21 Port Stops in 4 Days: Cruising The Norwegian Coast

- Опубліковано 28 лют 2024
- I’ve just disembarked a cruise on a battery powered ship that visited 21 different ports in 4 days. The journey took us from Tromso up in the arctic circle all the way down to Bergen and I took this cruise in the middle of winter. I saw and did things on the trip that have to be seen to be believed, from the ports that we visited to the surprisingly luxurious ship and the food, I’ll show you it all.

Usually when you embark a cruise it’ll be lunchtime, maybe early afternoon. Our embarkation time was 11:45PM. I had a friend onboard who had already been on the ship for a week at this point and he had been sending me terrifying weather reports and footage of the ship travelling through rough seas and storms to come to pick me up. I was excited, but definitely a little nervous about getting onboard. I do get seasick and I don’t claim to know much about Norwegian weather but ‘high avalanche danger’ definitely didn’t seem good.
The ship that we were boarding was called the Havila Polaris and we walked through a deserted terminal and straight up the gangway to board. This felt like breaking every single cruise ship rule all at once. Normally you have to check in in the terminal, you have to go through security, they scan your bags, it usually takes a while but we walked up the walk way and we were in the ship. In the middle of the atrium.
We checked in at reception the same way as you would on a hotel on land and we were ready to start our cruise in under 5 minutes which was very exciting. To be honest I was very relieved that the ship really did turn up to pick us up at nearly midnight, I did double and triple check the paperwork I had to make sure I hadn’t misread it because it did seen different.
Some guests had already been onboard for a week at this point and some would only be on the ship for a couple of hours between ports, how they keep track of everybody coming and going I’ll never know but I did wonder how this would affect our cruise. It didn’t know if it would feel like a cruise at all.

The older I get, the more colder weather does not appeal to me, at all.
I waved to you and Hudson when you passed through Ålesund :)
My Britishism curiosity was "zeb-rah" because I was trying to figure out what a zebrah was until I saw the crosswalk and realized that it's the British version of my American pronunciation is "ZEE-bra".
Emma. You always do great videos. But both my partner and I find it really difficult to keep up with the speed of your speech (and we are southerners). Is there any chance you can speak a little slower or breathe between sentences?
Hi, Emma! This cruise looked awesome. And I loved the dress that you wore to dinner but I cannot find it on the shopping list. Please, could you provide a link? Thank you in advance! ❤
This looks like the perfect cruise. I’m not a big fan of parties or loud entertainment. Doing puzzles while the snow is coming down and being able to see so many ports seems ideal.
Absolutely this. Now I know this is actually a thing, cruising doesn't seem so daunting at all. Would much rather be doing this than spending a week on a floating nightclub with unlimited cookies and hangovers...
I want to try it too. The introvert’s dream cruise!
there is something very relaxing about playing a board game or doing a puzzle while enjoying a hot cup of coffee/tea while watching the snow come down. I have a cabin that is only accessible by snow mobile in the winter and there is nothing as relaxing as heading up for a few days in the dead of winter and disconnecting from most of the outside world reading or watching a movie while it blizzards outside with aa wood burning fireplace heating the cabin.
"They had these little machines that would fire the snow overboard" 🤣 They're called snowblowers and here in Canada pretty much every house house has one (unless they live in Vancouver or Victoria British Columbia).
I was gonna comment this! I made my husband listen to that line! I'm from MN, yep we have one!
Yep, here in Maryland everyone but us has one too. I like the physical work of shoveling the driveway and sidewalk.
I am also here to make this comment 😂😂😂 her having to describe and not have a name for a snowblower caught me off guard 😅 they are pretty essential here in Michigan.
I was just about to say something similar😂
It's cute how novel the concept is to people who don't live in places where it gets snowy😂😂
Same here in Vermont, and New York :)
So adorable to hear your amazement at the snow throwers that the crew used to clear the decks...many of us northern US residents have one of them sitting in our garages every winter to clear our drives and sidewalks, so it's as common as a lawn mower! So cool to consider someone may have seen one for the first time as an adult!
In the UK, we very rarely get enough snow to warrant that kind of thing lol, so it's fascinating to see
Yep, in the Midwest of the US, if you have a sizable driveway it’s imperative to have a snow blower. It’ll not only save your back, but for many older adults it could help prevent a heart attack. There is a reason we call the heavier, slushy snow “heart attack snow”.
You call it a snow thrower, not a snowblower?🇨🇦
Made my day, Emma! Last time I was in Oslo, some guy I met on the train found out I was a sailor (as he turned out to be as well). He gave me the combination for the lock on his sailboat in the harbor to use as a base. I stayed for weeks. I was asked to speak in a high school there about life in the US. They paid me to do it and it was like I'd died and gone to a snowy heaven. I love your posts, but more than that I love your attitude and patience with others. Thanks!
Oh wow, that's so cool! Thank you so much for your kind words. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
The people in Norway are lovely, it's such a safe place.
Can't believe more people didn't use the hot tub! A hot tub in winter is the absolute best -- and with that scenery surrounding you??
I love cruising and Emma's perspective. Her hard work and sharing is truly amazing.. Having recently learned I have late stage cancer at 58yo and loving cruising, the knowledge on this channel has never seemed more important! Thanks again for all the craft and effort you put into the channel. Appreciated to the stars!
Emma, you are so cute. "Little machines that clear the snow" those are fairly standard for many Canadian homes, we call them snowblowers. We use them to clear our driveway and sidewalks. Also, there are many here (not me) who do wear shorts in -10C and even -20C. We get to -30 C with no problem. The problem is the wind, the wind creates windchill which makes it feel like -40 or -50C. Great video!
😂 I was coming to make the same comment. I'm from Northeast Wisconsin and using a snowblower is such regular thing, but it's so charming to see her reaction.
We spent 9 nights on Havila, round trip from Trondheim to Kirkenes in September. Much more hospitable weather. Highly recommend going through the Lofoten islands. Breathtaking!
15:17 the irony of using a gas-powered snowblower on an electric battery ship 🤣🤣🤣
Ever used an electric snowblower though?
@@alexshaw8167 I have. You can get good electric snowblowers, but the endurance are limited. They also cost significantly more than your gas powered equivalent.
wonder how many Congolese children were used to mine the lithium needed for this boat's battery
@@thejamnasium6447 LFP. No Cobalt i used. Cobslt is used for cleaning up Diesel, so if you want to save the children in congo, go all electric
I did the whole trip in the beginning of May 2016, Bergen to Kirkenes and back. One of my best vacations ever 😊. In 12 days we had just one afternoon with some drizzle, the rest was blue skies. Hardly any wind, so smooth sailing. And temperatures on land were in average 10 degrees Celsius.
Brought back wonderful memories of our December BKB Hurtigruten journey, magical coastline, like sailing through a Christmas card
YES!!! That's exactly it!!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
What a beautiful way to put the feeling of this video into words.
That looks lovely- beautiful ship, very chilled, and coffee and cinnamon buns with a view!
Also, YES, Team Two Duvets! No fighting with duvet-hogs! 😆
Haha!! Sooo true!!!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Thank you! A whole new idea for cruising opened in my mind. 😻
The coastal route of Norway is a very traditional one. Norway has the second longest coastline in the world, so ships were naturally huge (and still is) for Norway. The competitor that used to have a monopoly on the routes actually still even use a ship from the 50ies for some cruises, I think mostly to Svalbard.
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Ferry trips from Stockholm to Helsinki are similar- and the archipelagoes there is absolutely a make-believe world for lesser mortals like me, FYI.
Ah yes! Emma’s most famous words! “I’ve just disembarked”
Haha, I'd love that to be how I start every video because then I already have a few words down, makes it easier that looking at a blank piece of paper!! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
@@EmmaCruises lol Emma! Love your vids! I love cruising, I’m only 14 and I’ve been on 7, my dream job when I’m older is a Carnival Cruise Director!
That is amazing! Hopefully I can go on a ship one day where you are the cruise director! :D@@travelcaribbean2009
I’ve been looking forward to a video about this unique cruise. It didn’t disappoint! Thank you 😊
Such a unique trip filled with winters beauty!
Thanks Emma👍🏽
Ahhh! This is one on my bucket list! Thank you for posting! 👏🏼👏🏼
Definitely something I would have never thought about doing but now that I have seen you do it, it looks very very interesting and neat
Thanks so much, always fun to try something different! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Thanks Emma. Nice cruise. Haven’t cruised in that part of the world. Beautiful scenery. Thank you.
Wow Emma, that was awesome, made me cold looking at it! Thank you for sharing.
Funny that you haven’t seen snow blowers before! Looks like a typical North American winter there, icicles and all. 😊
I'm 60 and never seen snow. We do have snow in Australia but I haven't made it anywhere cold enough yet. Hopefully one day.
What is a North American winter? I'd think winters differ quite a bit from for example Mexico City to Manitoba.
I love your adventurous spirit!
Awesome! I think this looks like the perfect way to visit Norway! Bucket list for me for sure!
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Aww love seeing the Havila ships again. Gorgeous food!
Love the videos, Emma. This ship looks so nice. I'm glad we got to experience it with you.
Adding a winter Norway cruise to my bucket list!
On my bucket list. Thanks for sharing 🙏
Your videos are always so interesting. Well done and thank you!
Emma, I love how you mix it up in your videos...its not just ocean cruises that you do and that is so refreshing
You have a super power Emma. Cruising the World eating great food while being so fit. It's amazing!
Emma this was wonderful, it was like a real cruise! Love the winter travel. Stunning
Great ship! 🚢
The intro alone is INCREDIBLE!
Thanks so much! Appreciate it. I tried something a little different which always makes me nervous, but I like it so am glad you do too! :)
I love it too ❤
A beautiful video and review!! I’m a huge snow ⛄️ lover and this was just amazing to watch!
This looks amazing! I love the more understated and practical feel of the ship, while still being very aesthetically pleasing and comfortable looking. And these views are all BREATHTAKING.
This is definately a trip I'd like. Thanks for the insight
This is now my favorite video of yours, dethroning the other ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. I live on an island in the US and am quite used to taking the ferry. I think that's why I find cruising fascinating, despite never having been on a cruise. Ferries are our lifeline here, fun to see a way to get from here to there elevated via cruising.
So interesting that you did this! You are good at living life to its fullest.
Excellent Video as always. Never boring. Loved it. 😀
This cruise has been on my bucket list for some time and I have friends who have done it multiple times and still keep going back !
I love your videos and it has really opened my eyes to try these types of cruises! I would absolutely love it. Being from Northern Michigan in the USA, I am used to cold weather as we frequently get -25 F in the winter. This would be right up my alley!!!! Thank you again for all the hard work you put into making these videos to share with us!!!!!
thanks again Emma your video was just Breathtaking 👍⛄️
For someone who lives in the southwest desert of the US, this video was so fascinating!! Thanks for taking us along.
Thank you! I now have something else to add to my bucket list.
Ha ha, long list eh?! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
You always do a wonderful job, showing us your cruise adventures, Emma! Cheers!
You're so kind, it's much appreciated! Thank you! 😁❤️
I really like the sound of this trip! Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Looks so serene and peaceful. Magical views.
Really was! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Oh this is incredible! What a dream trip!
For taking pictures in cold like this, your best bet is to get gloves/mittens where you can remove the mitten part or remove the tips of certain fingers while the rest of your hand and fingers are still covered and warm.
Fantastic to relive our 3 days on Polaris in January from Trondheim to Tromsø.
The views wauw stunning. That was quite a cruise in the Snow 😅 lot of fun
Great video Emma 🥰
This video was sooo much fun to watch! I think I smiled through most of it. Thanks, Emma!
This is the best comment to read, thank you so so much!!
Wow 🤩 fascinating Emma, thank you!
YESSSSS!!!!! This one is so special!!! 😍😍🥰🥰🥲🥹💕❤️💕
That looks absolutely amazing! Someday I hope to enjoy a cruise like that. You are so lucky!!!
I just opened UA-cam and yelled “Yay! Emma uploaded a new video”. So excited to watch!
This looked like an AMAZING adventure!! I loved watching your video!
This video is amazing as always, good job Emma!
Thanks so much 🥹❤️
Your video reminded me of my Hurtigruten trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. What a beautiful country. Thanks for your wonderful video!
Ooo amazing! I'd like to try Hurtigruten too. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
@@EmmaCruises you should! And do seeing Bodø-Kirkenes in the summer would be fun.
Emma: thank you so much for your informative and entertaining videos! We just booked this full 11 night cruise from Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen in November, 2024 + visits to Bergen, Oslo, and Sweden (to visit friends) - we cannot wait!
Great video Emma. What a beautiful ship and scenery. Norway is definitely on my list to visit. This would be an interesting option.
Every thing about this cruise is so cool. I'm gonna now look up schedules to see if you could just get off anywhere and get back on another one fairly soon. The food, the views.... great great fun.
Best snow angel I’ve ever seen!
Ok, now, this is a cruise I'd do.... this looks fantastic, and just imagine doing this in the summer too. A working ferry visiting many locations where it's a lifeline to those living there and those wanting to travel around Norway. Very similar to some of our excellent ferries off Scotland where they are multi-stops and are the form of connective travel.
Great video about a very interesting and fun cruise! I would take this cruise if I lived in the neighborhood. Thanks Emma for sharing your adventure with us.
Woohoo! Thank you! 😁❤️
Oh WOW, what stunning scenery. Love this ❤
Sooooooo stunning. Thank you! 😁❤️
@@EmmaCruises and accessible too 👏
I'm disabled and use a mobility scooter. Are cruises usually accessible?
@@standup2982 Usually yes, new ships much more than older but anything in the last 20 years or go yep (ocean ships I mean). 😊
@@EmmaCruises thank you 😊 I became disabled three years ago at 51 after being completely able-bodied. Now I can only walk a few steps aided. Love your channel ❤
This looks amazing.
One of your best videos
I think I would quite like to do this! The scenery is fabulous and there is something quite tempting about cruising in the snow.
Yaay a new video! Thanks, Emma!!!
Woohoo! Thanks so much 🥹❤️
This is so awesome, can't wait for our Havila trip in April. 😁
Wow, this looks like it was an amazing experience. The snow on the ship would blow our minds 😅
Great price, wonderful video & I love your star dress - too cute!!
Loved the Star dress, you always look so cute! And, as always, loved the video 😊
Emma, you felt warmer at the same temperature on the ferry because of less humidity in the air...that's why I find sunny but much colder days in Canada more comfortable ( with a duvet coat) than the humid cold and dreary skies that freeze you to the bone...unfortunately , that's what we are getting more and more often now. Love your videos and this one was so different and very fun.... Cheers!
Excellent video Emma, that looked like a lot of fun🫶🏻
What a cool idea to take a ferry to see 🇳🇴.
Beautiful “star” dress! Highly desired!
Loved the video - thank you 🌷
I will never cruise, but I love your videos - it’s the next best thing, including avoiding the sea sickness bags 😊
What a beautiful trip 😍
Sooo beautiful! Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Ha nice to see Life in Norway, his northbound journey is definitely more treacherous..
Probably doing this next winter
Never clicked so fast on a video! Always looking forward to new videos! Yours are just the most realistic and best structured ones!
Thanks so much 🥹❤️
Groovy episode. Love your star dress. I had a star T-shirt just like your dress that I purchased in the UK in 1970; very Mod of course.
I took the Havila Polaris for a round voyage
I like it ,everything was clean and the food was good . Most of the crew were lovely.....
Awesome views
Watched David’s video before watching yours. But I did see Hudson in his room so guessed you might be on the ship too. This trip is now on our bucket list.
Great video.
Very similar to the Hurtigruten one we did about 5 years ago, although that was an older ship. We went right at the start of January and it was amazing to see that amount of snow and that life just carried on, unlike it does in the UK after a couple of millimeters. You should have tried the hot-tubs, we did twice while in the Arctic circle, its amazing sitting there with snow falling on you watching the amazing views, only issue was having to get out of them onto the snow covered deck. Have another one booked for this winter with Hurtigruten doing Bergen - Kirkness - Bergen like we did last time. Did not know when we booked that there was a second company now doing the trip, so will compare them next time we go.
That's great emma. I didn't realise that Havila did cruise ships! I used to work for Havila but on plat form supply vessels in the North Sea. Knowing the Norwegians, I imagine the vessel was very nice.
This looks absolutely amazing. I thought the Japanese ferries looked great and this looks the same or maybe even better. That colour scheme on the ship is so great looking and those views are outstanding.
I’m so glad you had such a good time, I was a few days behind you but on a round-trip voyage! Now I can share your vid with friends and family to show them how great it was!
Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed! 😀👏🏼
I am impressed at how much you managed to butcher "Hurtigruten" xD That was hilarious. Thank you.
Ema your amazing, on the one hand you are a real adventurous traveler but also your afraid the most mundane of things.
A cruise that's quite different and loved those views at the start of the vlog!!. I wish the Med ferries offered this quality (Jadrolinija take note) she looks like a most beautiful, comfortable ship. Finally, loved your choice of boots with the frock you chose for dinner, no open toes for you in that weather.
Happy our fluff gave you a good snow angel. And, yes, we are very used to tourist bumbling aroung, snow or not.
I was born in NY, and we had snowblowers, but I have lived in Canarias for 30 yrs, and I am forever grateful for that!!! ☀️🏝️🌋
Here in Utah, I don't need a snowblower---I just tell one of my wives to shovel walkway before she walks off to 10th grade school class.
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you! 😁❤️
What a fantastic trip!😃
Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
Now this I want to do. Looked incredible.
Do it, do it. Thanks for watching 😀👏🏼
I really enjoyed following along with you on your Norwegian winter cruise even though as a Canadian, I get 5 months of this weather each year. Where I live, almost all my neighbours have a personal snow thrower to clear the driveway.
