Here in 2024 and you're the only person I found that did it the correct way. Going to change my shocks soon as so many videos are trying to hold the hex with plyers or hold the inside strut bar. Than you for this!!! 🙏
I’ve been trying to figure out how to get the clunking to stop on my coils. And I saw videos of tightening this nut, but I went to tighten mine, and noticed the entire bolt turning so I stopped after only about a 1/4 turn or less(hope I didn’t break anything) gonna go try this right way now and hope it fixes my noise. Any chance you know how to take off the damper adjustment knob? So I don’t have to completely remove my rear coilovers? Can’t get a 17mm socket over the adjustment knob 😢
I wrapped my vice grips with grip tape to hold the piston in place. Same thing happens with end links and ball joints. Good thing you have the right sockets.
this video just about stopped me from ruining my coilovers. I searched all over, and this is the only one with the same top nut arrangement (I have STs, the cheaper version of your KWs). I believe after watching this I have realised how my original suspension got shot, by using a torque driver on the top nut and excessively spinning the shaft inside the shock. Those ones you stick an allen key in the middle while you undo the top nut. I was about to attempt to remove the 9mm on the top, believing that was the top nut, as we have the adjustment allen in the middle, All in all thank you.
I wish I had seen this months ago replacing stock shocks on a 96 Fleetwood. Would have saved me a lot of headache. Especially because the attachment points are not as easy to access as the ones in your video. I have been putting off replacing the control arms because it requires me to take the shocks off again but this method has me feeling more confident about tackling that project.
Dude this video is a life saver. I’ve been feeling like my coilover was blown. Always super clunky and then when I open the hood the nut on the high hat is loose, every time I try to tighten it the whole cylinder spins. I thought it had to do with my dampening adjustment being stripped. But I now think this will fix my issue, gotta buy that open ended set. Many props to you bro.
Dude THANK YOU! This has been pissing my off so bad for over a month and I had 3 shops say the same thing. Good thing I didn’t try the air power cuz I had a feeling it wouldn’t work right. THANK YOU SO MUCH
It’s also referred to as a pass through ratchet. You can get the same effect with a Allen key, a socket for the nut, and a pair of vise grip to grab the socket lol. That’s only in severe situations though. Just buy a pass through lol
Or an offset box wrench. Still don't understand why they don't make hex shaped exteriors on sockets. Then every socket would be a pass through. Plus you could use those crow foot adapters on your torque wrench and tighten to spec. None of this guessing.
Great job on explaining how to remove top shock bolt.. Thanks . But...Now we learned in a live video not to buy cheap tools. 😅. Great job on both lessons. 😊
The last time I took a strut mount center nut off without compressing it, it blew apart my strut mount. Tht was my 1st and last time making that mistake
Thanks for showing the correct tool. I was scratching my head figuring what I need to do. I was going to do vice grips, but that just didn't seem right.
Cheapo method I've used involved an open offset wrench and a flex head ratcheting wrench with an Allen socket to hold the shaft steady. Kind of works.. but not ideal.
Thanks for this post. It makes me feel better about that choice over several other brands. Im on the east coast and the roads can be hell on a suspension!
It's amazing how much rattling noise will come from the rear strut on a Toyota when that top nut is even slightly loose. I really thought that it was a worse problem.
HF always has the right tools for BMW's and lifetime warranty makes it way sweeter! This open end wrench is amazing for working on Mazda serpentine belts (easy to lose the belt tension in that tight space) and removing and installing BMW strut shocks as this tool is require to remove the top bolts and reverse. The long pass-through socket will aid in torquing the bolt to the correct specs using a Crowfoot wrench adapter connected to your torque wrench! Worth every penny and like always.... LIFETIME WARRANTY...
I have a 2002 Chevy blazer and the 9mm doesn’t fit on it. Back where I started. I can’t get it to stay still while I remove the nut. I’ve tried vise grips and everything
I don't understand why they don't make sockets with hex exteriors.. Then every socket would be a pass through for those times when you need it. Plus, you could use wrench adapters for torque wrenches and not guess in situations like these, where that torque range on the end nut means something.
I have the same problem, using Koni shocks on a 1990 Miata. They arn't coil overs, but they have an allen wrench hole in the top for 3 settings. But I think all I need is an allen socket, hoping it will fit in the wrench your using from Harbor Freight.
Damn I’m getting some clunking with my Vorshlag camber plates with brand new racecomp engineering Tarmac 2 (recalibrated KW v3 I think) on my 2019 WRX. Strap wrench only got me to like 26 ft lbs with a socket. Called Vorshlag and they still think the noise is because the top nut isn’t tight enough and recommended to pulse an impact gun on it with no pressure from springs
i did mine today with electric ratchet no problem. ive used that open wrench before with an allen key which sux,. what did you use to hole it down a 9mm socket? what is the socket holding if its supposed to be an allen key, will try this trick next time sweet
Don't know if this might help but it worked for me .my coil over was still on the car .I put the 19mm socket over the nut (just the socket not the handle ). wedged a screw driver in to stop socket from moving then just used the Allen key to tighten up .once it was as tight as I could get it with the Allen key removed screw driver and tightened with socket .it didn't spin.sorry for the laymen terms but I'm no mechanic lol.
Awesome video! I’m get me that open socket set up. How would I got about doing the opposite-tightening/ torquing that nut? Will I still be able to use the tools that you rec’d?
My problem is strange engineering wants me to torque the top nut to x foot pounds torque so with the torque wrench on I can't get to that piece stop the shaft. Wonder if they make a torque wrench thats a ratchet wrench
Agh I figured it out they make a socket it's like a half socket in the middle portion so u can get a socket or wrench on the shaft and torque the top nut
I had front struts replaced at a local shop. They appear to work good, but the fender well is sitting higher above the front tires than the back now. I see how to remove the nut now, but how do you adjust the suspension to match the back?
If they're specced the same as OEM, they may not be adjustable and just need time to settle. Also, if the rears are older, they may never truly catch up. Sometimes it's good to replace all 4 for this reason, and let them age together.
@@breaddrinker So it turns out that the rear springs were busted. Just had them replaced and now everything looks normal. Thanks for the advice anyway.
My offset 19mm close wrench does me just fine and costs much less. Then again my anomaly of a strut mount is presently being bored out because I can barely fit my fingers in the hole to hand tighten the damn thing lol. To anyone who reads this, if you want a good laugh, just check out what it takes to get access to that nut on a 2013+ ford C-max. Oh and if you can fit it in there crows foot works well and then you can torque it without some wonky setup

@@MotordyneG35 got them used about 2 years ago when it only had 6k miles on it but the right front needed rebuild from previous owner other than that it was amazing compared to stock struts.
Nah brah, easier way. One tool. Go get a rubber strap wrench (sometimes only a new one will work since its more sticky and the strap hasnt been warped into a U shape cross-wise by tension) wrap the strap tight around the shaft and grip it against the handle. There is a certain way it goes to where the more it twists the greater the grip strength gets, after at most one or two rotations of the top nut where its still just spinning the shaft it will grab and youll feel the top nut break loose - now youre cookin and the nut is being tightened to the top hat and spring perch via the washer (conical on subarus) this used to be my worst enemy but once i figured this out i can remove, disassemble and reassemble and reinstall all four struts in like 90 minutes by myself if i hurry
The KYBs I have are not like this.. They have just a notch on two sides, so all you can fit on is a 7mm open end- box wrench, which rounds off the small notches. Terrible design. should be a six point, like these, so that you can use a wrench or socket on it.
Same here, but a set of Moogs in '99 Jetta and only one notch! The stock ones I removed were no problem as the stem was allen. Still no way to tighten them!
