Richter is playing the 4th piece (Allegro) absolutely brilliantly, starting at 23:20. What a power, what a pace, what a control!! In some passages he plays like the devil is on his heels chasing him! Or is he riding a galloping horse? You can clearly hear that Richter loves this piece.
In my view he plays this Allegro better than anybody else including Pollini, Perahia, Kempff, Lupu and Brendel.
    Some great moments:
23:20 the exciting & energetic opening theme
    23:52 hard hitting high notes
24:39 a new theme introduced - I sing or whistle this melody often, especially from 24:51 onwards! Even my 20 years' old daughter loves those happy notes after 24:51. Richter keeps a very good pace here, where many others slow down because of the complexity.
    25:17 beautiful control
    25:24 madness & virtuosity
    25:44 brilliant cross-hand playing
26:00 calm down, calm down so nicely
26:15 hey, are we in a new romantic piece suddenly? No, there is the galloping theme again!
27:04 tension is building up to 27:37 and transforms into beauty. What a perfect pace around 27:59, slowing down to...
28:28 repeat of the first theme
29:19 the repeat of the crazy "jolly" galloping ride, ending in the sheer madness of 30:04 - 30:20 (the only critic could be that from 30:04 he slightly drops the pace, but much less than other players)
An even more fast & furious Allegro he played 14 years earlier in Budapest: ua-cam.com/video/RN1G96zU_CE/v-deo.html
The great Franz was only 31 when he passed away. The world lost a great composer that day! I visited his grave in Vienna in 1987 and will be back one day...

Thankyou for sharing your sensitive perceptions of Schubert's 'galloping ride'.I feel it is if he has a meeting with his destiny, and that is d959 and 960. Don't stop me, I must finish this final journey...
And indeed, Richter is the perfect horseman.

David Frankel That’s an interesting comment. Schubert may indeed have felt that he was on a journey from D.958 to D.960, but that is a journey that Richter never made. According to Monsaingeon, he played D.958 63 times in public and D.960 42 times. But he NEVER played D.959. The only Schubert sonata he played more often than D.958 was the A major D.664, with 65 performances. By the way, Richter also never played ten of Beethoven’s piano sonatas, including the Waldstein.

Thanks for your enthusiastic analysis, Gijs, with which I totally concur, apart from one point. You use the word “jolly”: for me, this is the least jolly music I ever heard. You were much closer when you spoke of a galloping horse, and the devil on one‘s heels. Surely we are in the same dark forest as the Erlkönig, and where Death is seducing the Maiden? The finales of this sonata and of the Death and the Maiden quartet are - for me - shot through with tragic defiance that makes them as cathartic as the greatest Greek tragedies. I put Brahms’ Fourth Symphony in the same category, by the way.

Hi @@antwerpsmerle1404, thank you for your kind words. When I wrote "the repeat of the jolly ride" I meant this ironically. I will put it between quotes to make this more clear :) Yes indeed, this is the devil on Schubert's heels, like the Erlkönig is scaring the hell out of the little boy. With musical greetings, Gijs

Thank you, very helpful! Could not agree more about the fourth movement. It is transcendent. Interestingly, far more evocative, beautiful, and coherent than in his 1958 concert recording, at least to my amateur ear. Beethoven is referenced in the opening movement. In addition, the fourth movement of D958 seems reminiscent of the second movement (C minor, Allegro molto e vivace) in B’s Sonata 13, Opus 27 no. 1. Does any one else hear this?

A widely held opinion and probably still an understatement. I reckon most of his equals are pianists long dead, like Liszt, Busoni and Rachmaninov.

Eigentlich ist die Interpretation eher eine Spur gravitätischer als man sich das vorstellt. Aber eine gewisse Anfechtbarkeit gehört oft zur Genialität.

My favorite Schubert's sonata for piano. Deep and mesmering, without any hesitation a work created under the influence of Beethoven, even it shines with its own light.

A meeting of two musical geniuses, Schubert and Richter, was bound to create something quite out of this world - but not the first time. No other pianist can come near Richter in this performance. Sadly, we are unlikley to see such creative genius at the keyboard again. Thank god we have these recordings for future generations.

Richer is outstanding from the very beginning. He marks a sudde decrescendo in a place where most of the pianists play forte, and thus introduces naturally the intensity of all the following. The sonata is full of such moments.

Sounds are 'words' one listens to a voice. Thank you Sviatoslav from the foundation of my being.....Schubert with Spinoza Darwin Newton and Shroediger are what we are...or can strive to be....the beauty around us and the human condition. ....how amazing are the stop points that Franz uses ...they are similar to the idea that we can do this also. ..but not now
Fantastic Schubert but also ....fantastic richter!
