@@luckyrail23 just look up Swift driver fail compilation and you'll see what I'm talking about. These people should never have been given a commercial driving license.
The Lafayette District here sees the last two Triple Crown roadrailers Westbound 255 Detroit to Kansas City and 256 Kansas to Detroit. Saw 255 yesterday and it's quite a treat to see them.
I got a # of Bowser RoadRailers of the Ice Cold Express with mountains design a # of years ago & added them to the Lionel Ice Cold Express Train. At that time, I took a truck with coupler off an extra Tow-Mate & put it on the rear trailer so I could hook up the set caboose. That distance is a little long---Maybe using a Weaver truck with coupler will be shorter!!! THANK YOU!!! By the way; I did all your modifications to my Ice Cold Express Train Set---Works GREAT thereafter!!!!
@@manderschannel2275 Yeah, I thought that they were supposed to be phased out by now, but every now and then you'll still see them on the tracks in the yard. Just like you still see the old Metra Hi-Liner commuter cars which staged at various yards around Chicagoland awaiting their fate. Triplecrown are the only ones I've seen last.
Just to let you know, that you with your videos, product reviews and instructional videos have encouraged me to work on a layout shaped like the letter "G". It follows the walls in the basement and the back spine of the "G" is 22' long, the width is 13' wide. I don't do videos so you won't see it anywhere but I wanted to say Thanks just the same.
Eric, great video, and timely. Coincidentally, I just picked up a few Bowser Roadrailers myself and haven't run them yet. Your video takes the mystery out of assembling a consist. Thank you!!
Hi Eric, I really like your videos. But I would like to know where you buy your Bowser trailers like Schneider's for example, believe me I have searched for them on ebay, but I have not been successful, I do not know if you could help me find at least one, I would appreciate it very much.
I was an outside counsel for Conrail when they partnered with Norfolk Southern and created the Triple Crown RoadRailer. I always loved these units. I'm sorry I never bought one.
Eric, great video as always. Tom McComas is a great guy. He lives in our town and we go visit him at his train store “I Love Toy Trains” all the time. We did an interview with him a little while back. Check it out on our channel if you get a chance. Happy Railroading!
that is awesome that you got these from tom mccomas from tm books & video (they're another one of my favorite train video producers and they're stuff always had me interested in model trains) from the i love toy trains series to various other videos love they're stuff
Not quite right on that you can still go out and see roadrailers on many trains today. NS has mostly stopped using them, I believe there is only one route still left. Swift and other carries were gone even earlier.
There's two types of intermodal containers. You can't put 53' intermodal on ships. Sea Containers come in two shorter versions. These trailers must have reinforced frames. I can't imagine a standard van trailer could survive the strain.
Another operating quirk of these: when running across sectional 072 curves, the truck spacing coincides with the rail joints, so instead of staccato clicking, you get a steady _CLACK...CLACK...CLACK..._
I like how Weaver kept the Bowser name. Showing their heritage instead of tarnishing it. Anyways I know this is out of era, but could you have the Lehigh Valley Black Diamond pull the RoadRailers since they're Weaver? It could be lie the Black Diamond was restored back to working order and they decided to let it pull some modern freight like the famous NKP 765 pulling the bathtub hoppers (I know the 765 is a mixed traffic train, I'm just trying to come up with something.).
Nice review! I used to want tp buy some roadrailers several years back, but I’ve moved on with TOFCs and containers. So what is your opinion on the future of MTH’s European product line? I just would like to ask about that because they’re also cool models, but I feel they’ll meet a similar fate as the Roadrailers.
plastic. Something like PET plastic I think. Same stuff they use for the truck side frames. It's pretty durable, plus the roadrailers are very lightweight so there's no a lot of force being put on them to begin with.
Great video Eric I have the roadrailer in HO and N scale on the HO you can put the coupler mate on the rear of the train it has a tongue to couple to the rear roadrailer you have to unscrew the rear truck from the roadrailer. I saw your coupler mate has the tongue on it so you can but it on the rear and you said you bought 4 coupler mate when Amtrak the roadrailer they had a coupler mate at each end and Triple crown some time did this on some of there trains for back up movement. Have you looked on eBay for weaver roadrailer parts and see if someone is selling the med tongue and can you modify the browser roadrailer to screw on the weaver med tongue. I hope you get more roadrailer.
Now you can make a mixxed intermodel. Because we're I live intermodels have weal cars. Roade railers. And those trailers on flat cars.at the same time.
I think this shows that you don't necessarily have to show the latest Lionel Loco to get views. Stuff you have on hand is perfect subject matter for a video too!
doublenickelbob why do people keep saying that? I put out a new video a couple weeks ago. I usually put them out every 2 weeks or so. Did you not see the previous videos? I’m just curious cuz you’re not the only one who has said this.
If anything, i personally prefer the look of trailers on spine flatcars. Road railers are cool but just look weird because the flat bar is hidden by a trailer making it look like the trailers are floating in air betweenthe trucks making a floating in between trucks air train road railers thingy majingymajimoner.
But otherwise great model and great video Eric never knew these existed in O scale If you have any Lionel O centerbeam flatcar, you should do a video on the MTH ones and the history of the centerbeam flatcar because I always wanted like a couple of them from 3-5 but not the MTH ones because they are to big and the Lionel ones are better size for my layout. Sub to my channel and find my video of my model trains and you’ll see why I would not put those MTH c-flats and your big boy 4014 on my layout due to how tight my curves are.
Just adding this You could take these apart to make regular road trailers, but I don’t suggest paying the money Eric payed to get these because that is just a waste of time and money
I never understand 3-rail when 2-rail O scale is available. Your layout looks pretty nicely detailed, but the third rail kind of ruins it for me. The Lionel type track, wheels and couplers all shout toy rather than scale model. On the other hand, lots of stuff is available in O scale thanks to Lionel, but it's too bad O gauge/scale is fragmented like this, and it's also too bad the track gauge was incorrect for 1:48 in the first place.
Hey Eric, they should feature your layout in classic toy trains. And subscribe to my channel, I mean, I may be a teenager but definitely familiar with road railers, and this hobby. Kinda strange I agree with you but not against them.
Did I tell you that I saw what I think was one of the new driverless freightliner trucks being tested with the trucking company, A.Duyie Pile which I think is kinda a somewhat funny name for a trucking company because of how immature it sounds. Anyway the name of that company to me is just a good laugh
Eleven years ago, I ran a ten-car set of the Amtrak versions (with side doors) on the tail end of my re-creation of the old Three Rivers train: ua-cam.com/video/pNGkvjs5VHc/v-deo.html I also have a quartet of the fictionalized RailMate versions made by K-Line, but haven't run those yet.
I grew up on I Love Toy Trains from TM, I still find myself humming the tunes when running trains.
Funny I meet them also I grew up with I love toy trains
That Swift trailer isn't prototypically correct. There's no massive damage to the box or road signs sticking out of it.
Ain't that the truth.
BluDog35 LOL that’s very true Swift is the worse!
I use to see swift trailers all the time, never saw a damaged one.

How do you get them to run flawlessly? I have them set to where they’re touching the tracks and have no directions on how to set them up right

Hello there, excellent video you've gotten at this time there.

plastic. Something like PET plastic I think. Same stuff they use for the truck side frames. It's pretty durable, plus the roadrailers are very lightweight so there's no a lot of force being put on them to begin with.
Just put them on an MTH Spine car, Husky stack or Atlas 89' Piggyback flats. Hopefully Hobbyking acquires the mold and offers these for 19.99
I have 2 PRR sets made by K-line awhile ago.
I was always amazed that the full weight of the entire train didn't rip the trailers apart on these trains.

Hooking a roadrailer to a couplermate is very much the same with the N scale ones Deluxe Innovations made. Sadly, those, too, are hard to find.
I love Eric's Trains... but I feel like sometimes he's the dude that outbid me ;-)
I know for a fact (as I own one of these and I own many more in HO) that you can install a coupler mate on the back.

Is the O scale a reference to the track gauge?
yep.
We don't have any of these in Salem Oregon

JRE actually, real trains run on 3 rails. It’s a secret most people don’t know. :)
2-Rail 'O' requires roughly twice the space owing to the minimum-radius requirements of equipment with body-mounted couplers.
Is it just me or are these trailers a bit over sized?
