Emma. You always do great videos. But both my partner and I find it really difficult to keep up with the speed of your speech (and we are southerners). Is there any chance you can speak a little slower or breathe between sentences?
Hi, Emma! This cruise looked awesome. And I loved the dress that you wore to dinner but I cannot find it on the shopping list. Please, could you provide a link? Thank you in advance! ❤
This looks like the perfect cruise. I’m not a big fan of parties or loud entertainment. Doing puzzles while the snow is coming down and being able to see so many ports seems ideal.
Absolutely this. Now I know this is actually a thing, cruising doesn't seem so daunting at all. Would much rather be doing this than spending a week on a floating nightclub with unlimited cookies and hangovers...
there is something very relaxing about playing a board game or doing a puzzle while enjoying a hot cup of coffee/tea while watching the snow come down. I have a cabin that is only accessible by snow mobile in the winter and there is nothing as relaxing as heading up for a few days in the dead of winter and disconnecting from most of the outside world reading or watching a movie while it blizzards outside with aa wood burning fireplace heating the cabin.
Friend, For us who grew up with these ships, we don't define it as a "cruise". It's more a way of transportation, dating back to the days when roads on the coast of (northern) Norway were few and far between, the days when people used boats instead of cars. The coastal steamer route as we know it started in 1893, covering ports from Trondheim to Tromsø and was essential for the communities along the coast, carrying passengers and freight. So for us, it was/is like taking a bus or an airplane is for others. During the years that has passed, the route has been extended, down to Bergen and up to Kirkenes and calls on 34 ports. Even today its role is very much the same, carrying passengers and cargo from A to B. But it's also called "the world's most beautiful sea journey", and I totally agree! A round trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back takes 11 days and is a memory for life! It's a time to relax, without the stress of other cruises to always be participating in events and activities, it's a time of "calm experiences" so to speak. Go in summer and you'll see the midnight sun, go in winter and experience the snow blowing horizontally. :D But take that trip, you will be glad you did! Bon voyage! :)
Made my day, Emma! Last time I was in Oslo, some guy I met on the train found out I was a sailor (as he turned out to be as well). He gave me the combination for the lock on his sailboat in the harbor to use as a base. I stayed for weeks. I was asked to speak in a high school there about life in the US. They paid me to do it and it was like I'd died and gone to a snowy heaven. I love your posts, but more than that I love your attitude and patience with others. Thanks!
Emma, you are so cute. "Little machines that clear the snow" those are fairly standard for many Canadian homes, we call them snowblowers. We use them to clear our driveway and sidewalks. Also, there are many here (not me) who do wear shorts in -10C and even -20C. We get to -30 C with no problem. The problem is the wind, the wind creates windchill which makes it feel like -40 or -50C. Great video!
😂 I was coming to make the same comment. I'm from Northeast Wisconsin and using a snowblower is such regular thing, but it's so charming to see her reaction.
So adorable to hear your amazement at the snow throwers that the crew used to clear the decks...many of us northern US residents have one of them sitting in our garages every winter to clear our drives and sidewalks, so it's as common as a lawn mower! So cool to consider someone may have seen one for the first time as an adult!
Yep, in the Midwest of the US, if you have a sizable driveway it’s imperative to have a snow blower. It’ll not only save your back, but for many older adults it could help prevent a heart attack. There is a reason we call the heavier, slushy snow “heart attack snow”.
"They had these little machines that would fire the snow overboard" 🤣 They're called snowblowers and here in Canada pretty much every house house has one (unless they live in Vancouver or Victoria British Columbia).
I am also here to make this comment 😂😂😂 her having to describe and not have a name for a snowblower caught me off guard 😅 they are pretty essential here in Michigan.
I love cruising and Emma's perspective. Her hard work and sharing is truly amazing.. Having recently learned I have late stage cancer at 58yo and loving cruising, the knowledge on this channel has never seemed more important! Thanks again for all the craft and effort you put into the channel. Appreciated to the stars!
This is amazing. In my weirdness, I watch endless cruise review videos, but always think “this isn’t for me” I love this. There’s a sense of adventure, travelling with the locals. I’ll do this one day, Thanks Emma
We spent 9 nights on Havila, round trip from Trondheim to Kirkenes in September. Much more hospitable weather. Highly recommend going through the Lofoten islands. Breathtaking!
The coastal route of Norway is a very traditional one. Norway has the second longest coastline in the world, so ships were naturally huge (and still is) for Norway. The competitor that used to have a monopoly on the routes actually still even use a ship from the 50ies for some cruises, I think mostly to Svalbard.
This is now my favorite video of yours, dethroning the other ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. I live on an island in the US and am quite used to taking the ferry. I think that's why I find cruising fascinating, despite never having been on a cruise. Ferries are our lifeline here, fun to see a way to get from here to there elevated via cruising.
I did the whole trip in the beginning of May 2016, Bergen to Kirkenes and back. One of my best vacations ever 😊. In 12 days we had just one afternoon with some drizzle, the rest was blue skies. Hardly any wind, so smooth sailing. And temperatures on land were in average 10 degrees Celsius.
This looks amazing! I love the more understated and practical feel of the ship, while still being very aesthetically pleasing and comfortable looking. And these views are all BREATHTAKING.
I love that route - I've done it 8 times on Hurtigruten: North, South and Round Trip, right up across the Northern coast to Kirkenes. I even met my wife on of of them! Havila does look a lot more plush than Hurtigruten who have hopefully upped their game since they have had competition. As you say, the scenery is the entertainment. Great video, thanks.
It is extremely funny to see what Emma thinks is a huge amount of snow, and how she describes a snowblower after never needing to learn the word for it. Even growing up near NYC, we had one starting over 50 years ago. Having lived in New England for 48 years, I can't imagine not having one. But this year, in New Hampshire, I got mine ready to use this winter, and have not used it. We only had a snowfall approaching a foot deep one time this winter, and it was fluffy enough to just push with a big shovel. The ground is free of snow now, while some years at this time, there might still be snow 2 feet deep in the yard and snowbanks 5 feet high next to the road. Very interesting ship and cruise. In a way, very expensive per day for what it is. But in another way, maybe worth it for the different experience and the lack of crowds. Judging from how happy Emma looked, evaluating only objective measures of value for money, would be a mistake. What is the proper price for making someone happy and positively radiant?
First of all, to make someone happy and positively radiant is PRICELESS! :) Second, ,I grew up on the island shown 3 seconds into the video, (the first port Emma sees after Tromsø) and I recall winters there in the 70s with over 11' (yes, eleven feet!) of snow. The communities would only shut down when the plowtrucks couldn't handle the snow anymore and the roads were closed, and that was a rare occasion.
That's great emma. I didn't realise that Havila did cruise ships! I used to work for Havila but on plat form supply vessels in the North Sea. Knowing the Norwegians, I imagine the vessel was very nice.
Emma, you felt warmer at the same temperature on the ferry because of less humidity in the air...that's why I find sunny but much colder days in Canada more comfortable ( with a duvet coat) than the humid cold and dreary skies that freeze you to the bone...unfortunately , that's what we are getting more and more often now. Love your videos and this one was so different and very fun.... Cheers!
Ok, now, this is a cruise I'd do.... this looks fantastic, and just imagine doing this in the summer too. A working ferry visiting many locations where it's a lifeline to those living there and those wanting to travel around Norway. Very similar to some of our excellent ferries off Scotland where they are multi-stops and are the form of connective travel.
A cruise that's quite different and loved those views at the start of the vlog!!. I wish the Med ferries offered this quality (Jadrolinija take note) she looks like a most beautiful, comfortable ship. Finally, loved your choice of boots with the frock you chose for dinner, no open toes for you in that weather.
For taking pictures in cold like this, your best bet is to get gloves/mittens where you can remove the mitten part or remove the tips of certain fingers while the rest of your hand and fingers are still covered and warm.
This type of cruise is absolutely on my bucket list - it just looks incredible! The fact there was a high avalanche warning cracks me up - I’m not convinced I’d have been brave enough to still board… The quality of this ship is SO much better than I expected from this type of ship - it looks amazing!
Ha ha, I did say this to David and he found it funny that I would think that the Avalanche would affect us at all. Apparently the ship doesn't go up in the mountains.. who knew!? Thanks lost and lots for watching!!
Great video. Very similar to the Hurtigruten one we did about 5 years ago, although that was an older ship. We went right at the start of January and it was amazing to see that amount of snow and that life just carried on, unlike it does in the UK after a couple of millimeters. You should have tried the hot-tubs, we did twice while in the Arctic circle, its amazing sitting there with snow falling on you watching the amazing views, only issue was having to get out of them onto the snow covered deck. Have another one booked for this winter with Hurtigruten doing Bergen - Kirkness - Bergen like we did last time. Did not know when we booked that there was a second company now doing the trip, so will compare them next time we go.
Emma: thank you so much for your informative and entertaining videos! We just booked this full 11 night cruise from Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen in November, 2024 + visits to Bergen, Oslo, and Sweden (to visit friends) - we cannot wait!
Every thing about this cruise is so cool. I'm gonna now look up schedules to see if you could just get off anywhere and get back on another one fairly soon. The food, the views.... great great fun.
Great video about a very interesting and fun cruise! I would take this cruise if I lived in the neighborhood. Thanks Emma for sharing your adventure with us.
I love your videos and it has really opened my eyes to try these types of cruises! I would absolutely love it. Being from Northern Michigan in the USA, I am used to cold weather as we frequently get -25 F in the winter. This would be right up my alley!!!! Thank you again for all the hard work you put into making these videos to share with us!!!!!
Hm, I thought there was something familiar with the first port pictures (3 secs into the video, and the first port you talk about after Tromsø), and behold! It's from Risøyhamn, Andøya, the island where I grew up! :) Yes, the trip from Bergen to Hammerfest is called the world's most beautiful sea journey, and I agree! Wether you sail in summer or winter, you will get memories for the rest of your life! At times violent seas in the winter, the midnight sun in the summer... I often traveled with what was then called Hurtigruten, the coastal steamer, with my mom when I was a kid, both during summer and winter, and the ships weren't as comfortable then as they are now. Many times during winter we had to brace ourselves in the bunk to prevent from falling out! But nevertheless, you could rely on the coastal steamer ships to always be on its way, and get you there. If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest you'd take a trip with "MS Nordstjernen" (North Star) around Svalbard. This ship was once a part of the coastal steamer fleet and I've travelled with her many times. And thank you very much for this video, it brought up fond memories from my childhood.
I’m so glad you had such a good time, I was a few days behind you but on a round-trip voyage! Now I can share your vid with friends and family to show them how great it was!
After massively enjoying the MS Maud Northern Lights cruise from 11 Nov to 26 Nov last year, it's fantastic seeing how much you look like you enjoyed coming back down the Norway coast on this cruise. Hugely enjoyed watching today Thank you for bringing all those happy smiles, fun with snow, lots of excellent information and a renewed urge to do that route again and get on the ships. :-)
I was meant to be going on the Northern Lights cruise on MS Maud in December (midwinter). Unfortunately, there was a freak wave in the North Sea when the ship was near Denmark (towards the end of its previous trip), which damaged the navigation systems, so our journey was cancelled.😢 Everyone on board was OK, though they had an unexpected visit to Bremen, where they were towed to after MS Maud was unable to continue to Tilbury. As I already had train tickets and a bed booked in London, I took an overnight bag & wandered through some of the Christmas lights. The following day I had a good walk around & visited an exhibition before leaving London late afternoon for home... making my cancelled holiday into a mini-break instead. Maybe this year if I'm lucky...
I have only been on a cruise once and that was with Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes including a visit to the North Cape. We did an excursion every day to see as much as possible. It was so cool! I like the fact that these ships aren’t that big as normal cruise ships are. And such an interesting history this route has.
Eeee I am SO excited to bring you this video, thank you for watching! What an incredible adventure this was. 🥰🥳

Same here in Vermont, and New York :)

Funny that you haven’t seen snow blowers before! Looks like a typical North American winter there, icicles and all. 😊
I'm 60 and never seen snow. We do have snow in Australia but I haven't made it anywhere cold enough yet. Hopefully one day.
What is a North American winter? I'd think winters differ quite a bit from for example Mexico City to Manitoba.
I really like the sound of this trip! Thank you for the video.

I’ve been looking forward to a video about this unique cruise. It didn’t disappoint! Thank you 😊
So interesting that you did this! You are good at living life to its fullest.
Beautiful “star” dress! Highly desired!
Loved the video - thank you 🌷
Every thing about this cruise is so cool. I'm gonna now look up schedules to see if you could just get off anywhere and get back on another one fairly soon. The food, the views.... great great fun.
I love you, your videos are so much fun to watch. So much learned from you. Thank you.
Thank you! 😁❤️
Great video about a very interesting and fun cruise! I would take this cruise if I lived in the neighborhood. Thanks Emma for sharing your adventure with us.
Woohoo! Thank you! 😁❤️
Great video Emma. What a beautiful ship and scenery. Norway is definitely on my list to visit. This would be an interesting option.
Hm, I thought there was something familiar with the first port pictures (3 secs into the video, and the first port you talk about after Tromsø), and behold! It's from Risøyhamn, Andøya, the island where I grew up! :)
Yes, the trip from Bergen to Hammerfest is called the world's most beautiful sea journey, and I agree!
The port where the snow angel was made (17 minutes in) is Brønnøysund in the Helgeland area, my neighbouring town.
I was born in NY, and we had snowblowers, but I have lived in Canarias for 30 yrs, and I am forever grateful for that!!! ☀️🏝️🌋
Here in Utah, I don't need a snowblower---I just tell one of my wives to shovel walkway before she walks off to 10th grade school class.
This cruise has been on my bucket list for some time and I have friends who have done it multiple times and still keep going back !
I’m so glad you had such a good time, I was a few days behind you but on a round-trip voyage! Now I can share your vid with friends and family to show them how great it was!
Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed! 😀👏🏼
Oh this is incredible! What a dream trip!
One of your best videos
Groovy episode. Love your star dress. I had a star T-shirt just like your dress that I purchased in the UK in 1970; very Mod of course.
Great video, thanks Emma!
Love the videos, Emma. This ship looks so nice. I'm glad we got to experience it with you.
What a great adventure. Thank you for sharing. Love your britishisms! 😅
After massively enjoying the MS Maud Northern Lights cruise from 11 Nov to 26 Nov last year, it's fantastic seeing how much you look like you enjoyed coming back down the Norway coast on this cruise. Hugely enjoyed watching today
Thank you for bringing all those happy smiles, fun with snow, lots of excellent information and a renewed urge to do that route again and get on the ships. :-)
I was meant to be going on the Northern Lights cruise on MS Maud in December (midwinter). Unfortunately, there was a freak wave in the North Sea when the ship was near Denmark (towards the end of its previous trip), which damaged the navigation systems, so our journey was cancelled.😢
Everyone on board was OK, though they had an unexpected visit to Bremen, where they were towed to after MS Maud was unable to continue to Tilbury.
The views wauw stunning. That was quite a cruise in the Snow 😅 lot of fun
Great video Emma 🥰
Wow 🤩 fascinating Emma, thank you!
Happy our fluff gave you a good snow angel. And, yes, we are very used to tourist bumbling aroung, snow or not.
Awesome views
I have only been on a cruise once and that was with Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes including a visit to the North Cape. We did an excursion every day to see as much as possible. It was so cool!
I like the fact that these ships aren’t that big as normal cruise ships are. And such an interesting history this route has.
Ema your amazing, on the one hand you are a real adventurous traveler but also your afraid the most mundane of things.
Thanks for the video. I'm thinking about taking this cruise.
Have a great time if you do, my agents are here to help too if you don't already have a great agent: emmacruises.com/book-a-cruise/ ! 🥳🥳
Wow, this looks like it was an amazing experience. The snow on the ship would blow our minds 😅
Great price, wonderful video & I love your star dress - too cute!!
That looks absolutely amazing! Someday I hope to enjoy a cruise like that. You are so lucky!!!
A beautiful video and review!! I’m a huge snow ⛄️ lover and this was just amazing to watch!
I think I would quite like to do this! The scenery is fabulous and there is something quite tempting about cruising in the snow.
Loved the Star dress, you always look so cute! And, as always, loved the video 😊
I will never cruise, but I love your videos - it’s the next best thing, including avoiding the sea sickness bags 😊
What a beautiful trip 😍
Sooo beautiful! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Definitely sounds like one for the more experienced cruiser.
Ahhh! This is one on my bucket list! Thank you for posting! 👏🏼👏🏼
