Nestled along the serene shores of the Gulf of Thailand, Hua Hin is a place where time slows down, allowing the whispers of the ocean to weave through the bustling markets and tranquil temples. Here, golden sands stretch into infinity, kissed by the first light of dawn, and the air is filled with the gentle hum of life. In Hua Hin, every corner tells a story, from the vibrant hues of street vendors' stalls to the timeless elegance of its historic architecture. This is a town where the past and present dance together, inviting you to pause, breathe, and rediscover the simple joys of life and friendship.
Upon an invitation of Boots, a longtime-friend who I haven’t seen for almost 20 years, I found myself riding a bus to Hua Hin, 199 kilometers southwest of Bangkok.
If you are going for a commute, Hua Hin could be reached after a convenient three-hour bus ride and a 150-baht ticket from Bangkok South Terminal.
In terms of energy and allure, Hua Hin sits somewhere between Pattaya and Rayong. Pattaya is like your wild, beautiful friend who embraces life with a free spirit. She’s always a head-turner, flaunting her charm. Rayong, on the other hand, is your quiet, pretty friend who enjoys sipping coffee while reading her favorite book. Hua Hin is a blend of both - sometimes calm, sometimes lively, depending on how you engage with her. My stay in Hua Hin was quite brief, which isn’t enough time to truly know a city but I think I got lucky being here.
A Very Special Trip
Reconnecting with one of my closest friends from high school made me excited to travel down south. While on the road, I couldn’t help but reminisce about our younger years, when we were all wild and free, and unsure of the future. A reconnection is such a strong force that led me to this trip. Couple it with anticipation of another coastal beauty, I can only be excited. Of course, these island people decided to meet at the beach, now in Hua Hin.
Of Friendship and Memories
There’s no better backdrop for a reunion but Hua Hin’s beach, especially at sunset.
Living in the metro for so long, these memories of home and childhood pull at my heartstrings. This trip and nonstop conversation with Boots pinched an inner portion of the soul. Indeed, it warms the heart to have a friend who reminds you of your humble beginnings and acknowledge the hard work you put in to experience a better version of life.
During my stay, Boots and her family graciously guided me through a series of enchanting experiences.
Our escapades include a trek to the top of Hua Hin’s scenic mountains, where the entire city of Hua Hin unfurled beneath us like a vivid tapestry. They led me to secret beaches in Hua Hin known only to locals, where the soft, golden sands and gentle waves created a perfect haven of tranquility.
Our evenings were spent wandering through the vibrant night markets, including the bustling Cicada Market and the lively Hua Hin Night Market. Each market buzzed with life, offering a kaleidoscope of colors, enticing aromas, and a symphony of sounds. These experiences, rich with local culture and poetic beauty, made my time in Hua Hin unforgettable.
If not for the heat and my laziness, we would have explored even more. But it’s good to leave some places unvisited, giving me a reason to return.
Chaam Beach, Resorts
A 30-minute drive northeast, at the other end of Hua Hin beach, lies the connecting beach of Chaam. On my last day, I stayed at the beautiful Hua Hin Mida De Sea Hotel to enjoy the beach on top of this hotel’s amenities, as well as those of the adjacent Ace of Hua Hin resort.
It’s been a habit of mine to spend the last day in each city relaxing: swimming in the pool or the beach, indulging in a spa or sauna, and enjoying a good massage are my favorite things to do. Hua Hin allowed me to do all that.
If this episode was a movie, ‘Hua Hin’ would be about friendships tested by time, with the beaches, lakes with floating temples, and scenic mountains as the backdrop.
