CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Admiral James Greer (James Earl Jones) reminds Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) of his sworn oath to stand up for the people of the United States.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the third film based on Tom Clancy's high-tech espionage potboilers starring CIA deputy director Jack Ryan. Harrison Ford, returning to the Ryan role after his first go-round in 1992's Patriot Games, is assigned to a delicate anti-drug investigation after a close friend of the President (a Reaganesque Donald Moffat) is murdered by a Colombian drug cartel. When Ryan discovers that the President's wealthy friend was in league with the cartel, the President's devious national security adviser (Harris Yulin) and an ambitious CIA deputy director (Henry Czerny) send a secret paramilitary force into Colombia to wipe out the drug lords. The force is captured and then abandoned by the President's lackeys. It falls to Ryan to enter Colombia and rescue them, aided only by a renegade operative named Clark (Willem Dafoe), with both his life and career on the line.

At least James Earl Jones is still alive in 2024. He is 92.
He looks pretty good for 90!
@@vitamc1213 He is not 90 in this clip here.
But simply being alive at 90 means someone 'looks good'.

"Your word is who you are."
This video cut off the last second which shows Greer laughing at Ryan’s mention of the magazines. It was a beautiful lighthearted way to end such a somber scene
Just going to have to buy the movie then. 😉👍🇺🇸
If only our civil servants took their oaths as seriously as this scene portrays.
A lot of them do. They just don't get to be SENIOR civil servants very often.

No hard feelings over that whole torture business on Bespin, I see.
Vader giving advice to Solo after the rebellion has gone morally bancrupt and turned to the dark side. Solo immediately knew he had to go to the former dark lord for help and advice. Vader dying after almost having been killed by his son Luke the bastard :)
@@LorenHelgeson Haha. I think that all that torture & being frozen in carbonite business was just Vader letting Han know that he was a protective father & that if Han wanted to date his daughter (Leia), he better get with the program by not playing so hard to get & saying "I know" to her whenever she says "I luv you".
Yeah I always think to myself "Wow! That's Han & Darth Vader" whenever I watch this film. There's also one more Star Wars connection. Samuel Jackson (Mace Windu) was in Patriot Games.

Still memorable after all these years
To tell the truth- Admiral James Greer is aspiring, dignified, meticulous, instructive, rational, accountable, level-headed, jovial, ambitious, modest, efficient, selfless, generous, righteous, encouraging, even-tempered and respectful.
Clear and Present Danger may just be an action film without a lot of deep meaning, but this scene has stayed with me since the first time I saw the movie in the theater.
"Your word is who you are."
Helko
I don't think it's just a dumb action film at all. There is a great deal of complexity to the plot, a lot of pieces moving all at once. There's also a lot moral ambiguity. It's difficult to pin down just who exactly is the villain. That's what makes Ryan's hero-journey interesting. As an audience we want to see what he'll do, because it's hard to know the right path.

That would be like trying to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Wow, thanks very much for posting this, movieclips!!! One of my favorite alltime quotes from the movies is in this heart-wrenching scene. Greer/JEJ tells Jack Ryan/H. Ford: "Your word is who you are ......" There's a lesson for every American. And ESPECIALLY all politicians.
May the force be with you Admiral Greer aka Darth Vader aka Anakin Skywalker.
james earl jones your theater is always a joy too watch.beyond reason all I've ever seen was truth in your eyes.thank u hard too believe you where darth Vader but really cool.
Darth Vader and Han Solo meeting each other again
Han Solo visiting Darth Vader in hospital.
James Earl Jones could use that voice and tell you to Rob a Bank and you'd run out and do it..
“What else you got there?”
“Brought you some new magazines”
I think Greer was talking about helping Ryan with any other issues he had before he passed away, rather than the magazines Ryan brought as a gift. Greer smiled at the misunderstanding briefly but knew his time was very limited and wasn’t going to be able to read them. Ryan knew in that moment what he meant and knew Greer not looking too enthused meant he was going to go much sooner than he thought.
Forgot all about this movie...

This was such a great movie. Action thrillers just aren't what they used to be and it's sad.

Great acting, great movie!
I love this scene.
"How dare YOU, Mr. President!"
Grey hats washed clean by remembering their oath.
This is one of my favourite James Earl Jones scenes ever.
Good old father in law, son in law talk, circa Star Wars.
Nobody cares about that boring space opera
James Earl Jones!! The only actor that tied Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and this movie together. I felt Alec Baldwin's Jack Ryan was way different from Harrison Ford's portrayal. Jones' Admiral Greer was consistent.
Demarius Henderson: Alec Baldwin's portrayal of Jack Ryan was cerebral as you would expect of an analyst, but his character, having been the sole survivor of a helicopter crash while an Annapolis cadet, sets the stage of his being somewhat a 'maverick' after his USMC commission. This opens the character to the Harrison Ford portrayal of Ryan later. For whatever reason Baldwin didn't return to the role, it would have been interesting to see his portrayal! By the way, I rather enjoyed Ben Affleck's portrayal of Ryan in "The Sum of All Fears".
@@pathfinder44ltd I always thought that Baldwin lost interest in the role of Jack Ryan but he actually wanted to do Patriot Games. But apparently he got replaced when the producers realized they could get a bigger star like Ford to take his place. I personally thought they were both great in the role.
But Admiral Greer wasn't in Hunt For Red October. 😉
Uhhh... YES he WAS. You need to rewatch the movie. Admiral Greer most certainly was a character in the hHunt for Red October.
@@aaronschutte7160 The wink is because he opened his ID and told the weapons officer that he was never there.
What Greer told Ryan from his death bed in the novel makes this scene look like a comedy.
“Jack, you know, when you lay here like this, you know what you think about? You think about all the things you’d like another chance at, all the mistakes, all the people you might have treated better, and you thank God that it wasn’t worse. Jack, you will never regret honesty, even if it hurts people. When they made you a Marine lieutenant you swore an oath before God. I understand why we do that now. It’s a help, not a threat. It’s something to remind you how important words are. Ideas are important. Principles are important. Words are important. Your word is the most important of all. Your word is who you are."
Way more powerful than what James Earl Jones said in the movie.
I like when Harrison Ford says, “I’m afraid if I dig deeper, I won’t like what I find.” You can tell that he’s really trying to keep his composure while talking to James Earl Jones, but it’s clear that what he’s found out is tearing him apart.
What I always found poignant about Jack's comment here is that it shows his humanness...he's appalled by what he's found and aghast by what it means on many levels, including for himself. I felt like Jack was saying without coming out and saying it was that a part of him DIDN'T want to dig any deeper, and Greer was gently reminding him that, because of the oath he took, he doesn't have that luxury - not if he's a man of integrity.
A similarly poignant (though not so powerful) scene is the one later in the Ryans' living room, where Jack and his wife are sitting together in silence. The implication is that Jack, wanting to prepare Cathy for the storm that's about to break over them, just got done telling her everything, then he plaintively asks, "Got any idea how I'm gonna get out of this mess?" I always loved that she goes at once to comfort him but answers honestly, "Absolutely none."
PEOPLE HAVE TO STOP SCEEWING ME OVER!
Wonderful performance by both players in this clip. JEJ takes portraying gravitas and honour to a new level and the make up is so effective. Harrison Ford overplays his vulnerability a tad, in my opinion, throughout this and several other movies but in this scene it works perfectly. Great movie; must watch more with JEJ.
In what way he overplays his vulnerability?
@@Shazam961
If you don’t see it, that’s fine. It’s my perception that someone with the character’s background too often shows a slightly overly emotional and vulnerable persona. It’s something he also shows in Indiana Jones.
I disagree with that observation.

Republican Senators need to watch this scene.
That's one very narrow minded way of interpreting these scene. The correct response should've been: Every single politician, regardless of political party; as well as every single government official in the United States government, needs to watch this scene.
What the "Republican Senators" do today, the Democrat Senators will do tomorrow. You'd do well to put your own ideological partisanship aside and remember that. We live in a country who's two party system is little more than an illusion. The Republicans aren't the only ones who serve on behalf of the American people. The other party does too, and the other party despises them just as much. Political expediency is all they care about. And that's why the single most universally supported issue among our citizens, congressional term limits, will never and I mean NEVER come to fruition.
