- Pulling The E92 335I N54: BLOWN Motor What Happened?
Today was a good day. Managed to do the leak down test on the 17t n54 motor. However the surprise was how easy it was to get the engine out!!!! Woot woot, gonna be boosting again shortly!

the build reminds me of phil from driftworks just fixing my rack conversion on my e46 m3 six months later it has a ground up build lol i hope your going to have a good look at your new turbos to see how they have faired have you thought about a performance exhaust for the new motor
Well comparing this to a driftworks build..... damn, thats probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. EVER!!! haha. Phil is an absolute legend, i can only imagine his disgust in my desire to use the cheaper options, i feel like Phil is all about doing things the best way possible. Where i am more about the best way i can afford... which is normally the cheapest way........but hey you gotta start somewhere. Definitely want to see how the the 17ts have aged. They havent done many miles, but what they did was pretty much at 25 or 27psi, so they didnt really get a chance to bed in. Yes, have also thought about exhausts. It's a tough one, as the N54 sounds a bit strange with straight through pipes and twins. I love the sound of a single. Then again this is supposed to be my daily, so i dont want it too loud. Its got a miltek on it at the moment, which is supposed to flow quite well, however the thing is so quiet its crazy. I want to try removing the resonators on this system first and seeing what it sounds like. Then maybe the back boxes.
@@ZeroTo60Tube You do have a spare engine now that you could build, like proper build, your way 🧐
i was lucky when i bought my salvage e90 335i coupe it had a brand new cobb exhaust from the turbos back and a tune as well 80k on the speedo and massive brakes and rotors i am guessing m3 brake upgrade it is very snappy when i rev it and to my suppries not that load as for the turbos i will see if they are stock when i pull the engine in a couple of weeks i would have done it this weekend but bathurst and beers this weekend @@ZeroTo60Tube
That M3 V10 is a great build just taken too long to follow every ep but think its almost done now.
This has quickly turned into one of my favorite channels if not my favorite channel on youtube. Always nice when someone is this down to earth and humble about what they do. Keep cracking on man, Such awesome content!
watching the control arm catching the subframe and you not noticing it is freaking me out....im still watching lol
Thanks dude, really appreciate the kind words. You guys being so nice in the comments section really make it a wicked thing to share with you all.
Jeeze you've got some balls. Pretty impressive to do that solo AND record it all yourself.
Well i figured at least if it went catastrophically wrong, i better get it on camera. haha
@@ZeroTo60Tube WITNESS ME!!! ^^
I 2nd that!!
My goodness.... Remove the whole engine on your own in a garage and without any special tools. Hats off man. Keep up the great content! Team N54!
Well i had a set of e torx..... they are pretty special haha.
Man that was hairy, make sure you have some people around in future.
I was stressing so bad when I saw that control arm hooked up, but you got it done so Bravo, mate.
Thanks dude. I was sweating to. I didnt say it in the video. But those tyres do have wheels in them. So should be fairly stable. Well when im not hooked on them with a control arm. haha.
@@ZeroTo60Tube It happens, mate.
It's a different perspective watching it after the fact, but this is how we learn.
I've watched most of your latest vids for a while, don't even own a BMW, but I've had a passion for them since I was 12, and Jags 🥰
I feel your stress taking on these big diy major engine repairs.
Much respect for 'having a go', bring us along and explaining all you are doing so well.
Thanks for the excellent content.
Thanks dude! I kinda feel like it's not too complicated. But also have a massive fear of missing something or damaging something without realising.
@@ZeroTo60Tube You lifting the car praying you haven't forgotten to disconnect an electrical connection or the car falling off the lift reminds me of the time I had to remove and rebuild the head on the family EF falcon. Young family and we couldn't afford either a new car or for someone else to fix it, so I had to do it myself.. All good in the end but super stressful turning that key that first time all back together. Cheers can't wait to here it running again.
Hats off to you going into the repair this hard! Loving the content mate, keep up the great work.
Thanks man, appreciate the support and kinds words.
With this channel i went from “Eh lemme click on this guy building a cheap n54 he found i’ll see what it’s about” when you had the car up on the lift installing the 17t’s to now being one of my favorite channels hands down. Loving the content! Keep pushing along with this car it’s gonna be awesome to see it running again
Thanks man, thats very kind, really appreciate the support.
You got some balls to do it alone mate .. hats off 👏 .. keep it UP
I was freaking out a little, as from where i push the button to lift the hoist up, i couldn't really see anything. So it was a bit back and forth, but the only thing that caught me out was the bloody steering column.
Use a plumb bob to put some marks on the floor of where the engine sits. Might make it easier to line back up.
Insanely informative content! Definitely one of the most detailed n54 channels with great videography and LIGHTING😅
Glad you think so!
I called it! Broken ringland! 550hp + causes the piston rings to expand too much. Good luck to ya.
Where’s Dave when you need him ? He’s a Lazzzzzzzy ........... Awesomeness at its finest GOOD EFFORT ;)
Hey I know it's just another comment but I for real enjoy seeing all the content you put out! I have a 2013 335is and I don't want to be taking it to the shop for really anything, and seeing you do all these different jobs at home and in such detail make your videos awesome. Keep up the good work man love what you're doing with the channel and you can only grow from here!
Dude it’s not just another comment. It’s brilliant seeing these, they are genuinely encouraging and really appreciated.

For a relatively small channel you guys are smashing the content
Trying our best. Who needs sleep anyway...... hehe
Just WOW! Well done!
Thanks man. I was a bit stressed for a while there, thinking i would have forgotten to undo something. But she went pretty smoothly.
The new engine looks so clean 😁😁😁
Good work mate helps us 335i owners out
Thanks for checking out the vids man, appreciate it.
U don't have to power the car up to move the gear selector. Lift the black cover up around the selector. To the right of the selector and forward of it . You will see a small red tab. Push the tab forward while selecting the gear you want as it's a manual over ride for the selector.
Absolutely loving the vids mate. These have inspired me to do the work on my own! Keep em coming!
Great to hear! Dude just take your time its not too bad. Mechanics are always under the pump and i think you do need skill when you are on a time frame. But a lot of the general stuff you can do yourself on these things. Any questions just give us a shout. I am legit learning as i go, but have the old e92 well covered with what i have done to it in the last 12 months.
Jezus Christ that was exciting and scary! It was a stressful watch, but in a good way. The is no horror movie that has me on the edge of my seat more that this video.
Amazing how you by yourself did this and even filmed it!
I lost it when you said: "now all I got to do now is swap every single bit".
Kind of an understatement but you sir, deserve a beer! I'm really impressed! Just wow!
haha, well i hope the stress ended up with some level of entertainment value haha. Yeah not looking forward to swapping everything over. The JB4, port injection and flex sensor really make my DME box a mess of wires. Not looking forward to sorting all that out. But i guess i better make a start on it.
im ganna join the membership program love your work!!!!
100% the best way to remove the engines on these thing. WE did the same thing with my BMW 135i M sport for engine change.
Have you got your new motor in and all running sweet yet?
@@ZeroTo60Tube Its a process. Old motor out and beginning to swap components over onto new engine.
Great job, man. Stay safe!
Wow, pumping out the content. Keep up the good work.
That's the plan! Should be a good week.
Good work mate, Great Content.
Much appreciated, it was actually under 4 hours to get the motor out, which i thought was pretty good for the first attempt.
4 hours is fantastic! Looking forward to more episodes :)
@@ZeroTo60Tube 4 hours to get the motor out! 😲
That's seriously impressive 👍
Lets not miss the fact it took me 1 hour just to get it on the hoist...... those time-lapses really do wonders. haha
Quite an achievement in one day mate, well done. I guess we are all used to seeing another bolt which needs disconnecting when working on these that it must have been weird to have it out so quickly 🤔.
Hopefully the rest of the week works out for you man. Oh, and that paint correction still looks the goods.
Super impressive doing that solo👏🏻 you’re definitely getting to know your N54! Already looking forward to the swap over. Putting those inlets and turbos on will be a breeze!👍🏻
Yeah that is one bonus, should be much easier to fit the turbos.
Yeah, this is awesome. Great job doing that yourself, definitely a two man job!
Loving the channel man, one of the few I watch were I don't feel the need to skip through or end early! Looking forward to seeing this rip again soon!
Hopefully Oli will have his back this week too with some 19t's making all the noises!
Much appreciated! And yes looking forward to seeing what oli thinks of the 19t's.
I have been watching this since day 1. I am loving the content. Thank you!!! Can’t wait to see how she runs.
Thanks for watching! Also really looking forward to seeing how she goes.
The joys of having a lift! Great freaking job.
Yes! Thank you! Was a lot easier than when we pulled the e90 motor on the dirt out the front, thats for sure.
Awesome video!! Great work, not an easy one to do alone. It was so funny at 15:20 '' I think we all clear'' with the control arm under the subframe. To your defense, it was a lot more easy for us then for you to see it. I will remember to take a look a those control arms when my n54 blow up. Have a good one!
Hahah, yeah, i was looking straight at it and couldn't see it was stuck. lol Thanks for the kinds words dude. Appreciate it.
Man, when you dropped that engine, I was getting sweaty hands lol
I was glad it went down rather smoothly. Hope the new engine is playing ball when you put it back together. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind listing the steps to drop the engine and put it back in? Could come in handy for people that have never done this before =)
Yes definitely. I was sort of learning as i go when i did this, but as it goes back in i will talk in specific detail about everything that needs to be undone. Its really not too bad. I think the worst part is the engine harness and most of that is because of all the extra stuff i have in the dme box.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Thanks a bunch mate. I'm looking forward to it =)
Great job 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great work! I have taken my engine out on my own before. After I had it forged.. It was sitting in my garage for 6 months until I had time off work to put it back together. Not easy taking the engine out I did it once but I wouldn’t want to do it again?? Watching you it seems like it’s regular! Keep it up i’m sure It will be back together before we know it!! Thanks to time lapse!!
Considering how complicated BMW made some things on the N54, actually taking the engine out didn't seem to bad. Im sure i'll be doing it again sooner or later. But hopefully the forged engine will have some life in it.
Putting it back in is going to be like the old saying, a square peg in a round hole , good luck with that , awesome vid , but I never wanna do this to mine, 😁👍
Great job! The logistics were a PITA - I was worried with you and it's not even my engine! LOL
So Funny I have those same house speakers! The small ones in your shop! LOL
haha did you buy them on market place because it just seemed like too good of a deal and then never really use them?
Should build some wheel caster things. Just need the right casters.
Well, well........ we used to have some. But i may have bent them trying to get the e90 parts car off the trailer... whoops.
Built happ tough... hell yeah man hooking in big time looking forward to seeing this thing back on the bitumen again... 😁🤘
You and me both!
crazy work you have done! keep it up
Thanks, will do!
Scary stuff, looking good though
well done man, great job
Thanks a lot! It felt like a big milestone in getting this car back on the road today.
AWESOME JOB!!!
Nice work. Looking forwards to seeking it running again!
Good progress!
Just for your awareness, don’t pulse the hoist like that unless you wait 2 seconds between duty cycles. It’s very damaging to the electromotor and causes premature wear and overheating. It should have a label on the side of it saying that aswell. Or it should be written in the operation manual. Goodluck on the swap none the less!!
Just re watched this regarding your original and replacement engine in the 335. We removed the oil pan from my failed N55 and it had spun the number 4 big end. Bearing tabs were missing and the caps were burnt black. A bit of an internet search reveals many bottom end failures (N54 and N55) occur on the number 4 cylinder. Not sure if there is anything in it but something to to think about... i do not know if it was oil starvation, or detonation or boost (running map 2 on the JB4). Sitting in the back of my mind is that we had the rear of the car on ramps (quite steep angle) and ran the car for a some time on these ramps. Engine knock started within 15 km on the first drive. Never heard of this before but it is a BMW so who knows... Also of note is the actual size of the rod bearings - they are not terribly large...
Interesting info that's for sure. Thanks for the update.
Keep it going bro
You don't need to power the car for neutral, just disconnect the shifter cable and move the shifter arm on the trans manually.
Guess who worked that out, when he looked at the linkage on the gearbox haha
Bit sketchy balancing it on a wheel. You had me sweaty watching it too :) Glad shes out all safe.
Thanks dude, they are actually 22 inch rims, so they are massive. I was going to use some pallets, but the 2 i had both fell to pieces. Luckily it all turned out ok.
Great job again 👏
Thank you, appreciate the kind words.
Walk the motor back in, take the front brace off (lights, etc)
Much quicker using an engine lift
Out of curiosity what makes that quicker than dropping the car down on to the subframe? To be fair i still need to lift the engine off of the subframe from this point.
I put the subframe back in first, I removed bonnet (hood) and walked the motor in.
Took 35 min max, turbos+ DP were on.
The nice thing was you have a lot of space to work.
I did have 2 guys helping.
Check out my build on Instagram dax.60.roll
It worked for me, good luck
Fair play...
Very good job mate 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Seeing that control arm get stuck before you noticed it was stressing me out, lol.
haha, i'm when i'm editing it, i'm like i can't believe i didn't notice that sooner. I was legit looking straight at it.
Nice work, just wondering if you had removed the ground cable as I didn't notice you mentioning it.
I did, i did. However, if im honest i only noticed it when i was disconnecting the fuel line.
Mate, I see Total Tools have a special on GoJacks right now. $230 for a pair (or 145 each). These may be very handy with the problems you have.
Definitely would have helped get it in the hoist. That said normally we drive in so it’s not a problem. I might still check em out
Nice work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Id like to add some advice but I have a XI model and my steering racks on the opposite side so I don't know how much different things are. I took the whole front end of my car off and left the power steering rack and the transmission in the car.🤷🏾♂️
That is the how i removed the e90 engine from the parts car as it wasnt on a lift. And to be fair, i dont think there was much in it timewise. But this way is a little quicker.
my 335 has no.1 misfire and i replaced coil and plugs. start to thinking could be carbon built up on valve now
Well a compression test would definitely help you work out if it is something mechanical. Let us know what you find out.
"It's gonna boss it no problem!"😂😂😂
RESPECT!
Thanks dude! Piece of cake.... i wasn't stressed at all......... :|
Who dislikes your videos??? Is it a spurned ex... jealous of youtube fame😂😂, looking forward to seeing it roll racing again soon 👍🏴
Whoever it is, they are consistent..... you have to give them that haha
Was expecting to see a broken piston or other carnage, darn disappointed. :)
Once the e90 engine is in the car and the e92 engine is on the stand, we will get to see the carnage. Some people break the ringlands and they stay in place, so curious how bad this one is. Im hoping i caught it early and there isnt much bore damage.
Are you dead sure the motors are the same? I would be so tempted to get a set of pistons in your current engine, but I would definately want to know what died first!
They should be the same. Both from auto 2007 build models. I still want to put a stock motor through some testing with the 17ts. Just to get a better idea on what is safe to run. Most people are running stock motors, so i kinda wanna get the data first, i feel a lot of people have bought the 17t/19t after seeing our vids and i don't want anyone else popping their engines. But once that is worked out i will be going on to a built motor, for sure.
Awesome that's all I can say
Thanks dude.
Keep up good work we watching you how long did take to remove the engine
Just under 4 hours.
I'm sweating like a..... 😂 🤣 My Mrs hates when I use that one
It was all i could think of that might not offend the youtube algorithm.... haha
I subbed brotha , my N54 started smoking the same but 2x worse blue smoke coming out oil burning , checked my oil cap inside no air was leaking out but there was smoke coming out of the hole and there was also milky oil. Could it be the turbos or did my whole engine just say bye bye ? Thank you 👌
Thanks for the sub. Really appreciate it. If yours has the rough idle its probably engine not turbo. Although piston ringland failure is pretty common, it could also be something as simple as a cracked rocker gasket. To check for ringland issues the easiest way is a comp test. Good luck and let us know what else you find.
Exciting
First!
P.S. I’m enjoy for the progress updates on the N54
Glad you like them!
How did u find out that the motor was done ?? Like symptoms and codes
Rough idle. No codes at all. Only did one pull when i drove it but wasn't wide open throttle. Diving the car normally it felt ok. So i think i caught it early. I have been very suspicious of this engine from the day i got the car which is why i noticed the idle and straight away started digging deeper.
Hmm.......How much Lift Envy can one person have I wonder?? Hmm.....Quite a lot it would turn out. I personally would never envy a beloved You Tube content creator for having tools of the trade. I mean they need it and deserve to have it unlike little old me here who works and slaves to bring home the bacon (Back bacon as I'm Canadian) and what do I get?? Well.... I'm pretty blessed really if think about it in the right mind set LOL. Just kidding everyone......But seriously, GIVE ME YOUR LIFT NOW!! (Said in Arnold Shortsarebigger's accent).
i'd think using some car wheel dolly's would have been much easier than trying to pull the car with the tiny wheels on the jack lol and they arent that expensive. maybe $100 US for a set of 4.
I think you are right.... haha. I’ve pulled cars on jacks before. But this painted floor was so slippery I just couldn’t put my power down lol. I was slipping all over the place
@@ZeroTo60Tube ah painted floors. great for cleanup but traction is non existent lol. you would probably still slip a bit with dollys then. yea the only sure fire solution would be to widen the door or have a door parallel with the lift in that space
hi Andrew, just to clarify - is that about 5 hours work?
Would you ever do turbos this way or do you think double jointed forearm traditional method is better?
Thanks mate 👍
Well I’ll see how long is takes to swap them on to the other engine. One thing. You still need to life the engine off the subframe to get to the turbos.
I’ll have a better idea at the end of the week. But I’m not sure it’s easier this way just yet.
"scary on your own"... scary watching on the other side of the world!
Well i hope it was entertaining a little as well. Haha.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Defo. Always good to watch. Look forward to these vids mate. As a fellow N54 owner, i know the joys of the build!
I thought n54's never blew up lmao This scares me for my own build
Unfortunately since this happening, i have done a lot of research. Not uncommon at all when you are pumping boost in on twins.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Can't those bottom ends usually fine up to 700 HP or so? and also what was your peak boost?
@@GraysonKurth Peak was 27psi. However the issue is making too much power down low in the rpm range. Which is why the cars with big singles on stock motors will do the 700hp pretty happily. The cars with upgraded twins make so much more power down low and thats when the rods get stressed. I was specifically only targeting lower boost than what the turbos could make in the lower RPM range, for that reason. I didnt target full boost until 5500rpm. Then again the exhaust housings also dont flow that well on the cheap upgraded twins, so everything runs hotter than a single setup.
@@ZeroTo60Tube okay, thank you. I was aware of heat soak issues with the (very) small turbos usually fitted when people go with a twin setup. Best of luck!
18:05 😂😂😂
What caused the engine to fail?
Was it too much boost?
Wont be able to tell if it was the poor treatment before i got it, or boost until, i put the e90 engine through the same boost levels. Which is the plan. One of the reasons i wanted to leave the e90 motor stock, was so that we can find out if there is a risk with these 17t turbos. That said this e92 was in a bad state when i got it. The previous owner was driving it with both a leaking radiator and a leaking water pump. So good chance it had been over heated at somepoint. Not to mention it did have that ticking noise i had mentioned a few times.
@@ZeroTo60Tube oh.. ok 👌 . Thankyou.
dude I literally just blew my n54 up last week :( deciding between ls swap or another n54
Ohhhhhh shit. LS is the easy way. If it was a drift car, an LS is probably hard to pass up. But for street driving N54 is such a nice motor. Do you know what caused your one? What mods are you running?
Now I’m debating building my is, any tips? Almost at 70k miles ~
@@ZeroTo60Tube well my dumbass money shifted 3rd to 2nd and I know I spun the crank hub forsure, drained the oil and there’s a shitload of little shavings in it so I’m going to do a tear down, love your content dude keep it up!
@@HorneyracingDude that sucks. Let me know how bad the damage is. I curious how much gets destroys when these do a crank hub. Pistons, valves and head?
@@ZeroTo60Tube well I got connected to a bmw specialist shop in Florida so I might just have them rebuild it(and build the internals!!!) so I’ll post an update if and when that happens! Gotta save a little bit lol
Wait how did you blow your motor?
The freakin water pump power wire rusted through in the boot. It would work sometimes, then not others. Basically i was driving around with an intermit-ant water pump. High boost on these china twins creates a tone of heat in the exhaust housings, that mixed with no coolant circulating. Its gotten hot and melted something. The motor is still waiting a tear down. My guess is cracked ringland and bent rod in cylinder 4.
@@ZeroTo60Tube yikes, these unreliable water pumps is the reason I always have my water temp showing on my JB4 app, cant trust the darn things. How was your timing running these Chinese turbos? I read horror stories of N54 blowing up because of timing. Scary knowing something so simple can end up catastrophic.
@@maddog5814 Currently running high 9s low 10s at peak rpm on e70 fuel mix. Timing can make a bigger difference than boost to cylinder pressures and heat, so its something to always be aware of. I do beilive the exhaust housings really are a bit small, when you are pushing that 750hp at the crank which is about where i am now. Its only a matter of time before something melts a little bit.
i hate my 335i , i bought in may, only drove it 4 days, in total rest of the times its in shops getting fixed, the problem with it I payed the guy about 10k more extra thinking the car was super clean after i checked it out.. i hate this car
Ahhhh man. This is the previous owners fault not the car..... everything is fixable. But I totally get your frustration. If you can stick with it they are a very rewarding fun car.

Well you need to find out what has happened. If a rod isn't hanging out. Do a comp test and see what you can find.
Can you help me with the code p0243 and my bmw 335i
Hi J, unfortunately i haven't got time to research it properly at the moment. Sorry dude, but a quick google implies thats wastegate solenoids, which is a common point of failure on the N54.
