We can’t really talk about Pattaya without deep diving into its wildest side. For many, this part of Thailand is a haven for sex and drugs. Cannabis, at the very least. You have to explore the famous walking street here to know what I’m saying. Not that they don’t have these things in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand, but I think Pattaya is on another level.
We are now on our sixth episode, and for the first part of this vlog, join us as we tour the sinful streets of this city, known for being a party destination.
NIGHTLIFE WITHIN THE THE SINFUL STREET OF PATTAYA
Pattaya’s beauty is being regarded as wild, and its non-conformity to norms makes it an exciting city to be in. I’ve seen a lot of wild streets in Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, the early 2000 Malate in Manila, and Makati’s Kalayaan Avenue area these days, but they seem short in comparison to how ‘wild’ the inner side of Pattaya is. The one thing that set Pattaya different, I guess, is its being unapologetic, more vulgar even.
Whether you are engaging on the acts the city offers or not, it’s good to see this side of Pattaya as it opens your eyes to the other face of the world especially if you come from a very conservative country. Pattaya can only be expensive if you are to indulge in activities it offers. For the onlookers like us, a bottle of beer or two wouldn’t be too much of a splurge.
The Summer Sun
With the scorching heat of the May 2024’s summer sun, we all wanted to go to the beach and dip in the waters whenever possible. Yet, in most cases than not, we are contented with the view of the beach - especially if you are from Asia, where a fairer skin is considered as wealth. Direct exposure to the sun is seen as a mortal sin for our skin-color conscious citizens.
For western travelers who might want to experience more of Thailand outside the metropolis Bangkok, the easiest choice for a beach destination is Pattaya. Compared to the far-flung island of Phuket, Pattaya is only a two-hour drive away, southeast of Bangkok. This beautiful beach city is one of the most popular destinations in Thailand, and is home to most foreigners who love the beach, naughty parties, and yes, some of the wildest night life experiences Thailand offers.
What I like about Pattaya is this: no matter how wild you’ve spent the night before, you’d be consoled by its calming beauty at sunrise; and no matter how tiring the entire day would be, you will always be treated to a beautiful sunset before dusk. I’ve visited Pattaya for a few times already, and it doesn’t fail to offer wonderful experiences. Pattaya is home to pretty cafes, hilltop restaurants, and beachfront bars, among others.
Kohlarn Island
The mainland Pattaya is a heaven itself. But if you want to level up the experience, make sure to visit the nearby paradise - Koh Larn island. Koh Larn is just 30 to 45 minutes by boat from the mainland. Fare ranges from 150 baht to 250 baht, depending on your choice of boats: there is speed boat on the pricier side, and the common boat, which is definitely cheaper. It took me a few trips to Pattaya before deciding to visit Koh Larn and I regretted not visiting the island sooner. I hope the clips I took while on the island would give its beauty, justice. We only had a day trip for this visit but I’m definitely coming back to stay longer.
Personal Notes
At first, I wondered why Pattaya is a crowd favorite. By experiencing the city for several times now, I realized there’s no reason one wouldn’t love this city. While loving a place really depends on one’s taste and preference, Pattaya could easily enchants anyone. To summarize, it offers a variety of things to its visitors.
I liked Pattaya the first time I set foot on here. The island experience made me love this side of Thailand even more. I believe you’d love Pattaya as well. Here’s hoping you would neither love it here for sex nor drugs but simply because s/he is Pattaya.
