  • The Vortex Tool allows me to get into tight places on my turnings where a gouge won't reach. It gives me that extra refinement of detail on my finials and boxes. In this video, I will show you how I hone and sharpen it.
Thanks go out to Stuart Batty for showing me this tool years ago. I have learned so much from him!!
Please take a minute to visit my website, www.cindydrozda... to see more woodturning tools and information.
If you are wondering where to get that grinder support platform, it is made by Stuart Batty Tools and sold by Woodworkers Emporium in Las Vegas USA. The platforms are not listed on the website, give them a call to ask about them.

Thank you, Cindy! I have wondered how to sharpen it. I think you showed us how to sharpen it at your demo but that was more than 20 minutes ago so I’ve forgotten! 😃

Thanks for the time and effort Cindy. I purchased your Vortex tool and I am very happy with how well it works for my spindle turning.

Thanks Cindy, I have to admit I made my own using a 3/8” bar from Doug Thompson many years ago. Works fantastic. Thank you for the inspiration for this tool grind. I always enjoy watching your videos.

    Cindy:
I do realize that you sell the vortex tool, and thus you have a vested interest , but some of us like to make our own tools whenever possible. It really isn't always being frugal, but I have never seen a woodworker who wasn't, but we build things, and building tools is really a crowning achievement for us. Could you provide a video on making your vortex? It really looks like a great tool.

Jim, This video actually gives you all the information that you need to make one. Grind a flat side on a piece of round bar, and set the platform to give you a 25 degree angle. I don't show the hogging out, but the final grinding is just like it.

      Cindy,
Thanks so much for the reply. I worked the angles theoretically and thus deduced the angle of grind for the "top" of the vortex to be a 10 degree grind from the lateral surface ( very shallow, a challenge). For myself, with a 6" old fashioned grinder I will have to innovate a bit. Here is my plan,
      1. Do a rough grind on that wheel to approximate the angle, but it is so shallow I will probably go to disc garnet off the bat.
      2. Switch to my disc sander with a garnet and get the true flat 10 degree shallow top grind. Hogging out later with a dremel grinder stone ,(VERY CAREFULLY!!!)
      3. For the bevel cut I will set the angle at 15 degrees from the flat of the rod shaft and rotate over the half round till I get the shape for the tip as per your video . I will likely use the garnet disc to get this done.
After all is done right, God willing, and several saints intervention, hone the top down as per your instructions with a 600 grit diamond.
I worked out the angles from the inside out with a theoretical square (360 degrees for any four sided figure) looking at the vortex from the lateral side. 25 degree side or lateral point angle and a 15 degree bevel off the lateral or side angle yielded a 10 degree top angle grind. I hope my math is correct, any hints are always appreciated!

I was thinking it over and applied a theoretical triangular (180 degrees for a triangle) check from the lateral view and the angles match at 10 degrees top angle grind and as per your video the 15 degree bevel. I really hope I am not missing something here.

@@jimkeown2074 You might be overdoing it with the calculations. Just get a 25 degree bevel between the flat and the tip bevel. There is no need to hollow grind the flat side. If the tool is sharp at the point, it should cut.

I guess I'll have to get a vortex tool now that I know how to sharpen one.
