For someone who struggling doing head down equalization, i found method that work for me and couples of my friends. 1.Duck dive as usual 2.Swallowing saliva just a little bit and you should heard something like "glek" sounds 3.Then right after that pinch your nose and equalize Hope it works.
Every now and again I meet people like this. I know one guy here who is like you. From what I know, this can basically work down to a certain depth, but it gets harder and harder as the pressure increases - so some people go 'hands free' up to say, 10 meters, then switch to another equalization method. Even valsalva has a failing point of roughly 30 meters. Experiment in the water and see how it goes.
Hey man. I've heard of the luftwaffe thing.. never tried. I do know, and use the Frenzel myself. The only reason I wanted to cover vasalva in the video is because its aimed at people very very new to freediving, and I felt its pretty easy.. once you can vasalva easy, then learning the frenzel as a next step should be easy too. I may to a video on frenzel in the future.
mate this info could save someones life one day, personally i recken you should make a video to sell in diving shops all around australia even if it only goes for half an hour it doesnt matter. i've told my mates about your info an even gone to the points of recording them on my phone to show mates as that way the are having it explained to them in the correct way. i have been diving for just over 8 years now an i still learnt new methods from watching your vids now i can do 3.20 min dives
After every 2 or 3 feet pushing down the pool wall, equalize and SLOWLY increase the pressure unless you feel the pressure relieved in both ears (normally one ear will equalize before the other, just keep slowly increased the pressure). Never suddenly blow hard. starting easy and slowly increasing the pressure until you successfully equalize is the key. you may need to find some creative way to allow yourself to descend in the pool with your head up.. pushing down the pool wall is what i did.
omg. thaaaaaank you maaan! i suffer like 2-3 weeks cos with my right ear cant equalization. now i sit next to the monitor and just enjoy the feeling! thank you, tomorrow i can continue learn freediving! :D
I just want to thank you so much for this video!! I've only started diving and could not equalise my right ear at all! Moving my jaw whilst using this method worked perfectly, much appreciated!!!
Freedivers can generally return to the surface without any worry of decompression sickness. Since we are not actively breathing compressed air underwater, we don't have this risk which is associated with scuba diving. The exception is competition divers who are going to extreme depths. Decompression sickness can affect them, Herbert Nitsch is a popular example of a diver who got sick while attempting an insane record attempt beyond 200 meters.
Sorry for not replying sooner. 6 meters is pretty shallow. Generally when im diving without a wetsuit, ill float up from 10meters. Spearfishers generally have the same problem as you, they want to be able to lie on the bottom without floating up. Just add 1kg weight, 1 at a time until you reach neutral at 6 meters. 1kg might be enough. But remember when you start diving deeper, you'll want to stop using the weights if your not wearing a wetsuit.
Thanks for the tip and knowledge about the physical aspect of it. I always tend to understand issues better when I know what is physically wrong/causing the issue. I love swimming and would really want to get into casual free diving, but I was always "scared off" because I had this exact problem of not being able to go below 2-3 meters and couldn't equalize at all, like it was just hurting when I tried it. Last summer I went scuba diving with my dad for the first time ever, and I think I did this accidentally because we went down to 7 meters and only had issues with equalizing for a few moments. I'm really glad to know exactly what went right and how to do it consistently, just tried what you said and it worked brilliantly, that's otherwise something I can't really do not even when I am not in the water. Thanks man! :)
True, they do because the fish in shallow water and have to wait for the fish without struggeling. I prefer FRC, it makes the surface intervalls more comfortable. Greetz!
Normally one ear will clear first.. your good ear. Alot of of us have a 'bad ear' my left ear has issues. When the first your equalises, dont stop, continue to gently, but firmly increasing the pressure while wiggling your jaw until the other ear equalizes.
My Eustachian Eubes were collapsed and my ears were always in pain when I surfaced or even when I touched my ears at the right spot. A MD showed me this method to open up the Eustachian Tubes. I am pain free and have no problems equalizing since Take a deep breath hold it. While holding your breath pinch your nose then swallow. You feel and hear the pop of your Eustachian Tubes opening up.
Hi Rioxka. Well this video just demonstates a very basic method to get started equalizing. Luckily there are a few methods. You could use the same method, and completely leave out the jaw movement part. jaw movement is not essential, it just helps. Once your equalizing easily, you probably wont move your jaw at all. There is also the 'Frenzel" method which is a move advanced method. Its easy with a bit of practice though. I don't have a video on frenzel yet, but I will in the future.
yeah frustration. but at least now you can already equalize on the plane and car riding uphill, so it means you can equalize. I guess plenty of training will help, I hope so! Good luck to both of us!
Twice I've had burst blood vessels in my sinuses from spearfishing...once it happened I couldn't go below 1m without pain in my head and nose...started using a sinus rinse throughout the summer months and I've never had this prob again... I also find equalising a lot easier since I started using them... Even in winter months I now use them every other day...
typical man. Alot of us have this problem. Keep going, stretch your jaw, wiggle jaw from side to side, yawn, etc - then try again. After the first ear goes, you can still increase the pressure and wiggle jaw until the other ear equalizes. Anyway, practice over the next few days (it took me a few weeks to master)
thank you, it was helpful ;) valsava manuever is great if you can do it quickly, but if its done slowly it can make you feel dezzy. have you tried herman frenzel "luftwaffe technique" ?? i've seen a really great video explaining it, but it still hard to do.
Thank you for your tips! I always have the problem when i dive, I try to blow everytime but it failed, and cause my ears felt uncomfortable... Furthermore, i use the way swallow to equalise it also no work for me...
Hello! do you have a video about buoyancy and weights? i just started free diving with only rashguards and boardshorts as my attire since we are doing it in tropical waters. my problem right now is that when i stop about 6 meters to take pictures, i usually float upwards. how much weight do you think we should place? to achieve neutral buoyancy. we are just doing recreational free dives. 10meters or less. Love your vids and more power! from the Philippines.
LOL, I would settle with that if I haven't successfully move up from less than 1 minute breathe hold to my current personal best of a little over 4 minutes right now. but since I prove myself wrong for that, I do believe God made us to learn and overcome the trouble we face ;)
Weight? Depends on the depth of the dive and wetsuit thickness. No wetsuit - no weight. 20 meters depth, 3mm wetsuit, maybe 2 kg's. You need to weight yourself to your according to these factors.... assuming you are diving to 20m, for safety, you should aim to be neurally buoyant at 10 meters - so you need to figure out how much weight you need personally to achieve that.
trying to equalize this way has become difficult since i've developed trans-mandibular joint disorder which makes sideways movement of the jaw very painful.
Really like this video! I have a little problem though. I was about 10m deep today and i'm not used to the ocean yet. However, i tried to equalize and it worked for my ears but i kept feeling this huge presure on my forehead? Any toughts what i'm doing wrong?
You are right. I remember trying my technique while diving. It does get difficult but it still works. Have you ever tried to kiss someone underwater? That's the worst experience ever. Hollywood makes the most ridiculous things seem appealing.
hello my friend!! i've been watching your vids very cool stuff. the question that i have is the following. My ears with every equalization that i do they get blocked so every time i need to clear them by swallowing. What do you think? Thanks in advance !
Hey chad its hard to say. I i think your probably failed to equalize. If its convenient, ask the doc or clinic just to take a look in your ear, tell you if there is any blood. Though I think your ear will heal by itself, but just monitor closely. Next time you go to the pool - try this - Go down to the bottom of the pool feet first, with your head up. You can try and do this by pushing down the side of the pool wall. (continued..in next comment)
Great videos! Had one question. I've never had problems equalizing both ears before but just recently, around april this year, only my right ear equalizes. This problem has lasted from april till now. Most times even when I'm out of water I cant equalize my left ear. When I do equalize my left its due to forcefully doing the vasalva (out of water of course). In water I just dont want to take the risk of forcefully doing the vaslva. Any suggestions or is it something I have to see the doctor for?
Forehead pressure. That's something called sinus squeeze. Everyone gets it now and again. I would blow your nose, make sure you get any mucus out of your sinus. Generally if you try dive again in a few days it should be gone by itself. We all get this sometimes.
sounds faily normal. i think i have some days like this. Just stay out the water a couple days, then when ur sinus are back to normal dive again. can take awhile for your sinuses to adjust to diving.
Yeah - this is something called mask squeeze. The increase water pressure is causing the mask to suck tighter onto your face. You'll feel the mask getting tighter adn tigher with depth. You need to equalize your mask - you do that be exhaling a small amount of air through your nose into your mask to compensate for the increasing water pressure. This is what dive masks have a connected nose piece . Its impossible to equalize your mask in swimming goggles or anything without a nose peice.
sir I have a question.. can i dive in to a more deeper without a hood. or anything that can I insert in to my ears, and just to use that kind of method or just equalizing my ear. to prevent the pressures?
Hello man, first of all thanks for the video and the tips. I tried freediving once in sea, but my problem was that the valsalva equalization (and that was the only technique I knew) was not really working for me. I really tried to do it as frequently as possible, every fucking meter. Now I watched you video and followed every step and tip you made, but I'm still only able to equalize only my right ear with the valsalva. By the way, what do you think of the Toynbee equalization (nosepinch then swallow)? If I try that, I can feel air in both of my ears, even though that feeling is lighter, than in my right ear when doing valsalva.
I have a question do I stop blowing until I feel the fullness in both ears or do I keep blowing even after I feel the fullness? Also is this a technique that many people have trouble with and others get it immediately ? Because I went snorkeling at some Florida springs a week ago and my ears would hurt when I would try to touch the bottom . Someone explained the equalization to me and I did it first try I could touch the bottom with no problem because my ears no longer hurt. So do some get it quick others not?
Equalizing on the way back to the surface happens automatically. :) I haven't been diving for long and I am not sure if there is any condition where this doesn't happen automatically but If you feel like this doesn't work for you there is a way to do this easily: Pinch your nose and swallow. yesterday at depths of 40ft i developed a massive pressure build up in my sinuses and ears. i attempted to blow all the mucous out of the sinus, and just kept going. after the dive, i noticed the pressure was getting worse, and i slowly started to lose a bit of hearing in both ears accompanied by a pressure buildup in the forehead, sinus and ears. when i equalize out of water now, it seems like the ears open up, then close again. can you please give me any tips on this,

Is is strange that I can do this without pinching my nose and blowing? I always have been, I don’t know how to explain it but I would assume it’s muscle control I can click my ears and when I do it’s like air comes out of them and they are equalized, I have no reason to make this up.
Been having trouble equalizing I just rough it out I picked up a new hobby in spearfishing been having pain in my sinus and jaw...tryed this method and the pain went away instantly...btw my left nostril would bleed and I noticed pain in my left jaw hinge...any info on that?
Today I was at the pool at 14 feet and I tried this so I pinched my nose and blew out of it and I think I blew too hard because I was blowing then all of a sudden it felt like my right ear just exploded and water was getting into it it felt. When I surfaced my right ear was hurting bad. Please explain what I did wrong please
Sometimes when i dive and i go down pretty fast my eyes are feeling like they are going to explode. My eyes also start to cry.. Do you know what this can be?
For diving deep into the swimming pool, what's the best method? I see all these advanced techniques, but swimming pool doesn't go that deep. Normal valsalva is sufficient and fail-safe in most cases?
my jaw cracked (i hear the pop of the jaw) but my ears don't pop :( I have trouble equalizing even to 5m pool, so I wonder if I can never freedive in the ocean. Have never freedive in ocean yet. I has just took AIDA2 pool. do you think i can ever go to the ocean?
when i mean it could save someones life is by them not having the right info or method an have a shallow water black out. I honnstly would like to see a put together video of breath up methods, equalization methods and what ever else you want to throw in to help ppl with there diving, you would make a killing by selling the video but its obvious your not in it for the coin so please make a video an have it in all fishing/diving stores around australia so ppl have the right info cheers
+sten if your ears get sore, stop doing it for a couple of days and try again later. It's definitely not great for your ears, but once you master it, there wont be a problem anymore.
For someone who struggling doing head down equalization, i found method that work for me and couples of my friends.

Good advice. Thanks. I'm just starting and have exactly these issues ;(
learn Frenzel equalization and practice it "dry" a lot ;-)
this was extremely helpful

its not common, but occasionally i do meet people who are also like this. consider yourself extremely lucky!
could be 'swimmers ear', search on google. I get it all the time.

so when free diving is there a certain reight that you have to rise to the surface? i know when scuba diving you can get sick if you rise too fast
for me the best thing that helps is yawning, it works 97% of the time for me, sometimes even just swallowing helps for me.
You are right. I remember trying my technique while diving. It does get difficult but it still works. Have you ever tried to kiss someone underwater? That's the worst experience ever. Hollywood makes the most ridiculous things seem appealing.

what about on the way up? my ears always hurt on the way up
try swallowing your spit?
Thats what i do when going up mountains when driving
Maybe it will work
As some says here! Try dry swallow in your ascent!
you suppose to ascent without equalization! If ears hurts - go to doctor, something is wrong

Is it okay to practice anytime
So when u try to equalize ur preassure do u blow the air into ur ears till the pop or just until they feel full of air?
my god that really works
Forehead pressure. That's something called sinus squeeze. Everyone gets it now and again. I would blow your nose, make sure you get any mucus out of your sinus. Generally if you try dive again in a few days it should be gone by itself. We all get this sometimes.

Do you also need to equalize when you go up?
Hello man, first of all thanks for the video and the tips. I tried freediving once in sea, but my problem was that the valsalva equalization (and that was the only technique I knew) was not really working for me. I really tried to do it as frequently as possible, every fucking meter. Now I watched you video and followed every step and tip you made, but I'm still only able to equalize only my right ear with the valsalva. So you have to equalize to dive deep. Do you have to do anything when swimming back to the surface to reverse the equalization? Serious question.
Equalizing on the way back to the surface happens automatically. :)
I haven't been diving for long and I am not sure if there is any condition where this doesn't happen automatically but If you feel like this doesn't work for you there is a way to do this easily: Pinch your nose and swallow. That lowers the pressure in your ears.
no. doing that would damage your ears. The air needs to escape as it expands as you go up - if your still forcing air into your ears - you'd damage them.
10 meters, 3mm wetsuit......... maybe 3kg's or 4 kg's?

No valsalva... I somehow just know how to do this. No wiggling of my jaw, no pinching of the nose, nothing. I can just force open some sort of canal somewhere in my inner ear on both sides and this equalizes my ears. It is the same effect as Valsalva. Is it just me?
How do I no when I have equilized my ears do they feel weird or do they start making noises or pop
ok and how do I know when my ears are fully equalized? and every 2-3 feet pinch my nose and blow slightly?
A problem that I had with this is that when I did it in a pool, it didn't work properly and really hurt my ears. Did I do something wrong?
i live in colorado, usa. not that it matters but.I swim in a 12 feet pool at home and I what to be able to hold my breath longer then anyone eles any helpful tips.
cant really describe it but you will definetly know when it happens
Is is strange that I can do this without pinching my nose and blowing? I always have been, I don’t know how to explain it but I would assume it’s muscle control I can click my ears and when I do it’s like air comes out of them and they are equalized, I have no reason to make this up.
i have a question im only 12 and very interested in your free diving but what dose it do when you =ize your ears
Did it help clear both ears?
Been having trouble equalizing I just rough it out I picked up a new hobby in spearfishing been having pain in my sinus and jaw...tryed this method and the pain went away instantly...btw my left nostril would bleed and I noticed pain in my left jaw hinge...any info on that?
When I pinch my nose and go down i feel a slight pressure going outwards of my ears. Is that a good practice equalize for starters?
Please help me. I can only be able to equalize my right ear. As for my left ear, i can feel the air going in but it just never "pop". :(
Today I was at the pool at 14 feet and I tried this so I pinched my nose and blew out of it and I think I blew too hard because I was blowing then all of a sudden it felt like my right ear just exploded and water was getting into it it felt. When I surfaced my right ear was hurting bad. Please explain what I did wrong please
Sometimes when i dive and i go down pretty fast my eyes are feeling like they are going to explode. My eyes also start to cry.. Do you know what this can be?
What about on the way up? My ears always hurt on the way up...how fast should I ascend - any breaks on the way up? Do I have to equalize again?
you don't need to equalize on your way up ;-)

For diving deep into the swimming pool, what's the best method? I see all these advanced techniques, but swimming pool doesn't go that deep. Normal valsalva is sufficient and fail-safe in most cases?
Also I did it at 14 feet when I did it.
Is it normal to hear squishy watery sounds in your ears if you can't equalize on a dive? I think I may have a perforated eardrum...
when i pack 5 times on a full breath it feels really unconfortable
my jaw cracked (i hear the pop of the jaw) but my ears don't pop :( I have trouble equalizing even to 5m pool, so I wonder if I can never freedive in the ocean. Have never freedive in ocean yet. I has just took AIDA2 pool. do you think i can ever go to the ocean?
when i mean it could save someones life is by them not having the right info or method an have a shallow water black out. I honnstly would like to see a put together video of breath up methods, equalization methods and what ever else you want to throw in to help ppl with there diving, you would make a killing by selling the video but its obvious your not in it for the coin so please make a video an have it in all fishing/diving stores around australia so ppl have the right info cheers
if anyone solve head down equalization problem with this way please say
wait a few days, see how it goes
I can only equalize my ears swallowing is that a problem ?
as long as you can equalize successfully , nothing much else matters
what should i do if only one of my ears equalizes ?
Yes I have the same problem.
keep blowing slowly increasing pressure till the other ear equalizes
it kind of sounds like a crackling noise and it fills like your ears are filled
I can't equalize my left ear :(
哈哈, 謝謝
is it bad for your ears?
+sten if your ears get sore, stop doing it for a couple of days and try again later. It's definitely not great for your ears, but once you master it, there wont be a problem anymore.
take a break man. Try again tomorrow.
