i have questions: are you combining two nucs, each with their own queen, and letting them fight it out? i've read that some cut slits into the newspaper but you didn't do this. could you not do an inner cover without the notch so they don't start to build. i may have missed this but did the weaker hive on top have a queen?
Hi There. The nucs that you saw were a single colony housed in two 5-frame nuc boxes. There was one queen in that double nuc. Since I want my stronger colony on the bottom, I simply placed the 10 frame colony from the two 5 frame boxes together into a single 10 frame hive body. Then a single sheet of newspaper above that. There is no need to cut any slits in the paper. Directly over the paper I put the hive body with the weak and queenless colony.
I think I have to do this I have a small cut out hive that's not progressing with a big queen (got them a few days ago) and a very small swarm that I can't find a queen and seems to be avoiding some eggs I put in with them 2 days ago.
Thanks for sharing these lessons.
Always a pleasure. This time was a tad more painful than most haha
