Hey guys, if anyone has any of their own advice please comment here. I’m going to pin this so that people can learn from each other. There’s a vast sea of knowledge here that we can all tap into and share!

Try those “shut your eyes and feel” solos as well as try something “written and purposeful”. Take the strengths from the one you’re good at and work on the weaknesses. Got to be self aware and honest

Ok heres a challenge. Make a backing track using every note in a scale. Dont use 1 4 5. Use all 7 chords. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. Then play over that track.

I put on those UA-cam "Beats for Studying" or Live Neo Soul Radio or Jazz Cafe Radio etc... Essentially they are neverending backing tracks that change every minute. I can do that for hours straight.

Love the new comedy edge coming out in this video, cuts through the "feel the notes through your soul" type of deep stuff nicely.

Give the “complete load of 💩 “ guy a raise 😂. Great advice Rob, if you could summarise to 3 key takeaways? Set mindset before playing, limitations create opportunities, don’t jam - create? Or anything else?
Applies to everyone in a band really. Ta, Dan (just in case anyone thinks you’re replying to your own vid).

Here’s how i programs drums; ive used the toontrack products for nearly a decade, and it has been a great help to learn drum programming. However, for tones, i cannot recommend Spectre Digital’s “extinction level event” drums higher. They are incredibly accurate, mix ready, and highly detailed drums. When it comes to programming, if looking at a blank midi section is intimidating, start with a midi drum file premade that fits close to your desired feel. Then, edit as needed. Also, think like a drummer- i dont mean show up late, unprepared, and missing cymbals, i mean, think about how every hit is a different velocity relevant to what’s being played. If you stick every note at 127 velocity, it will not sound real. Even if you’re using the grid, and dont prefer ‘humanizing’ the performance, using different velocities during busier parts of the drum performance can add a level of real authenticity…
And, if you’re starting from scratch, try this; do 8 bars- start with the kick only. Track 8 bars of your rhythm. Then, as you loop the playback, adjust the kick to your played rhythm part. Then add snare. Finally, add high hosts, and dont be afraid to experiment with open hats, foot clasps, or different parts of the ride, china or splash cymbals. Finally, for this 8 bars, delete any hits that clash- make sure you’re playing like a human being- take out any hats that interfere with cymbal his. And cymbals or hats that interfere with fills.
In the end, it is as much about thinking like a drummer when you write midi as it is haven’t excellent drum sounds- its tedious, but its worth the effort!

Hey Rob, those are some great ideas I like it when somebody can put into words what I'm thinking musically! You definitely hit the mark. What a great drum beat I don't know that I've ever jammed to one like that I mean I've dreamed to strange drum beats just not sure if I remember this one?😊 Really good stuff really good ideas and learning techniques. Haven't gotten to Spotify yet but I'm all over the UA-cam and Facebook algorithms!!!!!!!!!💯

The most profound thing a guitar tutor said to me, and a comment that has been forged into my brain ever since, is:
''As a musician, you have control over two things. Note value, of which there are twelve notes, and note duration which ranges from zero to infinity. Timing is everything, that IS phrasing.''
I guess what he was getting at was that, it's not so much what you play, it's how you put your personal being into what you play, and how your personality, deep down, interprets the music from your brain, through your heart and soul, and finally to your fingers.
I think we've all had that moment when you are jamming to a great backing track, you play a lick or phrase that surprises even yourself, and you think '' where on Earth did that come from?'' I'd say it comes from the heart, via the soul. I don't even do drugs, and I'm sounding like Neil from The Young Ones. Hands up who would like some lentil casserole? 👩‍🦰
