I overlap like 2-3 squares b4 I zip tie them. That way it’s stays round. Hope that helps for next time.

I use a large PVC pipe to shape the wire before filling. Also overlap a few squares to keep it from puckering into a V shape. I honestly think the Rousseau poles are way less work, look great in clear and have bonus snappies in the front!

I have used those green metal support poles sold in my local Home Depot and shoved it behind the plastic moss poles and tied it together for added support
I've only made wire poles. I cut off the wire pieces and I also bend and mold the wire into a half circle so the moss sits in nicely. Then I overlap the wire about 3 squares or so and then zip tie. Your poles look great though! Can't wait to see updates! 🖤🌿
Totally agree when you said that plant care is all "trial and error". I really love your videos. They're nice reminders that were all just learning together. Its a constant state of growth and we're constantly learning and adapting as plant parents ❤️
The poles look great! Sydney plant guy says to not put the moss in too tightly as they are harder to keep moist, he also has a plastic backing on his.❤
When I make my wire poles, before I add the moss, I lay something tubular on the wire (like a wine bottle or a bottle of Bacardi) and "pre-roll" the wire around that; not all the way closed, but close. Leave enough of a gap to get the moss inside. It gets the round shape started for you, the two edges are much closer to each other, and 4-inch zip ties will work. And when you're done you can drink what's inside the bottle. 😉

I pre-bend the wire into a roughly "c" shape before filling with moss. It helps keeping them round, and makes it so you don't have to apply as much force when trying to close them off. I use the same small black cable ties and they haven't been a problem for me when doing it this way.

Hello, something that helps me round out my moss poles is one of those thick cylinder tubes that comes when you purchase a new large rug. 😂 I decided to keep mines and thought it would come in handy for something some day and long and behold it helps me curl and round up the wire mesh for moss poles. i made one of these just today!! i find it super easy to make, although making multiple ones in one day will get painful for the hands for sure. they are also kinda shitty to store when filled with shpagnum, so i just make one when i need it.
i personally dont care if my pole isnt perfectly round, i just kinda squeeze it into shape. i also water them with a bottle that has a 0.5 cm hole in the cap (as sydneyplantguy recommended) which has been lifechanging for me hahaha
I too watch Melissa and started making moss poles like her. I shape the wire before filling them. I also cut off all the wire ends instead of bending them in. I have them stacked up to three high and they are steady.
I remember that iconic moment very well. I bought metal wire a while ago and still havent's used it. Now I wish I had bought plastic. When your hand got stuck it reminded me of the time recently when I tried to clean my watering can on the inside and slid my hand in there and couldn't get it out for the life of me. I honestly thought I would be stuck with a watering can instead of a hand for the foreseeable future. My parents contemplated whether it was a good idea that they didn't abort the pregnancy while they still had a chance.
You can put a plastic backing before you insert in the moss. This will also prevent the roots from escaping the mesh

The clear Thiccly ones are working fine for me so I plan on sticking with those or other clear poles 😅
I do like the idea of the wire being more sturdy for large plants, It just looks like soooo much work whenever I see anyone make them!

Try to overlap 2 or 3 squares at the back when you tie the poles closed, that should help keep a nice round shape🌿

I’m sure someone already pointed this out but to NOT get stabbed when rounding out the pole just cut the sharp bits off and nobody’s pole is perfectly round its all about the angle 😂 but you did that friend GREAT JOB !

You can totally combine the two styles of moss poles, wire front and plastic backing so you get the best of both and don’t have to sacrifice the water retention! That’s what Emma at GoodGrowing does!
And Melissa just uses scissors to cut down the moss sticking out of the holes!

Just make sure whenever you extend, you open up the top of the first pole and slide the second one inside! Doing it that way makes for better stability!

What’s saved my hands while making wire moss poles is using cut resistant safety gloves. You’ll be able to make as many as you need/want and it helps when trying to round out the pole ! Hope this helps (:
Getting the round shape is easier if you use a tube the size you're aiming for top wrap the wire around.

Yep, gotta go water my moss poles. My house is so dry in the winter and I haven't kept up, but the plants are limping along.
🤣🤣 The title alone. I don't like moss poles but the trick to it is using really good moss that is loosely packed and only fill as the plant grows. Also a squeeze bottle is so helpful for watering. Not sure I want to make one of those. The most I have done is cut out the front and wrap the node sections with saran wrap that is pressing against the moss. Someone said to use laminate, and fold it around the plant.

I used to cut those wire pieces which hurt our hands. Also if you watch melisa she doesn't tie both the ends together. She overlaps one over other which kinda gives a shape to it. You're amazing ❤
Just a thought.. why not add spag to the pole as you go.. just make circles with the metal, then stuff em as the plant grows.. or do you just moisten the bottom half. On my bigger plants I have a cup that I poked tiny wholes in set on top for a gradual saturation. Love your videos ❤

You did a great job! My suggestion is to make moss poles on a different day than planting,it’s less stressful. I shape mine just using my hands until I’m happy with the results,it will never be perfect but as the plants grow you won’t notice small imperfections,another time saving idea is to attach the cuttings at the moss line on the wire before putting soil in and than the pot,so much easier and faster,than you just fill to the soil line,tip into pot and backfill. Extending is easy also just follow Sydney Plant Guy instructions.I have a huge roll of the plastic covered mesh as well,to protect your hands,gardening gloves help. I made the same mistake of buying the small cable ties😅
I use those sports drink bottles with a pop top lid,a whole bottle turned upside down to water pole and pot and every other time I fill 3/4 full just to water pole. I have also tried putting a hole in lid on a 600ml water bottle and putting a wick in as it doesn’t drip everywhere,make the outer wick just sit on the moss and it wicks the water down slow and no mess.💚🌿🪴 Natalie
I have a moss/tree fern fibre pole that's 1.5 metres high, D shape 6 cm in depth and we are currently in Summer in Australia and only water every two weeks. I think adding tree fern fibre is the answer. It has a plastic backing. Would never use anything else because I would be to scared that when going away and relying on some else to water, they would all die. Love your energy. I also love that you are honest in saying you're not totally happy with something even though you have put so much energy into it. Trial and error - how true.

Wire poles hardly ever come out perfectly symmetrical but yours looks fantastic 😁
I have done the wire poles but prefer the plastic mesh with pvc in the middle. I use 5’ PVC poles 1/2 inch with a cap on the bottom and drill a few holes in the pole on all sides where I put water in the pole and it slowly waters the plant for a few days. My pole plants were fine last summer in Texas with the water in the pipe while we were gone for 9 days on a cruise. I have Pothos, Hoyas, philodendrons, etc on these poles and the pvc keeps the plastic mesh strong. Hope you try it!!
This video confirms why I’ll stick to clear D shaped poles. I may try grow vertical poles sometime though
You bend the wire before you fill them, I use the floor and slowly roll them start from the bottom all the way up, then I do the other side till they meet in the middle. Hope this helps

I think it must just be the wire, I make mine the same as SPG (and have over 20) and they all end up round without me having to do anything 🤷🏼♀️ I used to hate making them but persevered and am super quick now 👌🏼

Try rolling it like a sushi roll on the floor, maybe put a mat or towel down to protect your floor. I don't think they'll ever be perfect. Yours look great from my view! I totally feel you on the carpal tunnel 😆

I ordered some moss poles from Grow Vertical, just to see how they're made. Then I bought all the materials off Amazon to make my own. I need the plastic backs because it's so dry down here in Washington state (the desert/ wine country region). It'll be interesting to see how they work for you. Edit: I find that it's easier to attach the plants to the pole, using pins, BEFORE you put the pole in the pot. Yes, it's a tedious process, but the outcomes are worth it. Good luck!!

I like the solid back poles so much better. My full wire ones dry out way to fast. Yours look so nice. If you don't like that white zip tie, after you put the others on take that one off and put a black one on.
I started with wire poles and learned to despite them 😂 whatching you remindes me of why.
Wait till the top always keeps to stay dry - BUT alge covered - while the bottom is still soggy. thats why starting with such a big pole is a hassle.
then I started to leave the top dry. but then the moss gets hydrophobic and spraying it with water got my shelves wet. our tap water is way too hard to use the shower for watering and its annoying to carry around cause the pot is always too light for such a long pole and it wants to topple over in the tub.
my solution is a water wicking string that sits in a reservoir and keeps my moss continuously moist and perfect.
one more con to the wire poles: when you try to remove your plant you can either cut up those tiny squares or lose some nice long roots 😢
I hope you will find your solutions to any inconveniences you may encount. remember, your old poles also had cons.
and if you don't want to continue building wire poles, maybe you will find another great way to use up that wire roll. because I really need some ideas for that big ol' roll I have flying around 😅
I'd definitely recommend checking the verrucosum with a microscope - mine looked like that when it had broad mites, and those things are smaller than flat mites. They're no harder to treat than any other mite, though - frequent washes should sort them out.

@@wildfern I hope not too! Pests are bad enough but the ones you can’t see are even more annoying. I had flat mites and thrips simultaneously last New Zealand spring. It made me want to throw all my plants away for a few dark weeks that are now referred to as the Thripocalypse. Some of those plants are still in quarantine, lol.

I let both ends lap over each other and then connect them with the cable ties. This reinforces the cut edges. And I don't fill the moss sticks too tightly, then they are easier to shape. But that's just my personal experience 🤩

You should form the wire to the pole shape before filling. Use a pvc pipe or something similar to form it around.
I just started making these a few months ago. It gets easier with each one. I struggled to zip tie them at first but it is much easier now. I think the hardest part is cutting them and taking care of the pointy pieces. I used gloves at first but now I really don’t need them. Don’t give up bc it gets easier with each one. Also as long as mine stands up it’s round enough for me lol. Great video!
Really thought the poles looked great. The lack pops the colors on the plants ypu chose. Gives the greens in them more depth.

You’re a trooper!! I now have another reason for not liking moss poles in general. Your pole looks good to me, but I get it. 😊 There are some UA-camrs out there that show how they make moss poles maybe it would help.

We use this wire (uncoated tho) in garden beds and gopher baskets and a couple tricks I’ve learned over the years is to wear rubber coated gardening gloves (make sure you get your size!) and overlap the wire by at least a couple squares to make it round. I to use rabbit cage crimps (and a good crimper, not the cheap ones, ouch!) and another pair of hands as needed. Good luck!
U should give the mesh some overlap at the ends when u fold them, also tie them first and then stuff them with moss
Hey Fern, What definitely makes the whole thing better, is that you cut of these bits of wire. I know, it takes like forever, but than u don’t have to twist them on the inside and pinch yourself. 😂 But overall your moospoles look exactly like mine, Sydneyplantguys or the ones from Melissa ☺️

Nope to the wire poles...lol. I like the plastic "D" poles with a long garden stake attached to the back for stability. Plus they don't dry out as fast and you can see the progress of the roots through the clear plastic. You really struggled! I will be curious to see their progress in a few months and get your review. I don't want to have to break out my toolbox to make a moss pole, lol. I hope you like them since you have a big roll of it. I always enjoy your videos so much! Take care and plant on....!

Fern I use 6ft green garden stakes zip tied tot he back of the poles when I extend, this way the pole covers the extension too and allows you to even carry it by the pole
Hi Fern, yeah they're not fun to make at first but I have found that overlapping the wire by 1 or 2 squares will give it a rounder shape and then once I'm done I roll it gently to round it out a little more. Mine aren't perfectly round either but close enough and yours look like they are fine. If they're able to remain freestanding then they're good. Personally I now only use clear plastic ones so that they stay moist longer and it's a little less work for busy me 😝 Can't wait to see your verrucosum and the others size up! ☺👏🏼

Lol 😅. It is not easy to make those polls. It takes me a while to make a few of them. But I find an easy trick to make them by bending the wire in a circle shaped before putting the moss in it, then it is easier to close . But yes, it is definitely pain in the you know what. But I like it with my Pothos it made my leaves huge

Your poles look great! They look round, so I’m sure all the other poles on UA-cam are also not perfectly round.
I have had my fill of welded wire from keeping backyard chickens. For my big plants I have actually ordered the other poles Sydney Plant Guy uses - Grow vertical. They have a plastic back and a coated wire front and are a massive D-shaped pole. Having the plastic back helps with my under-watering. They seem pretty sturdy. My monstera is on one and she’s a beast.
I just put some marble queens on a pole too! I saw one climbing a pole with HUGE leaves on Reddit and I couldn’t resist

To bend the wire in a circle before filling it with moss use some sort of mandrel. I use a heavy duty pressed cardboard tube that was used in packaging and decided to keep seeing possible future use. I don’t use zip ties, instead I use the ends of the wire from cutting off the roll to bend into the other side of the rounded pole. I need to bend these sharp ends anyway so make it one step to close the pole. I use my knees to also help shape the wire onto the mandrel. My weight does not break the strong mandrel.

I love the look of the Jessenia pothos. I recently bought an aureum Green Queen pothos. Love the many varieties!!!!! I have made two wire moss poles. I tied the wire mesh with the zip ties first, then pushed the sphagnum moss in with a stick. It was the messiest task and I am scarred by the process. Won't be making them again. Sydney Plant Guy occasionally fills his poles with aroid potting mix.
Rando tip: A lot of plyers come with built in wire cutters!

@@wildfernI seen Sydney Plant guy cut his by standing the wire straight up. He started at the top and went straight down like cutting paper. I also went in between the squares but I will try his way next time. He cut those things out so fast like that.

I make my own moss poles with wire mesh like yours. I haven’t had any issues. Your wire mesh does look longer than mine & maybe it’s thicker? If you cut b4 a new section, you’ll only have to bend one side of the cut ends. The only other difference I can see is I preshape them & spread them just enough to add the moss, but rounding it has never hurt my hand 🤷♀️
