@@StarbabyAirPiracyProductions - I look forward to every episode that Steve & yourself put out.... I wanted to go Air Force & fly.... wasn't an option back then.... If you want the Navy version of that strike into Serbia on NODs from the POV of the Tomcat Driver, you'd need to talk to either CAPT Sam "Slammer" Richardson or RADM Ted "Slapshot" Carter.
Speaking of flying during the night with Strike Eagle, did the Lantirn pod ever have a air to air mode/IRST features? I heard tomcat pilots preferred using the the lantirn when possible for IRST due to higher res than the integrated sensor?
Great stories and AirPiracy footage Starbaby and 10 Percent True. Celestial Infant was the Wing EWO in the DC Guard?! Steve, you’ve got to ask him about that!
First of all a great series of videos, and huge thanks to Starbaby for sharing of these stories from the Balkans. To make it more than 10% true I'll try to give you info about same events but from Serbian side ;) Without political shit, no assumption and without too much personal convictions. The mentioned information will either wrap-up Starbabys story, correct some wrong information, or just simply show what effect the actions had. Topic no.1 : Let's talk about "00:34:40 Let’s talk bridges" The bridge in question is in the small town of Trstenik, in central Serbia. It was hit around 2:10 p.m. on April 30, 1999. Two people died on the bridge, Nadežda Petričković (44) and Dejan Đorđević (40), both civilians. In addition to them, another 17 civilians were injured, 4 of them seriously. Given that the bridge is located near the city center, the detonation damaged the windows and facades of a number of buildings, including the local church. It is interesting that this bridge, also known as the "old bridge", was built in 1899 and was demolished on its 100th anniversary. Otherwise, from a military point of view, it was a irrelevant target at that time. The second bridge, which is only 400 meters away and which was much newer and larger, somewhat more important in the military sense, was never targeted. In general, there were no significant military forces in and around the town of Trstenik during '99 war. It seemed to me both then and now that NATO was running out of targets and that it has become more important to do anything that can be shown at a press conference (anyone remember NATO spokesperson Jamie Shea?), than to actually cause damage to the forces of the Yugoslav army.
For some reason my reply has disappeared. Probably operator error on my part. In terms of the bridge targeting, bridges are militarily relevant targets, because they are part of an interdiction campaign intended to prevent the movement of equipment, supplies, forces and fuel. There were bridges on the no-strike list, but it was never clear to us why one bridge would be dropped an another wouldn't. If I had to choose between two bridges to hit along this stretch of river, I'd have picked the other one, precisely because it was further away from the settlement. The village of Trstenik is precisely the reason we attacked along the river axis, so that a bomb that went long or short would fall in the river (they rarely miss left or right). It's also why I dropped on the middle of the span and not on the shoreline, to try and minimize the damage to the inn nest to the bridge abutment. We were under no illusions that we would not break a lot of glass in the process, and flying glass injuries are nasty. In the operation there was definitely some slop in the target selection, because SHAPE and SACEUR had not thought more than three days in advance and never built a coherent air campaign plan, which is why I describe the campaign as casual vandalism on a grand scale.
I wonder what the trade offs with a towed decoy are ? If there’s something close to your vicinity that can give off its position and the enemy isn’t stupid that has to be some kind of drawback. Like playing hide and go seek in the dark but your holding a flashlight one meter away from you.
Most self-protection jamming is repeater jamming, meaning it only comes on when a relevant signal comes on the air. Think of it as an 11-year old who, when called a name, will say "I know you are but what am I" until you give up and go away.
@@Lochaby They did, actually. They just didn't both hit the bridge. I would guess that the long bomb sailed slightly above or below the bridge deck and missed the structure.
Finally! My weekly dose of Starbaby arrived! I love you guys!
