  • In which John Green teaches you about World War 2, as it was lived on the home front. You'll learn about how the war changed the country as a whole, and changed how Americans thought about their country. John talks about the government's control of war production, and how the war probably helped to end the Great Depression. Broader implementation of the income tax, the growth of large corporations, and the development of the West Coast as a manufacturing center were also results of the war. The war positively changed the roles of women and African Americans, but it was pretty terrible for the Japanese Americans who were interred in camps. In short, World War II changed America's role in the world, changed American life at home, and eventually spawned the History Channel.

    But America had its fair share of shame, such as when the country turned away Jewish refugees on the St. Louis who would die in the Holocaust: www.commonlit.org/texts/jewis...
    During World War II, there was also a painful period of Japanese relocation and internment throughout the country: www.commonlit.org/texts/japan...

      Agreed! I'm a Mexican American and it troubles me so much that Americans don't know anything about the world and they are so ignorant that they don't even care or want to learn because they live in their own little bubble and a state of mind like "America is the best country in the world USA USA USA!!" I admire Europeans for being so culturally knowledgeable and always being well informed. I wish more America was like that

    • @michaelcurrier4492
      @michaelcurrier4492 10 років тому +2

      snoiprocs16 H.J. Res. 192, approved by President Roosevelt on June 5, 1933, provided that obligations payable in gold or specific coin or currency are contrary to public policy, and that those obligations could be discharged dollar for dollar in legal tender. After that resolution was adopted, currency of the United States could not be converted into gold by United States citizens, but the Treasury would convert dollars into gold for foreign governments as a means of maintaining stability and confidence in the dollar. Because the dollar was no longer freely convertible, one could consider that the United States was no longer on the gold standard at that time. If, however, one considers the gold standard as a monetary system in which the unit of money is backed by gold even if the monetary unit cannot be converted into gold, one could argue that the United States went off of the gold standard on August 15, 1971 when President Nixon announced that the U.S. dollar would no longer be convertible into gold in the international markets. The President was able to suspend the ability to convert the dollar into gold because there was no legal requirement that the United States exchange gold for dollars. On December 18, 1971 the President devalued the dollar, and even though the devaluation was effective immediately, only Congress could officially change the gold value of the dollar. Early in 1972, Congress passed Public Law 92- 268, which gave formal approval to the December 1971 devaluation.
      I get the feeling this is what he was talking about. Try maybe googling it a little bit next time? It's really easy.

    Actually, this video is only about the domestic side of the war within the USA, which is a pretty narrow topic to begin with, but there still is a lot of information that they have to present in 14 minutes. It's hard work cutting everything down while still having some sort of themes to stick to in order to keep people's interest. Pretty hard work!

    The first few decades after WW2 were the window of opportunity to establish a socialized healthcare system in the United States, just as it was for every other First World country (all of which did so). After that, the rapid expansion in medical services in turn led to the insurance lobby becoming too powerful, and FDR's ambitions were tragically never realized.

A Terror History Series (not only US but worldwhile, religious and/or political motivated) would be an opportune one. I know it will be very controversal but also very opportune to our times. Can someone explain to me why "Korematsu v. United States" is always mentioned but never "Ex parte Endo", considering how it was in the "Endo" decision that the government stated that a citizen could not be illegally detained if there was no evidence found to provide suspicion of a lack of loyalty?

    I really like this series particularly because John tries to take a balance approach giving both sides admitting both what have done wrong also what we have done right. But more importantly i feel he just explained what america and our history is really about its not about how perfect or amazing we are as we have seen we dont have the best record but the ideals we have developed and what it represents to the US and the world and how we are continually striving for this ideals we have.

    • @Ted52
      @Ted52 9 років тому

      Charles Larue Well, it would not be a Crash Course. You can say everything there is to say about the Winter War in 10 to 15 minutes.

    • @charleslarue792
      @charleslarue792 9 років тому +2

      DeathdwarfRising Which is, conveniently, the length of a Crash Course episode!
      *mic drop*

    • @charleslarue792
      @charleslarue792 9 років тому

      *shrug* Whatever you say, bub.
      It's a moot point anyway; the Winter War doesn't really have all that delicious trade and cultural exchange that gets Crash Course excited, and it was really one front of a much larger conflict anyway. More likely it would be a case study or an example than an episode of it's own.
      In any case, I feel that that language was entirely uncalled for, sir.

    In this video, they don't talk about it because it's a US history "course." I definitely wouldn't call anyone from a small(er) country stuck between badass evil superpowers pussies, though. That's a pretty damn hard situation to face by either a government or an individual.
