Luigi Mangione, 26, has listed one of his favorite quotes on Goodreads as: “It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society,” a saying from religious philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti. His Goodreads profile also includes self-help books about health and the body, such as Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery.
Mangione’s social media accounts feature an image of an X-ray showing a spine reinforced with surgical implants. That X-ray indicates the person underwent spinal fusion surgery, a procedure involving screws and rods to join two segments of vertebrae together, typically to alleviate severe pain.
At the time of Mangione’s arrest, he was carrying a handwritten manifesto. He expressed willingness to take responsibility for the murder of UnitedHealth’s CEO in the 262-word piece. The manifesto argued that while the market value of UnitedHealth has risen, Americans’ life expectancy has not increased.
