If you get frustrated with the Garrett pinpointer strength like I used to, you'll probably appreciate this as much as I did: When you are close to a target (or say the playground column) and it's beeping and you wish you hadn't been on the 3 setting because it's too sensitive, press the power button 1 time quickly. This automatically lowers the sensitivity based on the distance to the object it's detecting right then. The result: I leave mine on 3 all the time and just press the button when I'm getting too much interference from something else or when I'm just have trouble narrowing down something's location. This completely changed how I used the pinpointer and it's amazing!
I am still waiting for mine. I ordered it a long time ago. Looks like a good machine. Interesting how some of the targets hardly sounded. Great advice. A learning curve is on the way
Good job finding the buffalo nickel. I myself try to stay away from calling anything a bucket lister. Once the list is over, we’ll it’s time to kick the bucket 😮😅
Ah, that is a great point.... I don't have an actual list but wow it is amazing when you find something that you never expected to find.... thanks Edward
We also have the Simplex. You can do an air test like this one but also put stuff on the ground and if you have a spot, I suggest trying different targets by burying them in the ground. Conditions change targets. I think I am going to work on another test where we bury targets soon. Maybe I will use several detectors.
Yes, it was an amazing find.... I feel it was dropped fairly recently and was probably being carried around as a good luck coin... no way has it been in the ground all that time.... very cool
Yes and no... to really learn what this detector can do, it will take some time... but it is so easy to turn on, pick a mode and go.... it was 100% easier to use than the Deus 2 for example....
Congrats on the buffalo nickel Bill, with a date on it. Normally that is one of the first things to wear off is the date. When you first get a new machine you can do a little better with them as you don't know what to dig so you dig more with them. Keep that Manticore out for a while and learn it. Great video :)
Thanks...yeah, My guess is it was being carried around as a lucky coin. There is no way it has been in the ground that long. I agree...gotta keep practicing with it
Do you think you like it better than the Equinox 800 for park and beach hunting? I have the 800, so I was wondering how you felt about the Manticore. I'm considering to upgrade or not.
So far I am still leaning toward the 800... It has done a good job and is hard to beat. I would consider going for the 900 if I was gonna just do an upgrade. But is the small amount of change worth the cost?
I've noticed over the years, that open air test do not do well on the tiny gold. Smaller gold such as hoop earrings & bracelets found at my beach , I was able to pick fairly easy in (all metal mode). The tones came in clear.... but light. Yet, when I try again later during open air test they almost wouldn't tone.......Open air is definitely not accurate!
Great video Bill, I just got my Manticore and took it out for the first time and was so confused at first, As you Sid its an easy machine to use but the numbers and 2D screen through me off the first few hours then it got a bit better. Think I'll Test the VDI' here at home to get familiar with the numbers and screen. One thing I did find is that it was hitting a ton more deep targets than my Nox did at a trashy park I usually hunt.
Hi Bill very informative video for anyone who has a Manticore and metal detecting in general. Even though I don't have a metal detector you made it interesting. I guess that is the same every time you have a new machine. The way you showed how to block out the different types of targets allows you to finetune you machine. The 1937 coin was impressive so well preserved. I was hoping the the large ring was going to be silver. Thanks for the video and looking forward to the next one💍👍
Thanks Roy.... I like trying new things but having just one good detector would be much better. I want to say I am done getting new ones but that would be a fib....lol. My favorite is still the NOX 800 but the Manticore seems really solid. The nickel really shocked me.
Thanks...so far so good. I feel it is a solid detector and I am trying to learn more about how to use it and the abilities.... really want to find a place that I can dig deep
Nice hunt glad your having fun I'm still learning on mine too but mine is an older one but I still love it thanks for sharing I'll see you on the next hunt God bless and stay safe 😊 😀
Hi Bill! My husband and I were talking to each other while watching this video. We would LOVE to see you do this same kind of video with the 800. It would be a super helpful video for new users of the 800 and interesting for current 800 owners to compare their numbers and grounding techniques. 👍💖 Keep up the good work and please tell Christine that we miss her! 💖💖
Great video and hunt 👍. Thank for the info on the Manticore. Congrats on the bucket lister buffalo nickel , rig and clad count Cha-Ching. Really enjoyed the video.
Congrats on your Buffalo nickel, Bill! It looks to be a recent drop, if the park you were hunting isn’t old enough for coinage like that. Then again, the park maintenance could bring in old fill dirt from anywhere..I’ve seen it happen before. Much success with your manticore! I see you were hunting in all-metal mode. (Horseshoe on). That’s alright, if you want to hear all the low grunts of iron(ferrous) targets and see the iron ID’s on your display with a red line underneath it….if you don’t want to hear the iron, turn off horseshoe mode. A couple other tips I can give you is to double check your “lower” ferrous limits setting…I see on your display that it’s very close to your non-ferrous line in the low(gold/foil) conductors region. Maybe try adjusting the lower FE limit setting by one notch to allow the lower conductor non-ferrous targets more room to “sing out” in case a target slightly deviates or bounces below the non-ferrous line. Also, you may have already seen that the different detecting modes/profiles produce different ID’s for the same target (but coins and coin-sized targets will be more consistent across different modes). That’s because each mode uses a different set of weighted frequencies….so trying to remember certain mid conductor targets by their ID won’t be advantageous when you switch to a different hunting mode. Like you already know, gold can come in from ID’s of 1 up to the high 50’s and even higher for big gold rings). I know you feel more confident with your Nox…that’s understandable….it really comes down to time spent hunting out in the field/beach to build more confidence and familiarity. Can’t wait to see what you find with the ‘Core! GL!👍🏼
Thanks Dan.... I totally agree that it was a more recent drop.... it was a public soccer field so I don't. As far as settings, I was running it for all targets since I am trying to learn the numbers. I don't mind digging everything at first. I am reading the manual and will be fine tuning it as I get better with it. I appreciate all the suggestions/info and will try out different settings. My next park grass hunt I will try out low conductivity which is supposed to be better for small jewelry. I am going to check the numbers on a few pieces of gold in every mode to see how much the vdi changes...
Hey Bill fist thing need to say I really like watching and saying that I want it to continue for a long time so when out in the sun remember to use the hat .Y out now that gold comes in all different VDI so just enjoy using a detector and I would say if it is more than 3-4 arrows down I am sure that 2-D screen will be off from time to time. Probably not the be all end all,but on shallow targets it could make a big difference between digging and not ,but not until you get more experience and confidence in the detector, keep on swinging, keep it fun and Happy Hunting 🙂👍..
Thanks for the great info and I have def learned that you can't pinpoint any specific VDI to gold... I have had gold come in at so many different numbers on my NOX that I dig every target... There are only a few numbers that I get excited about but even they let me down often...lol. As for the 2D screen it is more of a novelty at this point but like you said it can be helpful in some situations...
