    Great to hear how much you love Roman Szmal! I was deliberating between RS and DS but knowing some DS are harder to rewet I was sold with some more RS. Schmincke is my favourite though :)

      I know right. DS is frustrating that way. They are cheaply made with no humectants like natural honey to improve the smoothness and moisture in the paint. That’s why they crack and never stay in the pans or palettes. They are much better to keep in tubes squeezing out small amounts. But don’t let the tubes sit for months or they separate from the binder. But old mess but still a few good colors in their selection. Have to admit I never paint with them since making my own paint and having Roman Szmal options.

      @@JacquelineJax Aah that makes sense I’ve heard some dry to nothing etc just didn’t know why. I think honey or similar is essential so glad to know I’m not missing out on getting some more DS. I only have Buff Titanium lol. I make my own interference and metallic watercolours too as have lots of pigments it’s super fun.

    I should be receiving my first purchase of RS paints Monday, and I'm so excited! 🥳 I think I am getting five of the colors you have. Do I need to add extra water to get the different colors in the mineral violet? Since they are made with honey and remain moist, do I need to keep the case they are stored in open? Thank you in advance, I'm branching out and trying new brands! 😊

      That’s so exciting. I love Roman Szmal. They are beautiful paints. I only keep my case open if things are super wet but they seem to dry quickly so it’s not much of my concern. To increase granulation and see color separation try different amounts of water. Depending on the amount of paint it will do and show different things. They are lovely paints

    How do the Tintoretto brushes compare to the Escoda Versátil? Are they softer or more springy?

      Thanks for providing that. I was wondering why it was only dingle pigment. I haven’t seen a single pigment Gamboge since PY153.

    Hello, Jacqueline. After watching you swatch the comparable Roman Szmal watercolors, I went to the Jackson's Art website to contemplate the RSzmal Permanent Alizarin Crimson which you swatched as a comparison to the DS Perm. Aliz. Crimson. Jackson's lists the pigment for Permanent Alizarin Crimson as PR176 and for Antraquinone Red as RPR177. Would you please confirm the pigment you swatched. Thank you.

      Sorry about that. it is the RSzmal Permanent Alizarin Crimson

    I have most of the Daniel Smith and a fair number of M.Graham colors. I fell in love with those brands when I was in grad school, working on my MFA. The only Schminke colors I use anymore are their metallics--they are simply the best golds and silvers out there in watercolor, with the possible exception of the old Coliro pans.
    But the more I see and hear about the Roman Szmal watercolors, the more I think I need to get some. I'm saving up and waiting for a sale, so I can buy the big box set--I figure, go big or go home... ;-)
    Thanks for this interesting video--it was fun seeing the comparisons...

      There is a Roman Szmal review of the box set on my channel. Then several painting and swatching videos for you to see colors and painting performance. There is something about them that inspire me. Mostly moody tones and many granulating colors with high pigment loads.

    Overall, yes, I agree that there are other watercolor brands that are the equal of or better than DS, but I will say that I LOVE serpentine genuine. If I could only buy one color from DS, it would be that. Most of their other colors can be found in other brands.

      Is there a double for things like Mayan blue, lunar blue, Hematite or Amethyst?

    • @amypanddirtytoo1926

      That's literally my favorite color from DS. That and Quin gold with actual PO48 and PY150. Now that PO48 has been discontinued, we have to buy it from DS since he went and bought alllllll the remaining stock of that pigment as soon as the announcement came out. LOL, the sneaky little sh*t. If you love Serpentine genuine you will also love Roman Szmal's Autumn Green!

    I love RS but do wonder if there are brighteners (dyes) in them. I think the founder mentioned this in an interview and it was like a slip of the tongue moment. If there are, that brightness won't last. However, some of my favourite paintings I display about the flat were painted using RS.

    • @JacquelineJax
      @JacquelineJax  Рік тому +1

      No way. Lol. What interview?

    • @awatercolourist
      @awatercolourist Рік тому +1

      Roman Szmal said that there are brightners in his paints, yes. I do not think they are dyes, though. From what I understand - and I could be wrong here - brightners are white powders, not dyes. When Roman Szmal mentioned that, I do not think it was a slip of the tongue. I personally saw it as down-to-earth practical honesty. But then again, I do admire Roman Szmal and what he has done, so I might be partial 😅. Not a fan of his paints, though 😂.

    • @JacquelineJax

      @@awatercolourist that makes sense as to why they seem more textural. I primarily paint with my schmincke, but reach for Roman Szmal for that texture. They seem to almost all granulate, but not as dramatically as the schmincke granulating paints. However, the texture is interesting and I make good use of it. I wonder if aGallo uses the powder as well because they are really bold and a little goes a long way. They also are a bit thicker similar to Roman Szmal.

    • @awatercolourist
      @awatercolourist Рік тому +1

      @@JacquelineJax The thickness could be from the honey. You can test if there are fillers or brightness by doing the following:
      1- Find a small transparent cap like that of a small spray bottle or a small mister; but male sure that the cap has no hole in it, some have a small hole on the top.
      2- Fill it no more than half way with water. You can probably do that by using the spray bottle to spray twice or three times in the cap.
      3- Using a small, wet brush, such as a 1/4” flat, to pick up colour then disperse the colour in the water that is in the cap. Pick colour a couple more times until the water losses its clarity.
      4- Leave the cap undisturbed for 2-3 hours until the water is clear again and the pigment particles have settled to the bottom of the cap.
      5- Gently raise the cap and check the bottom. If there is a white residue then the paint contains brightners and/or fillers. If there is only pigment particles then you have good quality paint.
