    Thank you for the great review. Does the plastic make the sound 'darker' (less upper harmonics); such as a Sousaphone?

    This Cool Wind tuba appears to be identical to my Rhinesound Music "Tiger Tuba". You mentioned that you 'thought' the valves have aluminum rotors in brass casings, which is what the Tiger Tuba has. The problem with the Tigers is that brass and aluminum react with each other, forming something that makes the valves sluggish. Taking them apart and doing a cleaning / re-lube gets them back to operational, but it is a hassle. I had hoped by now that they had redesigned the valves....but maybe not.....

      I’m certain the two are identical. But I don’t know that the Tiger brand is made any more. Loved the Tiger logo. I have also noticed that with extensive use, a sharp, raised lip is starting to appear on the valves too. I’m still studying these plastic horns. So far, I really like this one. I will probably do some more videos in the future as I discover more about it.

      @@EcclesiasticusRex , I do a lot of work related to restoration of Civil War brass instruments, and there are a few guys who make custom valve rotors. I am thinking of asking one of them to make replacement brass rotors for my Tiger, as this would cure the aluminum/brass reaction that progressively slows the valve action.

      It's called galvanic corrosion and occurs when you have dissimilar metals in close enough proximity to be electrically connected. Using a corrosion inhibitor would help, but is a short-term solution. Getting one of the parts made out of stainless, or like material, would solve the issue long term. The factory knows this, but they are choosing the cheaper method.

    You make it sound pretty good! I wonder if the large bore diameter has anything to do with it being more work to play, maybe pitch is more flexible or something.
    Art Hovey improved the ergonomics with an extension tab bolted to the first valve paddle, looks easy to do. Pictures on his Galvanized Jazz site.

      I think it's easier to play in tune, believe it or not. I can lip-bend pitches much easier and for greater distances. From the looks of it, and from talking to people in the industry, it seems to be based on the Miraphone 191 BBb.

    I recently bought a cool wind tuba but not sure what is safe to clean the body and rotary valve keys. What do you use or recommend?

    • @EcclesiasticusRex
      @EcclesiasticusRex  Рік тому +1

      Great to hear from you. Generally, for the body, a mild dish soap and room-temperature water. Don't use rubbing alcohol or windex because those will damage the plastic as far as I understand. When I take the valves out, I just wash them in mild soap and water and then rub them dry with a paper towel. After that, coat them with valve oil and put them back in. I don't think that the valve levers ever really need to be cleaned. I will put valve or key oil on the springs and connecting part of the valve lever arms. Bets wishes. I really enjoy playing it.

    Can you help me choose? This one or a Thomann Student pro tuba? It is for a marching band

      Although the Cool Wind tuba is easy to carry around, I don't think it would do well in a full marching band season. Too many things can get damaged.

    I just purchased one of these as an emergency backup to my Jupiter. As this is the first time I’ve owned a rotary valve tuba (though not the first time I’ve played one), I think it would be good to know its disassembly. I’m fairly handy, but would like to double check on something like this. Is it identical to the disassembly procedure I’ve seen for standard brass rotary valves?

      Great to hear from you. It is easier, I think, than disassembling brass rotary valves. There is a terrific review of these on youtube from one of the first customers to buy one in the US some years ago. At about 22 minutes in, he pulls the valves to show how easy it is. Harder to play instrument makes you better at playing, it's like doing calisthenics with a weight vest😂
