Great video!!! I’ve made a couple rag rugs and always thought I was doing it wrong but watching your video I now see I wasn’t and I’m more reassured now. Thank you.
I have been watching on how to do this, but no one really shows how to start it in a way that is understandable until I saw yours. Thank you so much for doing this I think I might have it kinda figured out now. I wanted to study on this rug making before attempting it so I can do it correctly. Now I think I can thanks a lot your instructions are by far the best yet.
Thank you for sharing how to maintain a circle, the 2" strips help keep the rug thick and it hides the extra chain that is needed to get to the next stitch. Your rug technique is show room worthy. The way you softly ended the project is just what I needed to see. I've been finishing with a hard knot that had a tail that was woven back into the project. I also had different widths of cloth strips that I worked with, causing my project to have thick and thinner rows. I've been using multiple strands in my rounds which helps you to add as many colors as you want in a spiral pattern. I limited myself when I stuck to one color per row. I will mix it up again because that made a very exciting rug that has not been duplicated by me yet. Thank you again, 2" Strips it is for rugs.
Thank you for your kind words and feedback of my video. I'm not sure if there's a way to post pictures here, but I would love to see it when you finish!
Seaking of hooks, this lady has rug hooks for sale at "Rag Rugs by Erin" she is on Facebook too. I however recently stopped using FB. She posted a rug or two that I made. Rough beginnings till now, Erin Halvorson ragrugsbyerin@gmail.com
Love your fabric choice! Nice video! I cut up my granny's sheets that she use to get out for us kids when we would sleep over and made a large Country Cottage Rug.
deathgrip on the crochet hook check lol! i was prepared to dive into a rug yet halted at the stich. i ran across your video and first thing i saw was three things... and i had them all ran to get my stuff :D! thank you for making it so simple sis!
I've never crocheted before and have been wanting to learn. I want to make a rag rug from clothes as well. I think the material all has to be the same type, correct? Like either all sheet type material like you were using or all t-shirt material, or all towels if I'm thinking correctly. The way you explained it and showed it, I'll be saving this to watch at the same time when i start mine. I'm on a weight loss journey and am down 87lbs so far and still have a long way to go. I was either going to use the clothes to make a quilt to see where I was or the rug so I could see it year round. Heck, I may have enough for both at this rate. Thank you for sharing this tutorial.
Thank you so much for posting this. I just finished my first rag rug and am now starting a second one. I love it, it turned out beautifully!!! Thank you, again!
Excellent, clear tutorial--thank you! I have always been terrified of taking an increase-when-you-must approach when crocheting circles, without a clear pattern. This is the first time I felt like, "Just look at your rug. You can actually see when you need to increase. Easy!" So thank you for that lesson. Why do you increase by adding another chain, instead of inserting another single crochet? What would that do? Wouldn't it avoid leaving a hole?
This is an excellent video with clear video and detailed instructions. The texture of the rug is really lovely. I’m a lefty so I’ll have to relearn my skills or try it right handed. Is there any way you would consider making a tutorial for a rectangle crochet rug? That was my initial search, but this is a great skill builder and I will give it a go. ❤️
thank you for this very clear and helpful instructions. I do know how to crochet, but was just interested in the type of material and size of the strips. thank you for this great video. I will be making a rectangular rug., because of space issues...and will just crochet the first row as long as i want the rug to be and then follow your stitches.
I just love your video (and I have watched many others on the same subject): a really honest and good 'how to'. Many thanks. I hope you will make some more. p.s. I like your little zip pouch too.
I enjoyed this! Your hand sometimes went off screen, but I think I got the hang of it anyway. My grandma didn't sew her strips together - she had a no-sew way of adding more length. Wish I knew how.
You are the only one that showed vlearly how to make a slip knot! Thank you! Ive made 3 round rugs and would love to try a rectangular one also. Do you have a vid for that?
Just chain length you want, then Hal double crochet back and forth until it is as wide as you need. So simple, and as I am making some for my cold, slate bathroom floors, the entangle fits better. Also making a hall runner as wood floors are also cold!
I just watched your video, & it was very clear! Thank You for doing it! Can you please tell me what size is the crochet hook that you used? I bought a Bates Size US - T, but I think it look much fatter than your.
Francis, if the margins of my rug get "leafy" and don't lay flat, am I adding too many extra stitches? This tutorial was so simple!! Thank you so much!!
I'm sure it could be washed. You might want to allow plenty of room in your washer to deep clean it as needed. So if you had a rug any larger than maybe a 2'x4' you might would need to take it to the cleaners.
Hi - as I'm watching I notice you only crochet thru the back loops of each stitch, I've never tried that. Also, adding a loop, why not just add another stitch in the same loop you just crocheted in? Just curious if you have tried it both ways. I'm going to try your way and see how it comes out. Nice rug!
Can they be made so they are shaped like a rectangle or square? Would you just use like a chain stitch to do that. I use to crochet when I was much younger & don't remember many stitch patterns. But I think these are great & I would love to make some for my kitchen.
@@frannyjo5335 oh great that you are answering ! 🙏🙏 but again I mistaked.. if I want to do a 2 meters large round carpet should I always in each loop put 2 ? It doesn’t work (I am actually doing one and it stays not flat at all that way 😞 I think I did wrong somewhere ..?
I watched your youtube tutorial. I started my first rug. I have a lot of peaks and vallies (lumps and bumps) but got it basically in a circle. The craziest thing is when I changed to my second color and fabric it is waffling now. I have a beautiful ruffed edge. It would be nice if I wanted that for a table lamp but I want to make rugs. I stopped after the second row. Please advise me what do I need to do.
Francis Jones ya for sure. i try to go to my thrift stores to look for stuff that people have donated..and good will or the salvation army has good stuff too sometimes..so that save money for fabrics.lol I use scrap stuff too and just put pieces together to make bags. But i havent sewn in a while. I miss it..seems like I have no time anymore. Its meditation for me to concentrate on one thing and making it perfect.
Susan Jackson I would definitely make it a little bigger than the area you are planning for. I haven't tried washing one yet, but as long as you tie it off nicely you shouldn't have any issues. I plan to wash mine in the machine and lay flat to dry.
Ive noticed the higher quality fabrick, the less flyaways you get. Usually cotton is good & jeans seem to work the best. Maybe the thicker the fabric, the less flyaways? Otherwise, I would say carefully burn them off with a lighter like you do on your regular, everyday cloths. Just be careful not to light yourself up & you'll be all right! Good luck.
She seems to not understand adding stitches to the round, leading the center to be loose and airy. Maybe that's desirable for her, but this is not a tutorial I'd recommend. Oh well, on to the next! You should really stitch the fabric first, then crochet with balls of it like yarn. Better to stitch a 45° angle with the ends at 90°, so when you open the fold, they are straight with a diagonal seam. It's more structurally sound that way.
I'm a seamstress so I tend to work more with fabrics. I typically do not crochet. Others have made pieces they love from this tutorial and that's the only reason it was posted.
Karen Adams . . . Fold your fabric and use a rotary cutter. The more of one type of fabric you have, the longer your strips will be. They do not have to be the exact width or length to use them.
Super mam I like ur job I also want to do like ur job but I did have croch u r showing that croch and cutter that one did have plz send me address to take like that croch and cutter plz mam.
I thought the instructions was excellent, well done! You showed it the correct way by recording it with the hands like they were on us and that helped a lot!
I have saved dozens of ' how to ' in my rug section..... yours is the easiest yet. Tysm.
Working on my own rug while watching feels a bit like being taught by a friend, especially when you talk about your future projects. Love it!
loved this video. no airs and graces you just got on with it. i'm going to try this thank you.

Love it. I bet I could use those jelly rolls. So cool.
Someone said I could crochet with my hand, but watching you I believe I need a hook. Thanks for your video
Thank you...you are so thorough and I appreciate the strands of instruction. I will try it...
Great tutorial! Finally! Something I actually want to crochet! Thanks!
Thank you so much, so many people leave out the problem solving that needs to be done.
I came across this crochet rag rug.i have a lot of 2 inch fabric. I'll going to do this.thank you.
Thank you for the tutorial. I found your technique very helpful. Also, I believe your voice is great for teaching. Again thanks

But if you look at the piece at the end of the video, I didn't notice any holes?
It's just the simple way I've found that works best for me. You can always use techniques that work best for you.
Very nicely done👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

You are the only one that showed vlearly how to make a slip knot! Thank you! Ive made 3 round rugs and would love to try a rectangular one also. Do you have a vid for that?
I currently do not have a video for rectangle rugs. I'm working on lots of new things.
Very good teacher.
That would make a cute pillow!
Great video!! You explain the steps very well! Do you have a tutorial on a rectangular rug?
I currently do not have one, but hopefully time will permit me to produce one. 😊
This was so great! Thank you for the very clear instructions. Do you have any suggestions or a tutorial for doing a rectangular rug?
Melissa, I haven't made a rectangle crochet rug, but I'll give it a try and see what I can come up with for you.
Just chain length you want, then Hal double crochet back and forth until it is as wide as you need. So simple, and as I am making some for my cold, slate bathroom floors, the entangle fits better. Also making a hall runner as wood floors are also cold!
Great job on the tutorial. Thanks for sharing.
nice video. thanks i agree. love fabric choices
Excelente tutorial 👏👏👏🧶

Francis, if the margins of my rug get "leafy" and don't lay flat, am I adding too many extra stitches? This tutorial was so simple!! Thank you so much!!
Rhyannon Lallatin If it's not laying flat, you may be stitching too tight.
So beautiful
Thank you for your tutorial. This has inspired me to make a rug for my bathroom...can they be washed,or is this not advisable..thanks again
Frances Mantle I have a rag rug that goes in the washer and dryer as needed.
I'm sure it could be washed. You might want to allow plenty of room in your washer to deep clean it as needed. So if you had a rug any larger than maybe a 2'x4' you might would need to take it to the cleaners.
Wow! 💕 Could you use a jelly roll strip instead? What size is your hook?
I LOVE THIS! ❤️

Just curious if you have tried it both ways. I'm going to try your way and see how it comes out. Nice rug!
I wanted all of my stitches to look the same and flow the same. I'm sure you could add another stitch in the previous instead of the way I did.
very helpfull mam👌
Can they be made so they are shaped like a rectangle or square? Would you just use like a chain stitch to do that. I use to crochet when I was much younger & don't remember many stitch patterns. But I think these are great & I would love to make some for my kitchen.
Yes, but I haven't tried it yet.
Yes, but I haven't tried it yet.
Hello thank you so much ! So you add 1 loop in each loop all the way ?
Yes, until it gets too tight then I'll add 2 loops once.

If it's ruffling you were increasing to much, a round of just single crochet would have stopped it
I have wanted to learn how to crochet for a long time...do you have basic starting videos?
This is actually the very first tutorial I've ever done. As far as crocheting, I'm not big into it like I am with sewing and embroidery.
Francis Jones
ya I only know how to sew..lol wanted to learn embroidery too so I could make cute pillow cases for people.
It can all get expensive if you buy in at once.
Francis Jones
ya for sure. i try to go to my thrift stores to look for stuff that people have donated..and good will or the salvation army has good stuff too sometimes..so that save money for fabrics.lol I use scrap stuff too and just put pieces together to make bags. I'm sure you could use bulky yarn, but I haven't tried it so I can answer the question about how many skeins.
That would defeat the purpose of this being a rag rug tutorial, ravelry.com has yarn rug patterns
Hi I enjoy the video so do you need grip mat at the bottom ty
That's solely up to you.
Nice Job
Can you use yarn to make the rug
I didn’t get an understanding of how often - what sequence to add in stitches. How many per round or how often? Every 5 stitches, every 10?
Does anyone know approximately how many yards it takes to make a small rug.
do you have a video on a heart shape rag rug
I'm sorry. I do not at this time.
Would like to know the care of the rag rug when finished - i.e. What happens when it is washed? Should it be washed for shrinkage before being used?
Susan Jackson I would definitely make it a little bigger than the area you are planning for. I haven't tried washing one yet, but as long as you tie it off nicely you shouldn't have any issues. I plan to wash mine in the machine and lay flat to dry.
Oi boa noite..qual é o número desta agulha??
What size hook do you use?
how would you get the files if you used the rag yarn they have?
Are you using back loop only for this rug? thanks
I typically do not crochet, so I'm not sure as to what you mean.
+Francis Jones Young Why are you making a crochet tutorial video then?! no wonder you didn't say "chain 5" at the beginning of the video! lmao
Hahaha! I made the video bc others wanted to know how I did what I did. It IS a crocheted rag rug.
joannmartini Wow, how rude. And I am a crocheter.
Y love this, Helpe me
Where did you buy your rags from?
as I go on my rug starts to get s basket shape:/ I keep adding loops but it doesn't seem to help.. what am I doing wrong??
You're working it too tight. Try to loosen it a bit at a time until you get the desired look.
they have rag like yarn. could you use that?
Absolutely. It would take a lot more to get the fullness though.
What size is the hook you use
how do you. do away with the raveled edges of the strips
Ive noticed the higher quality fabrick, the less flyaways you get. Usually cotton is good & jeans seem to work the best. Maybe the thicker the fabric, the less flyaways? Thicker cotton fabric may be ok, but the thicker the fabric the harder it is to work with. A good quality fabric is best.
can you explain the type of rug at the very beginning of your tutorial
If you are referencing the colorful one, it was made just as the tutorial directs.
Thank you for the in
Is there a specific number you add on for every turn?
She seems to not understand adding stitches to the round, leading the center to be loose and airy. Maybe that's desirable for her, but this is not a tutorial I'd recommend. Oh well, on to the next!

What size hook are you using? (mm) Thanks.
Alison Ball
She mentioned the biggest one that you could find
Okay maybe this is a dumb question but I need to ask how do you cut the strips of fabric without it taking forever does anybody know
Karen Adams . . . Fold your fabric and use a rotary cutter. The more of one type of fabric you have, the longer your strips will be. They do not have to be the exact width or length to use them.
Do all strips need to be the same width?
I would highly recommend it. Your rows may not end up being the same width after stitching.
Bom que aproveita tudo
What is the hook size?
How much yardage would you need on average for a rug?
I can't tell you an exact estimate (or even a good close range), but it's a great scrap-buster project.
Y love rug rag, Y DONt now make this Helpe me please.
Super mam I like ur job I also want to do like ur job but I did have croch u r showing that croch and cutter that one did have plz send me address to take like that croch and cutter plz mam.
Hi I am staying in I do can u tell me the needle number
Im not undersrnading how to start the circle
My. Grandmother use to make these rugs and she was blind
Y portuguese please Helpe me please
You do not have to sew it- you can fold it over and slit it then slip the material through the slit- it won’t come out
I was wondering if that would work as well. I'm so new to this, but this video was what I needed to see tonight. I'll be starting one tomorrow now.
Awesome instructions, thank you so much
