  • In this video I discuss the drama surrounding the indie comic space.
Drama is natural in any competitive space and in almost all types of human interaction.
In many cases, I believe it is how consumers of drama (those who observe it) digest it that has the greatest impact on the community and the individual creators in the space, not necessarily those directly involved in the drama

I only have time for the uTube drama - no twitter action as that space is something I choose not to occupy.

Yeah Twitter gets real nasty. A necessary evil unfortunately for marketing

I just stay out all together. I’m not trying to close myself off from anybody because I think I’m cheating myself out of some potential good creations if I were to be so tribal about things.

You're a Snyderbro? Thumbsdown button, unfollowed, blocked!
(jk I actually don't have a problem with Snyder's movies. I just like making fun.)

What I don't understand is ComicsGaters suddenly deciding they hate drama and anyone they perceive as perpetration drama. ComicsGate was founded and built on drama. That's the whole point of ComicsGate. Giving the middle finger to the progressive activist in comics.

Yeah I don't get that either. The ones complaining about the drama end up being the most dramatic sometimes lol

Indi books do not have the stereotype of low quality. They may have had it years ago, but there have been too many former pros who are in the indi scene for that to be a thing any longer. The new stereotype and why people dont get into indi books is that they take forever to come out if they ever do, and the stories may just be a one and done. The American comic market has operated on the idea of ongoing stories and following characters they grow to love. Indi books have a hard time doing that, as the creators seem to lose interest in their own characters way too fast, and want to go and tell some other story with a new character. Add in that too many of these books take forever to come out and many people feel why bother. The indi market needs to establish a reputation for consistency and punctuality, that is the stereotype they need to overcome.

Punctuality is not the biggest issue, and it only affects some readers
The low quality stereotype is real, and it's thriving based on some of the indie books being praised

@@b.a.turner_vc Disagree. I hear far more complaints about late books or worried about a book not even getting done. Nearly all crowdfunding books have pages of their artwork posted on the crowdfund site so people can see and judge for themselves if they like the artwork in the book. You wont know how good the writing is but you at least get an idea of the level of artwork, which is half the fight in comics. You have no idea though other than through past reputation on when or if you will see the book.

Quality takes time. It's a shame some folks want hot and ready books

@@b.a.turner_vc Sorry but this is bs. The same pros that got famous from the quality work they did at Marvel/DC and turned out a 22 pg book in a month. It now take two years to do a 50-60 page book. I have seen pages from their current work or own the book myself and I saw or owned the work the did when at Marvel/DC, and if there is any improvement at all it is not enough to warrant an added 21 months.
The pathetic thing is a common complaint I hear from CG people related to some of the drama you were talking about is that EJ cant take criticism. Well neither can you or anyone in CG, because whenever I ask why they got a book out in a month at DC and is now taking 2 yrs I either get silence or non answer excuses like you just gave. Oh its quality and quality takes time. Well CGs illustrious leader is now about to hit 4 yrs for one of his books not being done. Michelangelo got the 16th Chapel painted in 4 years, so are you going to try and tell me that EVS's artwork in a comic book is going to be equal to the 16th Chapel?

    • @b.a.turner_vc
      @b.a.turner_vc  Місяць тому

Seems like you just don't like CG and are bias. Crazy detailed books take longer than mainstream books, especially when you are managing the entire team and process yourself
You also ignore the fact that many of us release books quickly after the main campaign ends. You are focusing on a select fee and judging an entire group based on that which is absurd
If you want quick mediocrity, go for it. You will miss out on great books
