, all around there during the invasion in my CH-47 (A/7-101st ABN "Pachyderms") Even came across one of the Rolands he'd mentioned (the hard way) but luckily the APR-39 RWR was on the ball that day and spared me making the news (also, the hard way). 😉 God Bless You, Sir.

Starbaby is just SO entertaining! He has the perfect blend of aviator humour, sarcasm & eloquence. It was also a great insight into dynamic targeting/DEAD. I flew out of Incirlik in early '98 on the GR1 doing recce & it was not a big AOR so I think they did really well. I love the quality of their mapping function - it made a mockery of what our Navs had to deal with, especially from ML. Even more Starbaby please!

Fascinating story and just incredible to be able to go through the tape and pick it apart with Starbaby. Setting it up with Google maps was also a great addition. Just about the only way to make it better would be to find one of the poor bastards down at that SA-3 site to give their perspective on the engagement.
