Longer sustain is great, it's always easier to make sustain shorter by varying your technique. But almost impossible to do that with strings that have short sustain. You should definitely try them out if you have the chance!
Magnus Sjöquist Yes but on the other hand, you can also blend the hights out of the thunder guts, but you can't push them on the "Reds" if they are not there..
jimmy ernst Thanks Jimmy! Yes, I think my ubass playing on the acoustic/electric models are almost 85 % thumb playing based. If you vary the touch and add some thumb muting there are a lot of different sounds you can get only from your thumb!
You also sing well my freind the singing on top of bass sound really good.. I want em for my fretted Ubass, living in Norway they are not easy to find..... Have you tested them on a fretted Ubass?
Hi! It's a blend of a condenser mic infront of the ubass and a DI out of the Aguilar Tonehammer head! (There are text captions, in the lower third of the screen, that tell how I recorded the different parts of the video!)
It's a fretwrap (by gruvgear.com) It helps to dampen open strings. I use it in different playing situations. Explained a bit in this video ua-cam.com/video/XG0GyIqGKbc/v-deo.html
They can feel a bit sticky but I don't think they're as sticky as the Thunder gut. At the moment I use the original Pahoehoe on one of my acoustic-electric ubasses so it was a while since I played the Thunder Reds. But I will uses them on a ubass soon again because I really love their sound!
+KZ550 I've had the Thunder Reds on my fretted acoustic U-Bass since Feb. 2014 and I still have the original rosewood nut on it. I have not had any problems with the rosewood nut but the slicker graph-tech nut might help when tuning.
+Mathieu It depends on what you like. The stock strings have a really nice round deep tone and the Thunder reds some more attack/definition… Read some of my thoughts here: playubass.com/reviews-and-tests/
Just convinced me to get a Kala U Bass. Def gonna get these strings
THe Reds really have more sustain I like that!

nice thumb picking..I found I naturally went to this style of playing as soon as I got my u-bass

PS.. I found putting talcum powder on my fingers helps me slide easier on the white thunderguts
jimmy ernst You mean they don’t make red talc?!! 🤣
great comparison. thank you Magnus
Thanks Lou!

Awesome shirt!!
Yes, thanks! Kala should make a new batch of these!
Is this just the acoustic sound or is it actually plugged into an amp?

What is that thing wrapped around the nut ?

What model u-bass?
This is an early spruce top model w/o built in pre-amp (ca 2010)
Aquila Thunder get my vote ;)
Thunderguts? Thunder reds? Or both?
Magnus Sjöquist i meant those thunder reds ;3
What in the hell is happening with this restring job, looks you just strapped them on best as you could lmao
What do you mean?
What loop garget are you using?
It's a TC Electronic Ditto looper!
Is it true that they still get sticky like the thunder gut?

On their website it says that due to the thinner e and a strings, that you need a new nut, is that true?

+jburtonca Same here! Works ok with the same nut!
thanks guys1
are the reds better than the stock strings? thanks
