Amy Hesler service dogs don’t have to be certified. There is no official certification or registry for service animals. They just have to be ready for public access and to be able to reliably perform at least one task that mitigates the affects of a debilitating physical or mental condition.
I need to figure out what kind of vest I want to get my SDiT.... She's a 1 & 1/2 German German shep and her normal dog harness is not cutting it anymore... To top it off my current SD might do better in a mobility harness.... Which his current one is a good one... Four years old and the padding is almost dead... I worry a lot cuz ford just turned 6, and does ALOT more than we ever thought he could.... And is actually too small to deal with everything alone. The pup has to sleep with me and him to help if I have a seizure, cuz ford needs his sleep now XD And omg. My dog is so cute, we have the same issues with ppl coming up, using a do not pet leash cover has helped.... But it also caused ppl to think he would bite ppl!! When I'm out with both the dogs I have to put the do not pet wrap on the pup... Because someone thought running up to a friendly looking GSD and hugging their head.... Unfortunately the pup did bark and scare them, working on it... But then they acted like she tried to eat them. Like wtf. She barked because I live out in the country... Not many other ppl. So she was like woah back up who tf are you!? Other than that she was great~ Ignores ppl way easier than ford did at this age♡
I use a tactical vest with my GSD. Other harnesses just dont seem as fitted to their body shape. They would rub in the shoulder arm pits and then be too loose on their skinny parts (mine is athletic lol). The tactical one was like...ya know GSD are usually tactical dogs, so they fit her correctly!
I love the holo vest. I have one vest and I had to alter it at time cuz it was too big but now its getting too small. I have all kinds of harnesses and outfits for dog friendly fund raising events we attend but only one vest for when she's working.

Awesome gear! I have a question if you don’t mind or to anyone else who wants to chime in and answer, just out of curiosity. So I know that you self trained Dakota yourself, I was wondering how did you train her to be so calm and not bark when the other dogs in the background started barking, she didn’t bark she was so calm and she stayed by your side how did you train her to do that? I don’t have a service dog but if I were to get a puppy in the future just as a normal dog I would like to be able to train the dogs not to bark and react so loudly and behave like Dakota was, how do I go about training a puppy to react that way in those situations or how did you do it?
TJ Cole dakota is naturally really calm and quiet. She rarely barks. But a lot of training in distracting areas. The best thing I did was meetup with other teams that were more advanced in training. Dakota saw how those dogs behaved and learned the ropes. Trained to ignore them (focus command while around other calm dogs) then when around harder distractions. Just go easy and slow so you don’t stress your pup out. You want to set him up for success not failure.

I just wanted to thank you SO MUCH. As we are owner training a half husky half german shepherd ourselves, it gives us hope that we will be successful when we see your VLOG. Everyone has so much negativity towards training a husky as a service dog! Huskies do not deserve this poor reputation. While we agree that a husky certainly isn't a first choice as a breed for service work, they should not be dismissed either. Louie has a youtube vlog and his instagram is louietheservicedawgg ! I’m currently training my own service dog for ptsd and anxiety and stuff like that she’s 7 months now and she’s doing really well but she’s far from being fully trained. It’s a lot of work and time on your part so if your doing it be ready. Also there’s a lot of books about training your own service animal which are good and there’s a lot of websites as well.
life with mental illnesses Tanisha Clarke Hi Tanisha! I really suggest talking to your doctor and/or therapist before taking a service dog on. Having a full trained service dog can still be hard and having on in training is 2x as hard. If you have PTSD I would really wait and make sure this is an appropriate option, having a dog with you 24/7 you’ll receive positive and negative attention. I know sometimes it spikes my attacks when I hear someone saying it’s embarrassing when my dog has an accident (which it does happen especially when your training them) It’s a lot to take on. For training wise I don’t suggest claiming the dog as fully trained until after 2 1/2 years. This is when they mature and start to really work harder and take it seriously. I have a Bernese Mountain Dog who is very smart, I was able to teach him alert cues/ commands within 1 week. We didn’t do medical alert or response training til he was 4 1/2 months starting with only scratch responses and moving on to crying, coughing and twitching. I also recommend starting the dog at 8 weeks, getting and older dog can be great but it’s more work since so much of the educational brain sponge period is over. Start immediately with sit, and focus. Wait until the dog does it at least 90% of the time without distraction and 80% with a distraction (distractions can be other dogs, food on the floor, kids or adults, dropping loud objects) Than you can move on to down and stay. I prefer to teach stay and come before they are 7-8 months. When teaching down all teach Stand, let the dog know when to stand up and be ready. These are your 6 core commands for everything. Once your dog has all 6 down you can start Public access in non- pet friendly places (I still ask permission as training in a store can be very eye catching and distractions will come in masses. Also use holidays to your advantage. It’s Halloween now so many handlers including myself will go to all the Halloween shops to let our dogs do commands in front of the dog machines and pop out mechanics. It’s really a great way to train, during Christmas I’ll wave bells around the dog and have them meet Santa’s (again with permission) this allows the dog to get used to noise and large unfamiliar men in costumes. Breeds I suggest would be Labs, Golden’s, Bernese Mountain dogs, aussies( just know they are a lot of work because they are so high energy) I don’t suggest starting with Pitbulls (nothing against the breed but you may have a lot of access issues) , doodles (many have complained that dog is not self aware and fights with themselves because of identity) can be aggressive! I also don’t suggest Great Danes, though big and great for mobility they have a very short life span and you’ll only get 1-2 years out of them fully trained before retiring them. Just remember to talk to your doctors about your options and look into everything from breeds to training cost before making a decision. Goodluck! Lots of love!

Nymeria The Malinois Amazon has a few good quality vests they are not the prettiest tho so I recommend you stick with Etsy and eBay
