- Can you really buy or build a solar oven for $5? Yes, you can. My sister hit up the local dollar store and got everything she needed to build a $5 funnel solar oven. If you are on a budget or just want to try something new and fun make yourself a funnel solar oven and have some fun.

The reason for putting an object underneath the solar oven is to elevate the oven from the ground, because the ground, and any moisture in it, will suck out heat from the oven. Furthermore, having a hole in the center of the object propping up the oven acts as a trap for air, creating dead-air-space which is an excellent, cheap and lightweight insulator from the ground to your oven.
This is my favorite type of solar cooker.
The horizontal mode (like your video) is for when the sun is lower in the sky. The vertical position (which needs a bucket to support it) is for when the sun is more directly overhead.
I put mine in the back of my truck, on picnic tables, next to my blanket at the beach or anywhere I will be for 2-3 hours.
This should be on EVERYONE'S channel. This is one of the most important videos on UA-cam. I'm going to favorite it and mention it on my channel. Kudos to your sister. Well done!
This seems a lot smarter than building an elaborate parabolic reflector.
I REALLY like the fact this is made with COMMONLY and READILY available stuff. What's neat is the reflector DOUBLES as a car sun shade AND a funnel oven. Given the nominal cost and easy availability, there's no excuse not to have the reflector and a couple baking bags around for emergencies.
I bought all my stuff for my funnel oven today, Now I'm just waiting for a sunny day without to much wind, Thanks for the reminder about the bread.
We made a reply video to this. It turned out great but our sunny day got cloudy so we will have to see how good it cooks to tommorow. We were going to try chili. THanks so much for sharing this. My 8yr daughter actually made ours. She started a show on my channel called Homeschool Prepper Show. This was her Episode 1 video project.
to make it easier to keep aligned to the sun a large lazy susan is great for rotating
This is so simple and did not cost much either. Have a blessed day.
I have a gas oven and the house gets so hot when I try to bake in the oven. Will be trying this. Thanks (and I love how your sister allows you to poke the food in her kitchen; she is VERY nice)
This is so amzing. Thank you so much! I was going to pay 70 but I have that dollar store sunshade right in my apartment to experiment.
I'm trying this right now in sunny Spain. Thanks for the video.
Wow! The $5 solar oven is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing this. What a great benefit for many many people and a fun and practical project for many more.
Awesome video, thanks for making it! I look forward to trying my hand at cooking with solar
@ravenselene You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
I wonder if a black cast iron pot would work better, bc it's a heat sink, I.E., it holds heat and doesn't cool off fast like a regular roasting pan. I have a cast iron frying pan with a glass lid that might work good. You could put it in the sun for an hour, get it hot and decrease the chance of food borne illness. the bacteria would never have a chance to grow bc it'd be too hot. Plus I live in the desert si I could just throw a steak on the porch, Lolol.
Thanks for helping folks to prep.
great video I am going to Devil's River in the morning I have all this stuff to do this so my family and I are going to try this an experiment we are so excited!
@ravenselene I think both ways work. With the bag it cooks faster and locks in the moisture.
Luvin' that good ol' LDS Ingenuity! This $5 Funnel Solar Oven is AWESOME! 😃👍
LOVE frugal, smart stuff like this! Thanks SO MUCH for posting! Gonna try this immediately!!!!
Love the video! Good to come back after church to a delicious meal. Hope my wife shares these ideas at relief society
I'm sure you will have fun doing this together.
wow...I am super impressed!!! thank you for being so diligent in sharing your knowledge!
I will try it out, and for that cost it's worth it. thanks for sharing.
@RJBURG That is what I thought too. It is called a funnel oven because it is supposed to look like a funnel. I wonder if the bucket should be weighted down. It seems a little top heavy.
I am definitely trying this over the weekend. Too hot to bake in the southwest at this time of year indoors, but outdoors there is PLENTY of sun!
I don't know. My sister cooked them. Cooking time will vary depending on sunshine, how you have the stove positioned, etc.
Awesome recommendation. Thanks for commenting and sharing your videos. Feel free to post one as a video response.
As soon as these two hurricanes pass by I'm trying this. Thanks!
The prices they quoted were from Dollar Tree.....I shop there every day. If you don't have one in your town, you can go to their website & get it shipped free. Great Vid! Gotta run to town & gonna get my supplies to try this out!
Hey guys. I was figure if car shade was good for make may own solar oven so what a surprise that I found your video. I am from Cancun so we had a lot of intensive sun almost all the time. Thanks a lot.
Add a pair of large Pyrex bowls and a dark pot or paired dark metal baking pans inside the funnel cooker and you should get some impressive temperatures... I am in Washington State, and have pushed to high enough temps to burn my fingers.
I went to a survival fair for kicks and giggles.
A guy had a solar deal for 100 bucks...but it was fairly solid, easy to fold up, and you could adjust the angle.
I ended up getting some solar flashlights, water filtration contraptions, MRE's, heirloom seeds, and a mini cooking device called a dragon.
I was so tempted by the solar oven but I will try the car reflector deal!
Simple...yet effective. Thanks!
The cooling rack isn't to get sun on the bottom of the pan; it's to keep the sunshade from melting.
Omg, thank you Lord!!! I wanted a solar oven but the cost is ridiculous. I wanted to have a way to cook without electric if it went out or SHTF. I'm going out today to get supplies to make 3. God bless you for sharing, an answer to prayer 😊😊😊😊😊😊
I thought that too! Since I have found solar ovens I have wondered why survival shows haven't had them on.
@deadlyyellowrose That depends on what you are cooking, how much, the container, how much sunshine, etc.
Love the sun visor sun oven!
I never thought of using a windshield cover. I'll have to try this, thanks for posting?
im making this tomorrow! !! AWESOME
I was just thinking aluminum foil would work but this is much easier and cheaper than replacing foil. Maybe the hole in the bottom is for air flow for even cooking? Can't wait to try this!
@navvet81 Cool..LOL. I'm glad you liked it and favorited it.
@RJBURG Great comments. Thanks!
is'nt this fantastic any one can do this all you need is motivation cheers,I love it
really, i bought $1 windshield shades just last week at the dollar store. I also saw the 2/$1 cooling racks. I didn't go down the isle with the oven bags but it sounds reasonable to me. You should look for a new dollar store.
I am going to try this! Excellent!
If you cover them with a see-thru plastic oven bag/bag, you can see the cakes rise and determine when they are ready. On an overcast day they will take longer to cook. (Some sunlight can penetrate thru certain clouds.)
This is awesome. I am going to try this one this weekend. I will do a reply video. Thanks for sharing.
@CravattEnterprises Awesome! Let us know how it goes and what you learn.
Thats a great idea. I subbed!
Explain, exactly how I would bake bread using one of these..like does the bread have to have a lid or a baking bag over it please. And ty
Where did you get the ovens you made the chicken in or did you make those? Do you have instructions on how to make them?
AWSOME I am all about cheap!! free is better !!!! Good Job! thanks
very creative....
I've tried this in the past using mylar reflective sheets found at an art or hardware store and plain cardboard :-)
looks great! Such a great idea, I'm really looking forward to trying this.
Jump to 2:40 to get to the part about the actual oven.
put some black tiles on the rack for more heat or a piece sheet steel 1/8 thick or so also the the front screen should up a little to shine on the pot plus blow air in the bag like a balloon then seal. i made lots solar ovens not a funnel one yet but soon see mine at [ rjburg ]
Thanks for all the good info and I will take a look at your videos
i just dont know what i am going to find next on you tube a new way to cook and and bar q for free and best of all no hot stove to cook over for hours grate job and good food from solar power i am going over the dollar store now and do some cooking.thanks guys
Fantastic idea and affordable too, Thanks for sharing.
So cool for the summer activities
Ill give this a try.
I've heard of a nuclear family, but you guys must be the Solar family! All looks so good. 350 degrees! That is amazing.
Hi, I am planning to make a solar oven and gluing aluminum foil to the sides of a box....do you know if the glue gets too hot from the cooking if it will cause toxic gas to contaminate the food? is there a certain type of glue i should use?
@EBKauai Thank you so much for your comment. Please everyone take a look at EBKauai's channel for more info on these solar ovens/cookers.
@TheRamblingRose Thank you. Great advice.
@katzcradul Thank you. This has been a very popular video. Please share the knowledge. Prepping doesn't have to be expensive.
I picked up the window sun blocker, a cooling rack, and oven bags from dollar tree this morning. The screen they sell now is too flimsy to stand on its own... we'll see how this goes...
Keith G. Saturn please update how it went if you are able
just like back in the boy scouts, but y'all are camping in kitchen that great and god bless u
p. s. the idea of the bucket is so when you push it in makes the front end come up to shine on the pot
I'm going to make one of these just because it's so simple to make and try out.
I'll have to wait till summer though not a lot of sun in Australia at the moment :(
ok you have sold me on the SOS ovens LOL Added to the buy list :)
I have a Question: What would be the effect if I use microwavable Ziplock bag instead of Oven bag? Would it do a better job at retaining the heat?
Anyways thank you for your video!
Good question! I’d love to know the answer, too.
How did it go?
I sure am.
Thanks for a most informative video.... Cooking using the sun is really a plus for saving the environment. Could you please post links where one could find "Black Pots" as referenced in the video. I am not in the USA.
Winston
Everything looks great! What happens when it rains while your food is outside in the solar oven?
When you shop at the dollar tree everything is a dollar. I have seen all these things at this price. Sometimes it depends on where you are and if the dollar store you go to is just that in name only. Dollar Tree is great ! And it is for real !
Can you use solar boxes inside..say a south facing window..lots of hot sun...i dont see why not..if its to cold outside to do this..just set it inside with the highest sunny window
Saw a video that a guy used a modification to a Cook-It cooker (African refugee camp cooker) to get it to cook stew in the snow. I have applied a version of that modification to a funnel cooker. And plan to adjust it come Winter, if you can get enough light the outdoor temps can be adjusted for.
@MrsNewAmericaNow Let us know how it goes. It should be fun and interesting.
@HandsomeSasquatch I don't know.
Keep it all covered up, bring it inside and set in a warm place till done.
@luvintherawlife Both ways work. Find what works best for the dish you are preparing. Glad to hear you eat raw. That is the best.
Do you have a video about how to bake brea in these?
Here’s how to make a simple solar oven:
Get a pizza box
Cut a flap on the top out
Cover the flap with aluminum foil
The hole that you cut the flap out cover it with plastic wrap
Put more aluminum foil on the bottom of the box
Put black construction paper on top of it
Put a black plate and then put whatever you want to cook on the black plate
And wa la
Nice 👍 easy thanks 😅
>>>That is one hell of a great idea! 99 cents store, here we come!!
With the funnel cooker, do you need a roasting bag if your pot has a lid?
I wonder what would happen if you put that around a Lodge Dutch oven with the lid on?
Please send a link to How to Cook Without Solar, Wood or Gas.
Thanks!!
How do you support the oven with a bucket and still have food inside of it at a fully vertical position? Is that what the rack is for?
I will try this awesome
How long it take to cook a whole chicken? And How do you know when it is done?
i did not see your solar cooker on your channel GUY BROWN, did you move it to different oage...
That does look awesome
@mogges1 Interesting idea. Give it a try.
Good video. Thanks.
What's best name brand bags to bake chocolate chip cookies on the go.I can put like a small pan in the bag with aluminum foil, maybe I can leave it in my car to expand the heat ???? And what else could I put in the bag to make the inside of the bag hotter ?????
How about the food in the pots? Were the pots cooked in a different solar oven?
where did you get the solar ovens that you made the chicken in?
Yes.
that's pretty awesome!
Great question. We believe that our church is the restored original church that Christ founded when he was alive. That is why it is called the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. It isn't the Mormon church it is The Church of Jesus Christ. Mormon is a nickname. For more information you can got to mormon DOT org.
