    Hi! Congrats on getting your new guide dog! I have a black lab cross guide dog called Revel, im in the UK, we have different harnesses and handles the leather harness is bright white with removable neon reflective strip that goes across her chest, the handle is yellow metal with a brown tough leather handle. In the UK our guide dogs are only trained on exculators if you live or work in the big cities. My guide dog is not trained on exculators, so when i go to London for my regular Eye clinic we have to use the elevators or the exculators are turned off so guide dogs and their owners can use them like stationary stairs. I wish you a long and happy partnership with your new guide dog 👍🏻

    Koa and you were awesome! I am not considering a guide dog at the time because my vision is reasonably good for navigation. But it amazes my how you were able to navigate around all those clueless people. Congratulations to both of you!

      I do have pretty good vision as well, but I never would have been able to get around all those people and obstacles without him! Thanks for the comment!

    Heya fellow teammate! You and Koa were flying down that sidewalk. What a great team! I have to admit I laughed out loud at the part where you passed right in front of that lady. I remember you telling us all about it. Boy, you guys really did sneak past her, haha! Great work, Derek and Koa!
    Ok, my question for you about training. What are 1-3 of your favorite memories of those two weeks at GDB.

      Hey there Hope! Great to hear from you! Yeah, we sure did sneak past her! lol...I'll have to think about your question and share that in my upcoming video. Better keep an eye out for that! Thanks for the comment!

    Sounds like you guys are off to an awesome start. Did you happen to do a video on dog day itself? Talking about your feelings that day and all of the chaos there of, might be something interesting that people want to learn about. Also graduation.

    Hi Derek. Loved the video. I am particularly interested, as I am currently on the waiting list for my first guide dog here in the UK. It would be interesting to hear your journey from application, through assessment and approval. We go onto a waiting list after we have passed the assessments, and is currently 12-18 mionths wait :-(. It would be good to see how your traini ng differs (if it does) to the UK training. We get a potential match with a dog, meet the dog, then the dog is taken back, the following week - we go to a hotel for 2 weeks intensive training with the dog, followed by 4-6 weeks home training, and then have an assessment to qualify as a partnership. Very much look forward to more in this

    Hi Derek, it’s so good to hear from you and about your time at GDB! I can’t wait to hear more about your journey! I do have one question, I thought I could see something black connected to your treat pouch, what is that. It was kind of flapping at your side as you walked it looked like it was black.

    • @LifeAfterSightLoss
      @LifeAfterSightLoss  5 років тому +1

      Yes, there was something connected. It was a towel for me to wipe my hands on. Koa loves to lick and gets my hand very wet when I give him the kibble. So, I would wipe it off along the way. Great question! Thanks!

    For me, this was a trip down memory lane. I lived in a condo on South West Park (on the park blocks) near PSU. I walked those streets daily, not with a cane, not with a guide dog, just my legally blind dies. We moved from Portland three years ago so it was a visit home.

    • @BraverGal
      @BraverGal 5 років тому

      Legally blind eyes-not dies. Thank you, Siri.

    Question: does your dog become more like a typical family pet when he’s not working with you? Great video! Brave going down that escalator!!! Enjoy!!!! Thanks for sharing.

    • @HannahniahMarin
      @HannahniahMarin 4 роки тому +1

      Service dogs and guide dogs both become family pets when not working. They run around, play ball, get to be goofy, all the fun things pets do. (Nothing misbehaving.) But right when the harness is on, they are working and very focused.

    Amazing. When there are people in your path, can you see them at all or does Koa maneuver you around them?

    • @LifeAfterSightLoss
      @LifeAfterSightLoss  Рік тому +1

      I can see them once I get close, but if he can get around them he will. If the path is small, I think he gets frustrated. Sort of like "doggy road rage" haha...Thanks for the question!

    Awesome video! I remember going to class for my dog a few years ago, though we attended Guide Dogs Of The Desert. As a fun fact, I believe a puppy from the puppy raiser club here in Las Vegas graduated in your class. Her name was song! Anyhow, as a fellow guide dog user, I’m interested in what your dogs pace and Pull are like. Did you get a fast dog with a hard pull, or do you have more of a mellow guy with a pretty average pace and pull?

    • @LifeAfterSightLoss
      @LifeAfterSightLoss  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for the comment! First, I really like your videos. I watched a lot of them before I left for GDB. And, as far as my guide's pace and pull, he is super fast and has a great pull! I teased in class how we walked 90 miles an hour everywhere we went! But, I love it. Thanks again!
