The Death of Mr. Freeze in Batman Beyond and the last moments of Ace in Justice League Unlimited are two saddest moments in the DCAU, possibly television of that era. Ironically, both of them involve Batman, both Bruce and Terry, at different points in the story's narrative.
A small detail or bit of subtext that I always found powerful about this portrayal of Freeze is that when he says this to Terry, he's really making no distinction between Terry and Bruce. BATMAN was the only one who cared enough to try and help him his entire career as Mr. Freeze. Even if Freeze logically knows this can't be the same Batman he faced 50 years ago, he responds to him emotionally in the same exact way.
@@felipea1399 Not the ay Kevin Conroy did it, nor for the reason why. Michael Keaton pitched his voice down a little bit for the same reason why Adam West used a flatter tone. It was only to hide his voice. Kevin gave a completely different performance for Batman and Bruice becuase he individually outside of the writer's room established the idea that Batman was the person and Bruce was the mask he wore.
Freeze is hard to write as a villain because he’s the closest of all the rouges to being rehabilitated. If people would let him deal with his depression he’d be fine.
The thing is, Victor would never, ever willingly deal with his depression on his own. Even before he transformed, Victor embezzled millions of dollars in order to save his wife. Victor clearly has a "the ends justify the means" mentality. Committing crimes to fund his cryo suit and Nora's cryo cell, doing research on her disease, pursuing his revenge on Ferris Boyle and maintaining strict secrecy about his location, finances and wider activities consumed his every waking second after he was mutated. And I'm not sure his frozen form actually required sleep any more. That kind of single-minded fixation is not something that can be "fixed" with any amount of therapy. That's the central pillar of Victor's personality.
"Think of it, Batman- To never again walk on a summer's day with a hot wind in your face, and a warm hand to hold...oh yes, I'd KILL FOR THAT." Such a good line.
The DCAU Mr. Freeze is *so* close to being an anti-hero. For so much of his extended story, his only motivations are true love and revenge. Once both motivations are satisfied, he's immortal but also an empty shell.
I know what you mean. Victor was always took in advantage of by greedy people, and you know It's 1 of the reasons why he's so uncaring towards the people that he hurts because despite his cold personality there is a good man that wants to help people, But after being used by the worst kind people hes not sure hes able to trust People whether they be genuine or not.
I've seen Elseworlds stories where Victor works for Wayne Industries. Bruce never would have missed the embezzling which led to the cryo cell and lab accident which caused Victor's mutations. Without the cryo cell, Nora's disease would have progressed beyond the point where she could be cured. Sadly, I don't think Bruce and Victor would ever be friends. But there is a potential future where Victor becomes one of Terry's mentors alongside Bruce. That's an interesting thought.
Its worth noting that earlier seasons Batman was a lot more visibly compassionate. We saw much more of Bruce showing his inner sadness and the empathy that came from that. Later seasons would have him being Batman almost full time as some distant overpowered loner.
I know this was about Victor, but I can’t help but see how this further cements Terry as Bruce’s successor. He still saw the humanity in Victor and pitied him, just like Bruce did all those years ago.
freeze is perhaps the most human of the batman rogue's gallery, despite his inhuman manner. his motivations are love and grief, things almost everyone understand. he does keep up the theme of "obsession," though. now that i think on it, that's probably the most common thread for batman villains.
Freeze's theme on Batman Beyond titled: "Farewells" is simply amazing. It shares a part in the theme alongside terry's father. With the melancholic and saddening chords alongside dramatic choir that perfectly encapsulate Victor Fries's loneliness and his despair upon his final words to Batman. He realizes, too late that this is his penance for all the evil he has brought to the world from his own self made unwillingness to let his wife go. To accept her death as it should have been. And in the end, all the world will ever know him as is a metal monster with a heart of ice. At his lowest point in life, when all he knew is long dead and gone, and only his greatest adversary remains; he finally realizes who he is. What he is. A sad, sad man who should have died a long time ago. A man who has only brought pain. In the end the only thing that is left for Fries is a boy who will never truly know him, who all the same wishes to save him. A boy who saw good in him, just as his mentor did long ago. And they were right. There is a good man with a warm hand and beating heart under the blizzard that is Mr. Freeze. But that doesn't matter anymore, nothing does. For Fries is doomed to destroy himself, who he is. To return to what he became. No justice can help change the man he is, neither can revenge or judgement. Deciding his only recompense is to say his Farewells. To his life, to his love and the world he hurt. In his end his only deliverance is... *A Cold and Lonesome Grave.*
I feel especially after mr freeze: one bad day, it is INCREDIBLY hard for anyone not to put him in top 10 villains, not just for his character but his relatability, understanding.
omg someome who knows about one bad series! If i'm not wrong it was meant to become the definitive takes for The Bat's villians (correct if i'm wrong). Anyway, it is true. After reading One Bad Day it all clicked and made soooo much sense and it's sad that Robin (Dick Grayson) still hoped to help, wanted to save him and her, and actively worked for that but Mr. Freeze was still that selfish husband at the end of the day.
Might be the fact we watched Subzero until the disc broke, but the tragedy of Victor Fries is one of my favorite beats in Batman stories. Well communicated here despite the hay fever related face melting
Victor Fries was easily my favorite of Batman's rogues. Even though he committed many murders and crimes, I can't bring myself to hate him the way I can people like Ra's al Ghul or The Joker. Fries was a tragic man, reinvented in the Bruce Timm era into a truly compelling character who lost everything. If Batman is the antithesis of Joker's One Bad Day hypothesis, then Victor Fries truly stands in the middle, as he never lost his humanity when forced to comprehend the damage caused by his actions. He had everything taken from him. His wife, his body, and even the possibility of death to end his suffering. As shown in Batman Beyond, which showed his true colors when provided the help he so desperately needed, he was a kind and generous soul. For a short while, he achieved the emotional equilibrium needed to become whole again, even though he still harbored a truly titanic amount of guilt for all the lives he took and put his money where his mouth was, doing what he could to make up for his actions. He knew he'd been screwed, but he was still willing to make amends when given the chance, showing that while he was one of Batman's Rogues, he wasn't a true villain. Just a broken man looking for hope in a world that had left him void of nearly any trace of warmth. And his interactions with Terry showed us how different Terry was from Bruce, but also how similar the two Batmen were as well. Fries's life highlighted the extremes of human grief. To quote God of War Ragnarok: To grieve deeply is to have loved fully. And Victor Fries loved very very deeply.
Freeze is fantastic. Joker may be one of the more entertaining villains but Freeze is by far one of the most emotionally investing one. BTAS has quite a few great tragic villains like Two-Face and Baby Doll but Freeze has always felt the most sympathetic. I still think making him a head in a jar was just a very odd choice bit Batman Beyond really made the tragedy of his character come through and managed to end it respectfully.
Overall I honestly thought Mr. Freeze was written better in the Arkham games than in the Animated Series and how his story concludes in Arkham Knight is one of the best moments with the character in any medium and I would say better than how his story concluded in the SubZero movie and his later appearances in the DCAU. Not to mention the tremendous job they did with Nora, taking her out of her refrigeration unit and giving her her own agency.
I completely agree. That sombre music in the background as Victor acknowledges his failure to save her and that they are running out of time and she replied, "Time has never been on our side." I bawled my eyes out
@@wafagdplqs4421 that's true, BTAS laid the foundations for others to build upon. And I'd also like to add that Batman never viewed Victor as a supervillain thus had never refer to him as Mr. Freeze. He always called him Victor at least that's according to what I remember. Oh and also he's my favorite Batman villain! Hahah can't leave that out
"Revenge is a dish best served cold." Countless actors have said this line over the decades, but out of all them, Victor Freeze does it the best. He was a very complicated villain...
have loved your video essays since forever but this really highlights your ability to elicit feelings through your editing and the story in your head. this got me very emotional. you should be extremely proud of this.
i dont know if you will see or read this, but this was an amazing experience. You truly have a talent for your craft, and have made it truly an artform. I wish and pray for you to feel better from your hay fever, and I loved this video you put out. The format was, simply stated, beautiful, and enhanced the message you wished to share through this video. Thank you.
Mr. Freeze was always my favorite Batman villain, if not my favorite DC villain, and how he's portrayed in the BTAS and other related shows is easily my favorite iteration of him. As much as I'd love to hear a voice-over version of this video, it feels wrong to scratch over this composition of artful storytelling. Feels... Cold, to ask, I guess.
I think choosing Dr.Frieze for this style of video was the best decision. He's one of if not the most well written character from the Batman animated series'. It doesn't take any explaining to understand him and where he comes from, as he does a great job all on his own. A very human character who is denied what they want at every turn. Thinking about it now, Frieze acting on his emotions more than logic makes perfect sense. His emotions are the only thing he can feel anymore. Even as a child I could recognize Frieze wasn't an evil person. I honestly don't blame him once he's merely a disembodied head. He can't feel anything physical, can't interact with the world. Doesn't age. . . He's a brilliant man too. The world knows how important he is. Batman, both of them, know he's a good man. Friez is honestly the most depressing antagonist in Batman's rogues gallery. He's the representation of what Batman believes, that these people can be redeemed. Yet, just like how Friez is denied at every turn any chance of being happy, every time he turns around and starts to be on the right path, he is betrayed and pushed further. Giving up Nora was a a big growth of character for him. He succeeded in giving her her life back. He knew he would out live her, but being only a head, he wanted her to remember him the same way he remembered her, as they were before all this happened. Before he became a villain, before he killed people, and before he became trapped in a metal body.
I kind of appreciate the lack of script over this video, because it's kind of best to just let the story speak for itself. This was beautiful, thank you
Excellent choices, in your editing of clips, for each segment’s theme. That Batman Beyond episode, was such a good story, and with the Dark Knight Returns, inspired episode, Freeze ended up being there right at the end, and beyond.
There is a Batman Adventures comic set between Cold Comfort and Meltdown. In the comic, Nora got remarried to the doctor who performed the operation that cured her. But her new husband is attacked by a robot with a freeze gun. Batman thinks Mr. Freeze tried to kill Nora's new husband and goes looking for him. Batgirl continued to investigate and finds out that Nora was still in love with Fries so her new husband staged the robot attack to frame Fries. As Batman is battling Freeze in the Arctic, Batgirl and Nora show up to get them to stop. But the fight causes the ice to crack and Nora almost falls into the water. Freeze sacrifices himself and by using his robot suit to save Nora. Weeks later, Nora is seen going into the Arctic to in search of Fries. And it's implied that Nora spent the rest of her life trying to find Fries.
I really like these kind of videos too - They feel like old Music Videos in their editing and their rapid-fire samples, but with a focus on character highlights in a thematic order. It's really a very fun kind of video!
Freeze is really the only villain in Batman's gallery that sometimes, you just want to see him win. That first episode no tears would've been shed if he'd gotten Boyle. More than any of them, even Harleen, Harvey, and Pamela, Dr. Victor Fries is the one that just needs justice and salvation.
Depression, nihilism, the sureness he has that he's beyond saving... I think that if everybody had powers, there would be a lot of Mr Freeze-es walking around.
@@1eyeddevil929 I hope the next time you're depressed and hate your life that you remember just how 'pathetic' you will be forced to consider yourself. Or are you just a hypocrite talking big where they can?
FR FR Victor is THE goat, he's so amazingly written and so god damn mother fucking easy to understand. He's the best batman rouge and h=every story he is in is a pure emotional roller-coaster.
Definitely an odd one but very well done, I prefer when you're talking over the videos but I'm eager to see what else you make in this style if you find it enjoyable.
I like this format, clever solution. I've made a few character tribute and episode videos, myself. I haven't been able to edit lately, but I hope I can get back to it soon. :)
I've always liked your previous edits where it's just music with clips from the show. I do love your more insightful videos with your own opinions and thoughts on specific characters or themes but this longer form "no commentary" edit was great. I hope you make a few more of these as well as your regular commentary type video essay style ones.
The fact that they implied in the show that his body was degenerating progressively trough out his life as mr frese and it eventually degenerated to the point he was reduced to a head with life supor equipment fixed on it was genuinely haunting when you look back at this episode
I like this video type. I still feel that there is merit & benefits to explaining & talking about a character, but sometimes it’s just best to show a character rather than just talk about them.
I think the use of the subtitles can be managed better, but Mr. Freeze's story is perfect for this format of video and it's all the more tear-jerking to watch it unfold like this than it is to listen to someone talk about why it's sad. That being said, I think traditional essays will prolly get more views, but I'm still going to watch these either way if they're over a topic like this
Really liked the new video style, the video essays are more my thing but this was really enjoyable to watch and I will definitely watch more videos like this if it’s what you want to make!
Mr Freeze is a very sad character. When I was a kid he was always a favorite of mine. He's a perfectly well meaning guy, he just went to the extreme because he wanted to save his terminally ill wife.
Wow! Successful experiment! This was amazing! I had no idea what I was clicking on when this popped up on my recommended page, but I'm so glad I clicked it. This was so neat and I hope more like this is to come in the future
Still hoping this type of story for him get adapted for one of the Reeves films. Id love this tragic force of nature to have a purpose beyond just what Batman and Robin offered--as much as I love that wack-ass roller coaster
It was a fine Tribute video. But I think the reason we all watch your videos is for your beautiful voice. And the way you say “World”. Like… Woud. I love it. I can’t do the accent. You’re the best.
I’ve been seeing so much of mr freeze lately…which I love cause he’s my second favorite villain. But I can’t help feel we are manifesting mrfreeze into The Batman part II… AND IVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED.
Freeze deserved a better ending than what he got in Batman beyond. The shot of him walking away with the polar bears after realizing his wife survived should have been where his story ended. Everything after that was just misery.
An admirable experiment. It’s good that you’re trying new things, but something about it didn’t quite connect. I think it may have been the nonlinear storytelling aspect of it. I think you were trying to compile similar themes and moments from different episodes, which is damn clever, and an interesting way to circumvent the “previously on…” feeling these sorts of things often have (and you did. Congrats!) but there was a sort of cacophony for me, where my brain was struggling to create a narrative, construct a jigsaw puzzle where none of the jigs came from the same box (ok, they only came from four or five boxes, it shouldn’t be that hard for me, admittedly) and that nonexistent narrative I was trying to build distracted me from the thematic stuff you were doing, or at least that I think you were doing. I think this is an interesting avenue for you to explore, though, lots of potential, and I’d be very interested to see what you come up with in subsequent experiments. (I hope none of this came across as insulting or dismissive. It wasn’t intended that way)
A true fan of the Trauma-man. It's a shame we can't openly critique something without fear of misunderstanding our allegiance. For me, I just miss Leo's voice over as he walks me through the video's thesis. Th video still gets a thumbs up and view, as Implicitly Pretentious continues to help me appreciate these damn super hero cartoons from my younger days.

Having the pathos of Michael Ansara voicing him is the cherry on top of the great effort of the writers and animators.
Freeze really needs his own movie there's so much of him that can be explored and i think hes one of the best tragic villans out there
I understand why Bruce in Beyond couldn't trust Freeze. He's tried so many times with him.
Came for the title, stayed for the video essay about patterns.
While I personally prefer the normal kind of video easy, this does get the point across very well. Great job 👍
I really like this. Keep doing what you feel is creatively right, i'll always support honest art.
Sometimes, the beauty of the art speaks for itself.
The name of this video is what I need rn
This might be one of your best videos yet, very excited to possibly see more videos like this!
Depression, nihilism, the sureness he has that he's beyond saving... I think that if everybody had powers, there would be a lot of Mr Freeze-es walking around.
Then there will be people who will stop them
@@1eyeddevil929 I feel like 'more people are motivated and happy than depressed and anxious' is a bad bet.
@@vfxninja5503 Falling into despair is easier than rising above it
@@1eyeddevil929 I'm glad you agree with my point.
Didn’t expect to be crying over Mr. Freeze today. Great video. I think the experiment is a success!
I'd say this was a successful experiment. Great work! Mr Freeze has always been a wonderful not-quite-villain. Anti-villain?
It worked. I cried. Thanks.
BTAS and Batman Sub Zero really introduced Mr Freeze to me as a younger self
As interesting as this format is, I really value hearing your commentary
The Batman series is chocked filled with tragedy…cyclical and returning.
this is one of my favourite videos ever. i come back to it every month or so when i remember it. so so good
I like this format, and would be happy to see more.
I think you should make more of these
I think the use of the subtitles can be managed better, but Mr. Freeze's story is perfect for this format of video and it's all the more tear-jerking to watch it unfold like this than it is to listen to someone talk about why it's sad. That being said, I think traditional essays will prolly get more views, but I'm still going to watch these either way if they're over a topic like this
The best part about Dr Freeze is bruce could have prevented or ended this with money.
Really liked the new video style, the video essays are more my thing but this was really enjoyable to watch and I will definitely watch more videos like this if it’s what you want to make!
Im a pretty big guy and this really made me feel something. Great work. iv always loved this character but your video really sells his suffering.
Mr Freeze is a very sad character. When I was a kid he was always a favorite of mine. He's a perfectly well meaning guy, he just went to the extreme because he wanted to save his terminally ill wife.
Holy smokes that was beautiful
This format works pretty well, but I would like a smaller and simpler video with your voiced opinion as an addendum
It is just straight crazy how you manage to make my water works on things I overlook on these films
Such a good damn job bro ❤️
This editing is fantastic. Would love more vids in this style
To a normal villain to the man we now know.
holy.... this was truly a beutiful watch def as a mr. freeze fan.
This was really good! I loved it!
Wow! Successful experiment! This was amazing! I had no idea what I was clicking on when this popped up on my recommended page, but I'm so glad I clicked it. This was so neat and I hope more like this is to come in the future
Man im suprised Mr Freeze hasn’t gone insane from all the years he spent as a head since he had nothing to do
Apparently he has a rich internal life.
Very interesting and well done experiment. You've done Victor justice. Feel better soon!
Still hoping this type of story for him get adapted for one of the Reeves films. Id love this tragic force of nature to have a purpose beyond just what Batman and Robin offered--as much as I love that wack-ass roller coaster
Beyond also showed us a Bane who's body was withered from decades of Venom usage. A joker who was to proud to let his legacy die.
There is a reason that he is one of my top favorites of Batman's rogues gallery.
It was a fine Tribute video. But I think the reason we all watch your videos is for your beautiful voice. And the way you say “World”. Like… Woud. I love it. I can’t do the accent. You’re the best.
Man, in 12 minutes you somehow concocted something to tug all of my heartstrings
Best head I’ve ever seen fr
As an experiment this was fantastic. I look forward to whichever characters you choose to do this with in the future.
Wow, seeing it all side by side like this is very impactful.
Victor.
Tragic, complex yet human and relatable character.
While I prefer to hear your analysis, this was a beautiful video telling the story of a truly tragic character.
This is excellent. I could watch this style of video all day.
Dammit I'm busy, I'll watch this once I'm free! 😱
I’ve been seeing so much of mr freeze lately…which I love cause he’s my second favorite villain. But I can’t help feel we are manifesting mrfreeze into The Batman part II… AND IVE NEVER BEEN SO EXCITED.
Great edit. I think this new format works!
Very cool experiment, expanding your moving cold open edits
Freeze deserved a better ending than what he got in Batman beyond.
The shot of him walking away with the polar bears after realizing his wife survived should have been where his story ended.
Everything after that was just misery.
Hope ya feel better, the video was still a good watch with very good editing and music choice. 👍
Heartbreakingly beautiful
The Mister Freeze feels do hit hard.
I like this style of video. I’d like to see you do more of it.
Heart of ice is still one of the best episodes out of all series.
at the end batman's villains are just in pain as him who took the other road. freeze is one of them
