    Hi there. I just made 32qts of homemade vegetable beef soup and would love to can most of it. Being new to canning and have never canned, I think I'm going to buy one of these Presto electric canners. I have plenty of 1qt Ball Mason jars to can them in.
    Is it true you can not can certain vegetables and meat? I froze some of it today and have the rest of it in my fridge. Any suggestions? Timeframe to can the soup? 33qts of soup was about $60 to make. Would hate to see it ruined. Last question, how long can the jars last before going bad? They'll be stored in a environment that is 60-77 degrees Fahrenheit year round.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @BrittonFarmsHomestead
      @BrittonFarmsHomestead  2 роки тому

      You should pressure can soup 90 min with meat inw qts. There are several things the USDA suggest that you dont can. I do can things that are frowned upone by the USDA just do your research and decide if you want to venture into things like that. If sealed and stored correctly canned food can last for years.

Or do you have to go strictly by the recipes? I thought I could just make my food , stick it in the jars and can, lol. Lot's of questions, Would really like some do's and don'ts list or more tips. If you get one of these canners, please read all the instructions carefully. I try to never make negative comments, but did see things directly different than instruction book gives. Of course, everyone does things a little differently and might prefer different results. Just a note - the book does say that a 13 amp extension cord can be used if it is 10 feet or shorter. Didn’t work well for me as it seemed to add quite a bit of of time to each process. Kudos to all of you who are willing to help others learn.

      @@BrittonFarmsHomesteadDid you take the seals directly out of the package and put them on the jars without washing them in hot soapy water and rinsing? I have been canning since 1973 and ALWAYS prewash the seals and rings per instructions. I have been using two Presto Precise Pressure canners for almost 14 months and have had excellent results. Have fun canning.

  • @IrisCox

    The Presto instructions says it can water bath pints not quarts. Your using quart jars?

    • @BrittonFarmsHomestead
      @BrittonFarmsHomestead  2 роки тому +1

      Yes I am canning in quarts. I am pressure canning not water bath canning. You are not able to water bath quarts in the canner because it’s not deep enough to bring the water level over the top of the quarts they are to tall. You can pressure can in quarts because the water level doesn’t have to cover them.

    • @BrittonFarmsHomestead

      @@BrittonFarmsHomestead I have finished canning butter in the half pint sized jars. While the product appears to have canned satisfactorily so far, I definitely DO NOT recommend using this sized jar on this canner. The jars are too light and "floated" in the water. The water line is too high on the jars and they definitely leaked, something that I haven't had happen before. Lastly, the jars were very hard to get on and out of the canner. I absolutely 💯 love this canner, for the pint size, Bd hopefully the quart too, haven't done that one yet but I plan to. Cheers.

    • @BrittonFarmsHomestead
      @BrittonFarmsHomestead  2 роки тому

      I have not figured out how to skip that part some people say they can but I have not. I just had hot jars and hot product in the jars already and added hot water to the canner and just hit the arrow once it beeped for that step to be over so it can go ahead and start canning.
